A recently developed numerical technique for improving the accuracy of the magnetic-field integral equation and the combined-field integral equation with low-order discretizations using the Rao-Wilton-Glisson functions is demonstrated on iterative solutions of large-scale complex problems, in order to prove the effectiveness of the proposed strategy as an alternative way for accurate and efficient analysis of multifrequency applications.

The Method of Weighted Residuals: A General Approach to Deriving Time- and Frequency-Domain Numerical Methods

The Method of the Weighted Residuals (MWR), sometimes known as the Method of Moments (MoM), has traditionally been applied in the frequency domain and has been shown to be effective and efficient, especially in computing open electromagnetic structure problems. Although it has been extended to the time domain in various forms, it is generally employed to solve integral formulations derived from Maxwell's equations. Therefore, it is often considered to be one type of numerical method that is different from other numerical methods, such as finite-difference methods. However, in this paper we will show that the MWR, or MoM, is not just a method per se: it can in fact be a general framework for or approach to unifying or deriving most of the numerical methods developed so far, either in the frequency domain or in the time domain. As a result, all numerical methods can be quite easily understood and can be categorized in one general method, although their conventional derivations may still have their respective advantages. One potential application is that the hybridization of different numerical methods can now be done within a uniform framework. The paper is intended for both beginners and experienced practitioners in the area of numerical electromagnetic modeling.

Quadrilateral Barycentric Basis functions for Surface Integral Equations

A framework for solving surface integral equation on quadrilateral, triangular, and mixed quadrilateral-triangular meshes is presented. The initial meshes are represented in terms of quadrilateral barycentric meshes (QBMs), which are obtained by partitioning each initial quadrilateral and triangle into four and three barycentric quadrilaterals, respectively. Quadrilateral barycentric basis functions (QBBFs) are defined on QBMs. The QBBFs serve a dual role. First, they allow defining primary basis functions (PBFs), which are well suited for representing surface currents on quadrilateral, triangular, and mixed meshes. Second, the QBBFs are used to define dual basis function (DBFs), which are natural for using in conjunction with Calderon multiplicative preconditioners (CMPs). These QBBFs, PBFs, and DBFs result in a substantial reduction in the number of nonzero elements in the sparse projection matrices for PBFs and DBFs as well as reduction of unknowns and quadrature points. When these PBFs and DBFs are used in CMPs, they reduce the number of iterations and eliminate the dense mesh breakdown of the surface electric field integral equation. Numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency of using the introduced QBBFs with associated PBFs and DBFs for solving electromagnetic surface electric field integral equations on quadrilateral, triangular, and mixed meshes.

Novel Reduced Matrix Equation Constructing Method Accelerates Iterative Solution of Characteristic Basis Function Method

In this paper, a new construction method of reduced matrix equation is proposed to improve the iterative solution efficiency of characteristic basis function method (CBFM). Firstly, the singular value decomposition (SVD) technique is applied to compress the incident excitations and these new excitations retained on each block after SVD are defined as the excitation basis functions (EBFs). Then, the characteristic basis functions (CBFs) of each block are solved from these EBFs. Lastly, these EBFs and CBFs are used as the testing functions and the basis functions to construct the reduction matrix equation, respectively. The diagonal sub-matrices of the reduced matrix constructed by the proposed method are all identity matrices. Thus, the condition of the reduced matrix is improved resulting in a smaller number of iterations required for the solution of the reduced matrix equation. The numerical results validate the accuracy of the proposed method. Compared with the traditional CBFM, the iterative solution efficiency of the reduced matrix equation constructed by the proposed method is significantly improved.

REDUCING MOMENT METHOD STORAGE FROM ORDER-N2 TO ORDER-N

Previously, integral equation-based calculations of electromagnetic scattering and radiation (e.g. moment method calculations) have required a full N*N matrix when there are N unknowns. However, novel basis and testing functions are presented, for which the resulting matrix is approximately sparse. That is, nearly all of its elements are nearly zero. This kind of technique is expected to reduce typical storage and execution time requirements by orders of magnitude.

An overconstrained version of the moment method is presented that is based on a redundant number of testing functions and the use of a pseudoinversion transformation to solve the related overdetermined system of equations. Preliminary results prove that numerical solutions to electromagnetic scattering problems involved in SAR calculation can also be reached by using limited computer resources.

An efficient technique for the solution of large-scale electromagnetic radiation and scattering problems arising from the surface integral equations and the method of moments is developed. The conventional MoM basis and testing functions are used to discretize the integral equations resulting in a dense impedance matrix. A block-partitioned wavelet transform is then employed to sparsify the matrix. Full advantage is taken of the sparse nature of the mathematical model to solve the system of equations by means of the recently introduced Stabilized Bi-Conjugate Gradient method (Bi-CGSTAB ( l)). Various problems are considered involving perfect electric conductor and dielectric material. Results are compared to the corresponding results obtained via the direct solution, or LU decomposition, of the original MoM dense matrix. Excellent results are obtained in a very efficient manner. By block partitioning the MoM impedance matrix as it is built and performing the wavelet transform on the matrix blocks, analysis of very large electromagnetic problems becomes possible in a very efficient and accurate manner.

Conformal Galerkin testing for VIE using parametric geometry

A moment method solution of a volume integral equation (VIE) using parametric geometry is presented. Typical Galerkin testing is shown not to be appropriate for curvilinear geometries, and a new testing scheme is proposed. By exploiting the orthogonality relationships between covariant and contravariant unitary vectors, testing functions in contravariant projection form and field expansion basis in covariant projection form were chosen.

The paper deals with the developed simulation optimizer used for testing different optimization methods on discrete simulation models and testing functions. Various modified heuristic (metaheuristic) optimization methods - Random Search, Downhill Simplex, Hill Climbing, Tabu Search, Local Search, Simulated Annealing, Evolution Strategy;Differential Evolution and Self Organizing Migrating Algorithm - are implemented in the proposed simulation optimizer. The simulation optimizer can also be remotely controlled by an application using client - server architecture. The architecture Client - Server was chosen to accelerate the testing of a large number of different settings of the implemented heuristic optimization methods. Furthermore, we developed an application that automatically evaluates the success of finding the optimum by the optimization methods and other evaluation criteria.
