This article investigates distributed finite-time optimization problems for first-order multi-agent systems (MASs) with time-varying cost functions under arbitrary strongly connected digraphs. The objective is to seek the minimizer of the sum of cost functions within finite-time, where each cost function is only known by its corresponding agent. In order to realize the above optimization goal, by using finite-time stability theory and graphs theory, we propose a new class of distributed finite-time optimization algorithms which are independent of Hessian information and the partial derivatives of gradient with respect to time. Furthermore, as an application, the proposed distributed algorithms are extend to handle distributed finite-time economic dispatch problems of smart grids, where both the cost functions and loads are time-varying. Finally, simulation examples are illustrated to verify the theoretical results.

Distributed time-varying formation optimal tracking for uncertain Euler-Lagrange systems with time-varying cost functions

This article studies the distributed formation optimal tracking problems for Euler-Lagrange systems, where each agent only has access to local cost function and other relative state information with its neighbors. Different from existing works, the effects of time-varying formation, parametric uncertainties, external disturbances and optimal performance of Euler-Lagrange systems are all considered simulta-neously. Under the proposed distributed formation optimal tracking protocol, all agents are able to asymptotically track an optimal reference trajectory, while maintain the given time-varying formation. Firstly, a dynamic system is introduced for each agent to generate optimal reference signal, which uses only the individual's own state and the neighboring relative measurements with no extra exchange of virtual states needed. Then, an optimal tracking control strategy is proposed, with which zero optimum-tracking error can be achieved. Thirdly, sufficient conditions are given to guarantee that the agents' states asymptotically converge to the optimal solution in the desired formation under the proposed algorithm. Distributed Continuous-time Algorithms for Optimal Resource Allocation With time-varying Quadratic cost functions

In this article, we propose distributed continuous-time algorithms to solve the optimal resource allocation problem with certain time-varying quadratic cost functions for multiagent systems. The objective is to allocate a quantity of resources while optimizing the sum of all the local time-varying cost functions. Here, the optimal solutions are trajectories rather than some fixed points. We consider a large number of agents that are connected through a network, and our algorithms can be implemented using only local information. By making use of the prediction-correction method and the nonsmooth consensus idea, we first design two distributed algorithms to deal with the case when the time-varying cost functions have identical Hessians. We further propose an estimator-based algorithm which uses distributed average tracking theory to estimate certain global information. With the help of the estimated global information, the case of nonidentical constant Hessians is addressed. In each case, it is proved that the solutions of the proposed dynamical systems with certain initial conditions asymptotically converge to the optimal trajectories. We illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed distributed continuous-time optimal resource allocation algorithms through simulations.

In this paper, a time-varying distributed convex optimization problem is studied for continuous-time multi-agent systems. The objective is to minimize the sum of local time-varying cost functions, each of which is known to only an individual agent, through local interaction. Here, the optimal point is time varying and creates an optimal trajectory. Control algorithms are designed for the cases of single-integrator and double-integrator dynamics. In both cases, a centralized approach is first introduced to solve the optimization problem. Then, this problem is solved in a distributed manner and a discontinuous algorithm based on the signum function is proposed in each case. In the case of single-integrator (respectively, double-integrator) dynamics, each agent relies only on its own position and the relative positions (respectively, positions and velocities) between itself and its neighbors. A gain adaption scheme is introduced in both algorithms to eliminate certain global information requirement. To relax the restricted assumption imposed on feasible cost functions, an estimator based algorithm using the signum function is proposed, where each agent uses dynamic average tracking as a tool to estimate the centralized control input. As a tradeoff, the estimator-based algorithm necessitates communication between neighbors. Then, in the case of double-integrator dynamics, the proposed algorithms are further extended. Two continuous algorithms based on, respectively, a time-varying and a fixed boundary layer are proposed as continuous approximations of the signumfunction. To account for interagent collision for physical agents, a distributed convex optimization problem with swarm tracking behavior is introduced for both single-integrator and double-integrator dynamics. It is shown that the center of the agents tracks the optimal trajectory, the connectivity of the agents is maintained, and interagent collision is avoided.

Distributed Adaptive time-varying Optimization With Global Asymptotic Convergence

In this note, we study distributed time-varying optimization for a multiagent system. We first focus on a class of time-varying quadratic cost functions, and develop a new distributed algorithm that integrates an average estimator and an adaptive optimizer, with both bridged by a Dead Zone Algorithm. Based on a composite Lyapunov function and finite escape-time analysis, we prove the closed-loop global asymptotic convergence to the optimal solution under mild assumptions. Particularly, the introduction of the estimator relaxes the requirement for the Hessians of cost functions, and the integrated design eliminates the waiting time required in the relevant literature for estimating the global parameter during algorithm implementation. We then extend this result to a more general class of time-varying cost functions. Two examples are used to verify the proposed designs.

In this work, an affine formation maneuver control problem is studied for second-order multiagent system. The agents' task is to achieve affine formation maneuver through local interaction while minimizing the global time-varying cost functions. First, a distributed time-varying optimization problem with affine formation constraints is presented, where the solution trajectory is the affine transformation of the desired nominal configuration. Second, distributed time-varying optimization-based protocols are proposed. Using the proposed protocols, the agents' states asymptotically converge to the optimal solution, and thus the desired affine formation and the collective maneuvers issues can be solved. Third, the asymptotic convergence is proved using Lyapunov arguments. Finally, the effectiveness of the protocols is demonstrated by numerical simulation and experimental examples.

In this paper we consider the task of pose estimation for a rigid configuration of N moving points in R-3, based on camera image point data. Since the Euclidean motion parameters are uniquely determined, up to a scalar factor by the associated essential matrices, we focus on the estimation task for essential matrices. After a reformulation as a constrained optimization problem for a time-varying family of cost functions, a Newton-type path following method is applied to asymptotically track the minima of the cost functions.
