3D-HEVC (The 3D Extension of High Efficiency Video coding), the latest international standard for 3D video coding, supports multiview plus depth 3D video format to enrich multimedia applications. For the texture coding, 3D-HEVC utilizes not only the information of temporal and spatial domains but also that of inter-view domain. However, the time consumption and complexity of 3D-HEVC also increase significantly. In this paper, fast texture coding algorithm for 3D-HEVC is proposed. We individually calculate the Pearson correlation coefficients by the rate-distortion costs (RD-costs) of coding tree units (CTUs) in the temporal, spatial and inter-view domains to analyze the correlations for independent view and dependent view. The proposed coding algorithm is based on the coding information of CTUs with higher correlations. The fast algorithm predicts and dynamically adjusts the depth range of the coding unit (CU). The prediction unit (PU) mode decision is proposed according to the complexity and partition direction of the best PU modes obtained from the highly correlated CTUs. The search range is adaptively adjusted for motion estimation. In addition, the RD-cost threshold is estimated to early terminate the CU split. Experimental results show that the proposed fast texture coding algorithm reduces the texture coding time significantly and outperforms numerous previous works.

Transform coding of arbitrary shape object is one of the core technologies of MPEG-4 video coding. In this chapter, we propose a shape adaptive Wavelet-Based Contourlet Transform framework for MPEG4 texture coding. In the shape adaptive texture coding framework, Wavelet-Based Contourlet Transform is divided into two parts: the Wavelet-Based Contourlet Transform of the shape mask, and the Wavelet-Based Contourlet Transform of the object texture. In the Wavelet-Based Contourlet Transform phase, the shape coding is carried out using lazy Wavelet-Based Contourlet Transform, and the texture coding is carried out by 9/7 wavelets in the form of lifting. In the zerotree quantization stage of wavelet coefficients, three quantization methods are adopted according to different needs. The experimental results show that the Wavelet-Based Contourlet Transform texture coding based on object has similar low complexity with the texture coding, such as SADCT, and the performance is better. Moreover, the coding effect is better than that of SADCT at low bit rate.

Early merge mode decision for texture coding in 3D-HEVC

As the upcoming 3D video coding standard, high efficiency video coding (HEVC) based 3D video coding (3D-HEVC) has been drafted. In 3D-HEVC, the computational complexity of mode decision process is significantly high due to exhaustive modes' checks for coding units (CU) derived from recursive quad-tree partitioning. In this paper, we propose an early merge mode decision method for complexity reduction of dependent texture views. First, inter-view correlation and hierarchical depth correlation of coding modes are separately analyzed for B frame and P frame. Then, conditions to early determine merge mode coded CUs are derived based on the correlations. All of the early determined CUs only check merge modes in the mode decision process, which brings considerable complexity reduction. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve average 20.4% of encoding time saving for dependent texture views with negligible rate distortion performance loss. textures are one of the main characteristics of the visual scene. Perceptually, their details are less important than their semantic meaning. This property has been exploited in many texture coding (content based video coding) approaches by removing parts of the textures in the encoder and synthesizing them at the decoder side. Such an approach would necessarily need modification of the coding process and violating the standard. This paper introduces a novel algorithm for texture coding called Local texture Synthesis (LTS), in which texture synthesis is employed in a full compatibility with HEVC standard. This implies that a basic HEVC decoder can be used to reconstruct the signal. LTS defines the necessary conditions to synthesize a patch and produces different synthesis of it. It tries then coding each of them, and finally chooses the one that minimizes the coding cost. A prototype of this algorithm, based on Markov Random Fields, is given in this paper. This prototype provides up to 10% bitrate saving (using the same quantization parameter) while maintaining an equivalent visual quality.

Matched-texture coding is a novel image coder that utilizes the self-similarity of natural images that include textures, in order to achieve structurally lossless compression. The key to a high compression ratio is replacing large image blocks with previously encoded blocks with similar structure. Adjusting the lighting of the replaced block is critical for eliminating illumination artifacts and increasing the number of matches. We propose a new adaptive lighting correction method that is based on the Poisson equation with incomplete boundary conditions. In order to fully exploit the benefits of the adaptive Poisson lighting correction, we also propose modifications of the side-matching (SM) algorithm and structural texture similarity metric. We show that the resulting matched-texture algorithm achieves better coding performance.

this paper presents a HEVC based multi-view video codec. The frames of the multi-view videos are interleaved to generate a monoscopic video sequence. The interleaving is conducted in a way to increase the exploitation of the temporal and inter-views correlations. The MV-HEVC standard codec is configured to work as a single layered codec, which functions as a monoscipic HEVC codec with AVC capabilities, and used to encode interleaved multi-view video frames. The performance of the codec is compared with the anchor standard MV-HEVC codec by coding the three standard multi-view video sequences: "Balloon", "Kendo" and "Newspaper1". Experimental results show the proposed codec out performs the anchor standard MV-HEVC codec in terms of bitrate and PSNR.

The whisker somatosensory system in awake, behaving rodents is a powerful model for studying neurobiology of sensation, from molecules to circuits to behavior. Recent studies reveal how key tactile features are detected in awake animals and encoded by spike trains in somatosensory cortex (Si). Here we summarize progress on detection of surface texture (roughness). texture appears to be inferred from the statistics of complex, irregular whisker micromotion on surfaces, specifically by mean speed or by patterns of discrete, high-velocity whisker slips. These are encoded in Si by mean firing rate and by sparse, synchronous, slip-evoked spike volleys, respectively. An alternative model of place coding for texture based on differential whisker resonance is less well supported, but is not ruled out.

Recently, palmvein recognition has been attracting much research interest. The joint use of palmprint and palmvein features can effectively increase the accuracy, robustness of palm based biometric techniques. And, as it is an inner vessel structure feature, palmveins can increase the anti-spoof and liveness detection capability of a palm based biometric system. However, lack of techniques to separate palmveins from palmprints in one image weakens the anti-spoof and liveness detection capability. This paper presents a novel online personal verification system by fusing palmprint and palmvein information. The proposed system includes: (1) A single camera and single light source to simplify the imaging system and save data collection time;(2) A morphological palmprint erasing technique to increase the accuracy of palmvein segmentation;(3) The fusion of palmprint and palmvein information to further improve the system accuracy. The experimental results demonstrated that since palmprints and palmveins contain complementary information, much higher accuracy could be achieved by fusing them than using only one of them. In addition, the whole verification procedure can be completed within 1 s, which implies that the system can work in real time. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

3D-HEVC is the newest standard for compressing the Multi-View plus Depth (MVD) video. Inheriting from HEVC, 3D-HEVC presents a high encoding complexity by extra considering interview prediction. Under the encoding architecture of 3D-HEVC, we develop fast algorithms for early decisions of CU splitting/non-splitting for both texture and depth frame coding. High correlation between the texture and depth domains is exploited such that when encoding one domain of information (texture or depth), the coding efficiency (RD characteristics or speedup) can be improved by adding suitably augmenting information from the other domain, thus achieving the so-called depth-assisted and texture-assisted coding. In texture coding part, optical flow features and depth edges are combined to form a feature vector for searching similar CUs in previously coded block buffers and inheriting the CU splitting decision accordingly. In depth coding part, optical flows and depth map features are used as inputs to a neural classifier for fast decision of CU splitting/non-splitting. Compared to the original 3D-HEVC implementation, our texture coding algorithm achieves a 46.6% of time saving at only 0.4% of bit rate increase and 0.04 dB of quality degradation. On the other side, our depth coding algorithm saves 35.8% of the encoding time at 2.65% of bit rate reduction and 0.16 dB of PSNR degradation. In comparison to prior works [4][5][10], our algorithm achieves more time saving at comparable bit rate increase and PSNR degradation.

Development of stereo video codecs in latest multi-view extension of HEVC (MV-HEVC) with higher compression efficiency has been an active area of research. In this paper, a frame interleaved stereo video coding scheme based on MVHEVC standard codec is proposed. The proposed codec applies a reduced layer approach to encode the frame interleaved stereo sequences. A frame interleaving algorithm is developed to reorder the stereo video frames into a monocular video, such that the proposed codec can gain advantage from inter-views and temporal correlations to improve its coding performance. To evaluate the performance of the proposed codec; three standard multi-view test video sequences, named “Poznan_Street”, “Kendo” and “Newspaper1”, were selected and coded using the proposed codec and the standard MV-HEVC codec at different QPs and bitrates. Experimental results show that the proposed codec gives a significantly higher coding performance to that of the standard MV-HEVC codec at all bitrates.
