In this thesis we study several computer implementa- tions of the thinning algorithm, a new method for generating non-homogeneous Poisson processes. The method, developed by Professor P. A. W. Lewis, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, and G. S. Shedler, IBM Research Laboratory, San Jose,, California, is valid for Poisson processes with any given intensity function. The basic thinning algorithm is modified to exploit several refine- ments which reduce computer execution time by approximately one-third. The basic and modified thinning programs are compared with a previous algorithm of Lewis and Shedler, the Poisson decomposition and gap-statistics algorithm, which is easily implemented for Poisson processes with 2 intensity tunctions of the form exp (a0+a1t+a2t2). The thinning programs are competitive in both execution time and computer memory requirements. One program implementa- tion generates the events in a Poisson process one at a time; another program implements the algorithmic refinements which improve efficiency.

DeCoNet: Density Clustering-Based Base Station Control for Energy-Efficient Cellular IoT Networks

Recently, there has been a rapid increase in the number of (small-cell) base stations (BSs) to support the massive amount of mobile data traffic and rapidly increasing number of mobile devices in beyond 5G (B5G) wireless communication systems or Internet of Things (IoT) networks. However, many of these BSs tend to waste a considerable amount of energy to support such data traffic and mobile devices. Therefore, the development of an efficient BS status control algorithm is important for realizing energy-efficient IoT networks. To reduce network energy consumption, we herein propose a density clustering-based BS control algorithm for energy-efficient IoT networks (DeCoNet). DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) and OPTICS (Ordering Points To Identify the Clustering Structure) are utilized for partitioning high and low user-density regions. To find the effective number of BSs and their appropriate locations considering user-density differences, we utilize parameters obtained after applying density clustering algorithms to derive the thinning radius that is used to adjust the status of BSs in overall cellular IoT networks. Specifically, the average reachability-distance of each cluster in OPTICS and the distance between the outermost border users of each cluster in DBSCAN are used to obtain the radius of each cluster region. Through extensive computer simulations, we show that the proposed algorithms outperform the conventional algorithms in terms of average area throughput, energy efficiency, energy per information bit, and power consumption per unit area.

Cardiovascular disease is a severe threat to human health. The assessment of the degree of cardiovascular stenosis is very important for the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. The segmentation of coronary angiographic images is the basis of analyzing the degree of stenosis. In this paper, a method that evaluates explicitly the degree of stenosis of blood vessels of interest is proposed. This method first extracts the vessels of interest by interactive segmentation, then thins it, and then calculates the diameter by edge intersection method. The average Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) value of the proposed segmentation method exceeds 92%, and the average Jaccard Similarity (JAC) value is over 86%. The area under the ROC curve value of the method is larger than the u-net method and the multiscale Hessian method. The results indicate that the interactive method can have good segmentation results and meet the general segmentation requirements. The qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the diameter measurement effect also shows that the effect of the corresponding diameter measurement method can reflect the change of the thickness of the blood vessel and basically meet the needs of clinical use.

Image feedback path tracking control using an uncalibrated CCD camera

Image feedback path tracking (IFPT) control of a laser light point (LLP) using a CCD camera is studied in this paper. The tracking path and the LLP are assumed clearly focused in the scene, but no camera calibration is needed. A modified version of the thinning algorithm SPTA is proposed to skeletonize the path in a piecewise manner. The proposed thinning algorithm takes less computer time than the original SPTA and makes the real-time skeletonization possible. Included in the paper is also the development of a control algorithm with image feedback to assure LLP tracking along the required path, as well as an experimental study to demonstrate how IFPT control can be realized in practice.

Stroke extraction based on ambiguous zone detection: a preprocessing step to recover dynamic information from handwritten Chinese characters

A method of stroke extraction based on ambiguous zone detection is presented to facilitate the recovery of dynamic information from static handwritten Chinese character images. First, ambiguous zones are detected using feature points of the skeleton and the contour information around them. Then, a graph is built to represent each character, and the continuity of sub-strokes is analyzed using Bayesian classification. Several constraint conditions are proposed to search stroke paths in the graph and two criteria are also utilized to deal with multi-traced sub-strokes. Finally, strokes are reconstructed by B-spline interpolation. Experimental results show that the proposed method can detect the ambiguous zones accurately, and is feasible and effective for stroke extraction.

An efficient method for digital imaging of ancient stone inscriptions

Ancient stone inscription is one of the most important primary sources to know about our ancient world such as age, art, politics, religion, medicine, etc. Image acquisition is the first stage for digitizing and preserving the stone inscriptions for further reference. The traditional method of wet paper squeezes is still being used, that will be digitized and preserved for recognition. In this communication, we propose a new image acquisition method called shadow photometric stereo method for upgrading the image for recognition. The efficiency of the proposed acquisition method has been proved in image thinning process. Improving the thinning quality of the characters facilitates better feature extraction for character recognition. An experiment has been performed on two stone inscriptions that were in different places, one inside laboratory and other in its original place, i.e. outside the laboratory. Analyses were performed in terms of performance measures such as hamming distance and peak signal-to-noise ratio. Comparisons with the best available results are given to illustrate the best possible technique that can be used as a powerful image acquisition method.

Twice-topology optimized heat sinks for enhanced heat transfer performance: Numerical and experimental investigation

Since the heat dissipation problem is always confusing and hindering the computing power improvement of electronic chip, an effective thermal management strategy is critical to relieve these problems. In this work, a new twice topology optimization design method combining topology optimization and image processing to design heat sinks is presented, which extends topology optimization from 2Dimention (2D) to 3Dimention(3D). Firstly, on the horizontal design domain, the conventional topology optimization is conducted for the minimization of average temperature/standard deviation. Then the optimal shape of liquid domain is converted into 1D flow routine by thinning algorithm. After that, another topology optimization is performed on the flow channel cross-section plane to get the best cross-section shape of channels. The liquid domain of the final heat sink is then obtained by scanning the optimized flow channel cross-section along the 1 Dimension (1D) flow routine and solving the interference by introducing cylinder joints. Finally, two kinds of twice topology optimized heat sinks including TTOHS-1 with minimized temperature variation as optimal goal and TTOHS-2 with minimized average temperature as optimal goal are generated by combining the liquid domain and a cuboid using Boolean Operation. The performance of heat sinks is numerically investigated, and the results indicate that the thermal performance of TTOHS-1 and TTOHS-2 are much better than that of the traditional heat sink with straight channels (TSCHS). When Re = 689, the average temperature and the maximum temperature of the heat source surface of TTOHS-1 are decreased by 4.99 % and 6.29 % respectively, compared to the TSCHS. The Nusselt number is increased by 46.16 % while the thermal resistance is reduced by 33.13 %. At last, the thermal and flow performance of the TTOHS-1 is studied by conducting experiments, showing that the numerical results agree well with that of the experiment.

Straightening of highly curved human chromosome for cytogenetic analysis

Analyzing the morphological characteristics of the human chromosomes is a general task of diagnosing many genetic disorders. For this purpose, 23 pairs of the chromosomes are placed on a table like format known as a karyotype. This is usually carried out manually by a skilled operator. Automation of this procedure is a difficult image processing task due to the non-rigid nature of the chromosomes making them to have unpredictable shapes and curvatures within the image. A novel Projective Straightening algorithm (PSA) for straightening and length detection in any given (straight, curved or highly curved) chromosome is proposed. This conventional method starts with filtering the spikes in chromosome images using median filter. Kettler algorithm is used to convert the image into binary image and Stentiford thinning Method (STM) provides the medial axis of chromosome image. Projective Straightening algorithm is used to straighten the medial axis, with straighten medial axis as reference and midline, binary image is straightened. A row matrix is created with respect to the straightened binary image. Chromosome image is projected over the row matrix which gives the straightened chromosome image. The parameters such as straighten angle, length and area of human chromosomes are calculated. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A Novel Dynamic Path Re-Planning algorithm With Heading Constraints for Human Following Robots

Paths will be re-planed timely according the change of obstacles and target position for Human Following Robots (HFRs) so that they can run safely and rapidly. Traditional path planning algorithms are generally focused on how to avoid obstacles or connect with the new target position effectively, however there are rarely studies on the elimination of robot heading fluctuation which is caused by path re-planning. Concerning this issue, we introduce a novel dynamic path re-planning algorithm AT & x002A;which is based on A & x002A;and walkable area thinning. When robots heading difference value between the current and the last moment which is derived from A & x002A;exceeds the threshold, AT & x002A;will search for path connection points by walkable area thinning, and then a new path going through optimal connection point and meeting heading constraints will be planned. thinning algorithm is improved in order to make the passable skeleton can connect path origin and the end. Results from simulation experiments show that AT & x002A;algorithm keeps heading stability as a priority at path re-planning and the robot motion stability can be improved effectively.
