This paper presents the first results of my PhD thesis, which addresses the problem dominant points detection for motion analysis on programmable retina. The goal of this research is to develop new algorithmical concepts to implement efficient image processing tools over the massively parallel cellular array of processors of the programmable retina, in order to perform effective motion analysis tasks.

In order to generate roads digital map of unknown area when the raster map is absent, we proposed a way which employs multi-track GPS (Global Position System) data. Despite inaccuracy of GPS system itself, multi-track data can reduce errors when we assume a symmetric distribution of the error values. Morphological operations to binary image are employed to process the GPS data. Dilation, closing operations are used to merge discrete data points and fill in gaps among GPS tracks, while thinning algorithm and pruning are used to extract skeleton to gets the roads' position. We also exploit direction rule and distance rule to delete redundant nodes when constructing roads graph so that the data storage of digital map will be reduced. By overlaying our own digital map on the Google Earth map of the same roads, this way of generating digital map with multi-track GPS data is proved to be effective.

Concerning automatic interpretation of interference fringes, current algorithms, such as typical hit-or-miss transform, always extract the characters by binary images, which are sure to lose some available information. Hence a new automatic interpretation algorithm of interference fringes is proposed, which uses their own gray characters and designs an appropriate weight function, then solves a series of curves to which the integrals of the square of the distance from each point of the fringes is minimal, that is to say, resolves expectations of fringes under the weight function designed. Furthermore the new algorithm has the functions of extracting the multiplicity of fringes as well as image processing. And the algorithm is insensitive to the random noise when the weight function is an odd function of gray.

Eye tracking is the method of tracking the user's eye gaze or where he is looking relative to his head. Its applications and studies were mostly done on general purpose computers. This study focuses on implementing an eye tracking system on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and specifically a text-typing application. Using state machines implemented in Verilog - a hardware description language and MATLAB for verification purposes, the said eye tracking system was built. State machines are very relevant in creating the logical circuits for the process algorithm of the system. Even in a low-end FPGA, the study comprising of several processes such as thinning algorithm and Hough Transform was accomplished. MATLAB has its significance to improve the checking of data gathered from every algorithm sequence in the system. Having no significant difference on the eye centers detected from the FPGA and MATLAB implementations, the study proved to be successful in terms of an FPGA implementation of the eye tracking system. From the resources obtained, the study can possibility gets a portable eye tracking device for the benefit of the disabled community.

A lane detection system is an important component of many intelligent transportation systems. In this paper, we present a robust and real-time lane tracking algorithm for any curved road. We use Non Uniform B-Spline (NUBS) interpolation method to construct the boundaries road lane. First, the Canny filter is employed to obtain edge map. Second, we apply parallel thinning algorithm into edge map to get the skeleton image. Once skeleton image is obtained, we introduce a new algorithm based on Vector Lane Concept to extract feature edge points that play the role as control points for NUBS interpolation process to represent left and right lane, separated. Finally, we estimate the curvature of left and right lane boundary for lane tracking. The result of this method can be used for Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGV) system application.

With the development of science and technology, mobile robots have more and more extensive applications to complete the task in unknown environment. Create the environmental map of the unknown space is a key to control and navigation of mobile robots. We focus on the related problems of topological map building in unknown environment. The main studies undertaken in this paper are listed as follows: firstly, the paper introduces the research background and points out the present problems of map building. Secondly, topological map is built based on thinning algorithm which is commonly used in image processing of recognition. This avoids producing un-necessary nodes and paths. The environment is modeled in grid map, next the thinning algorithm is applied in the map, and then the effective topological information is extracted. Finally, simulation results show that the topological map based on thinning is clear, simple and effective. Moreover this topological map reduces information storage memory. This will improve the ability of autonomous operation, navigation and path planning further.

thinning algorithm is widely used in image processing and pattern recognition. In this paper we proposed an optimized thinning algorithm based on Zhang-Suen thinning and applied it to video sequences of moving human body to extract real-time body skeleton. We firstly used background subtraction method to detect moving body, then made use of adaptive threshold segmentation to gain the binary moving body image, finally we used the optimized algorithm to the binary image and got its skeleton. The skeleton not only maintains the movement geometry and body image's topological properties, also reduces image redundancy and computation cost, and helps us clearly recognize the moving body posture.

Quantitative counting of fry is required for multiple reasons,including breeding,transportation,and sales and creating a fish-counting algorithm using image processing technology is proposed as a useful *** images for fish fry were preprocessed to extract the details of the target fish,using methods including binarization,dilation,and *** thinning and the connected area algorithms were then independently adopted to count the fish fry within the *** advantages and the disadvantages of the two algorithms under different densities were also compared,revealing that the fish fry pictures with a clear contrast between the foreground and background resulted in a higher *** main purpose of this research is to solve the problem of fry counting in the case of high density and high *** research provides a reference point for this method based on image technology.

thinning algorithms(or skeletonization) that extract feature parameters from an image are widely used in image processing. One of the most important issues in thinning is to reduce the execution time. Thus, many thinning algorithms have been proposed. But few attempts have been made to implement the thinning algorithms in real-time. The implementation of real-time skeletonization that has a large number of calculations is very difficult. This paper proposes hardware architecture that can output the thinned image to synchronize with the input image. The proposed architecture is implemented using the FPGA(Field Programable Gate Array) based vision system.

Recent advances in information technology have improved pathological virtual-slide technology and diagnostic support system studies of pathological images. Diagnostic support systems utilize quantitative indices determined by image processing. In previous studies on diagnostic support systems, carcinomatous areas of breast or lung have been recognized by the feature quantities of nuclear sizes, complexities, and internuclear distances based on graph theory, among other features. Improving recognition accuracy is important for the addition of new feature quantities. We focused on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and investigated new feature quantities of histological images of HCC. One of the most important histological features of HCC is the trabecular pattern. For diagnosing cancer, it is important to recognize the tumor cell trabeculae. We propose a new algorithm for calculating the number of cell layers in histological images of HCC in tissue sections stained by hematoxylin and eosin. For the calculation, we used a Delaunay diagram that was based on the median points of nuclei, deleted the sinusoid and fat droplet regions from the Delaunay diagram, and counted the Delaunay lines while applying a thinning algorithm. Moreover, we experimented with the calculation of the number of cell layers with our method for different histological grades of HCC. The number of cell layers discriminated tumor differentiations and Edmondson grades;therefore, our algorithm may serve as an index of HCC for diagnostic support systems.
