Thermal resilience in passive buildings: metrics, modeling methods, tool development, and evaluation of passive and mixed mode responses

Passive building techniques have been employed to create durable, comfortable and energy efficient buildings since the 1970's. These strategies have been focused on recently for the benefit of thermal resilience as the extreme weather events and electrical grid instability increase while policies encourage electrification. While comfort metrics and medical exposure science can inform metrics and limits, they have not been employed for their rigor to assess thermal resilience. This study synthesizes building performance simulation approaches for resilient buildings. It evaluates building performance, proposes new guidelines for building climate resilience, and compares results with limits identified in existing literature. These simulation approaches have been compiled into an accessible graphical user interface tool that can aid the masses in simulating building floats during an outage, utilized in a parametric analysis. This paper evaluates the effects of building envelope and passive cooling techniques in different climate zones to assess national scale impacts of thermal resilience.

Food waste has been become the major concern due to changing the lifestyle and urbanization which needs proper management. Thus, a basic computational investigation of anaerobic digestion is proposed to forecast the quantity of biogas generated from food waste owing to potential of food waste as an energy resource. Numerous models are available, though the majority depend on algebraic equations rather than biochemical equations and necessitate several input parameters alongside computational duration. This study predicts the biomethane potential of food waste having nine different categories. This research presents a streamlined model that forecasts the quantity of produced biogas from food waste energy viability investigations, such as sizing bioreactors that may help to process organic waste. The approach is applicable to alternative raw materials and can be replicated for comparable use cases, aiming to broaden the implementation of anaerobic digestion systems as an environmentally friendly energy resource. The estimation of biogas has been examined by employing theoretical equations and experimental techniques. Further, cumulative biogas yield was measured for all samples in which cooked vegetables provided higher energy production potential, whereas fruit pulp exhibits the lowest energy production potential followed by 426 ml/gmVS, and 207 ml/gmVS respectively. From biogas compositional analysis, the highest quality biomethane was observed in fruit pulp whereas the lowest quality methane was observed in vegetable waste which is 59% and 44% respectively. It can be analysed that this model will help to promote the food waste management and a platform for buyers and energy producers' industries.

Perceived cultural differences in healthcare for foreign patients visiting South Korea: tool development and measurement

Background: We developed a 41-item tool measuring cultural differences in healthcare as perceived by foreign patients visiting South Korea. Methods: The tool was tested on 256 foreign patients who visited three tertiary hospitals in Seoul, South Korea. Content validity was explored by two physicians and eight nurses working in an international healthcare department Structural validity was tested via exploratory factor analysis and by testing two hypotheses: (1) there are perceived cultural differences between the South Korean healthcare and those of foreign patients' home countries (one-sample t-test);and, (2) Perceived cultural differences vary among language groups (analysis of variance). We also calculated Cronbach's alpha. Results: The content validity index of the tool was 0.97. Exploratory factor analysis identified seven significant factors: hospital care and services, food, the healthcare system, communication, the healthcare facility, religion, and cultural values. The overall Cronbach's alpha for the tool was 0.96, indicating very high internal consistency. We found that foreign patients visiting South Korean hospitals perceived that the healthcare culture differed significantly from that of their home country. The perceived cultural differences varied significantly by language group. Conclusions: Nurses can use our new tool to understand the cultural differences of foreign patients and provide them with culturally competent nursing care.

Background Addressing barriers in the environment can contribute to health and quality of life for children with disabilities and their families. The Community Health Inclusion Index (CHII) is a measurement tool developed in the United States to identify environmental barriers and facilitators to community health inclusion. The CHII adopts an adult viewpoint and aspects crucial for children may have been omitted. Aims This study aimed to develop a comprehensive list of items that are relevant for the community inclusion of children with disabilities in the Canadian context. Methods The relevance and priority of items generated from a review of existing guidelines and best practice recommendations for community inclusion were rated as a dichotomous response and discussed by an expert panel in relevant fields related to children with disabilities. Results A total of 189 items from 12 instruments and best practice guidelines were identified. Expert consensus contributed to a relevant and comprehensive list of items. Expert suggestions were considered to refine and reduce the item list. Conclusion This study highlights the importance of a child version of a community inclusion tool, as the needs of children with disabilities differ from those of adults. It can help communities improve inclusion of children with disabilities and inform health promotion initiatives for this population.

Modulating downhole cuttings via a pulsed jet for efficient drilling-tool development and field testing

The method of pulsed-jet assisted rock-breaking using cuttings, which combines the advantages of a pulsed jet and an abrasive jet simultaneously, is an emerging drilling technology and can further improve the rate of penetration. Several key techniques of this method are discussed in this paper, including the structure and principle of the modulating tool, the modulation mechanism and the optimization method of the cuttings pulsed jet. An engineering prototype is developed based on the above research works and site conditions. Laboratory tests and field tests of the prototype are successively performed. The application effect is compared with actual drilling data of adjacent wells in the same formation and interval. The results are a good reference for the subsequent drilling. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Background and AimsPain assessment in noncommunicative intensive care unit (ICU) patients is challenging. For these patients, family caregivers (i.e., family members, friends) may be able to assist in pain assessment by identifying individualistic signs of pain due to their intimate patient knowledge. This study adapted the critical care pain observation tool (CPOT) to facilitate pain assessment in adult ICU patients by family caregivers. MethodsThis study was conducted through three distinct phases: CPOT adaptation for family caregiver use (to create the CPOT-Fam): A working group met monthly to adapt the CPOT and develop educational material and sample cases for practice scoring until consensus was ***-Fam preclinical testing: Family caregiver study participants viewed educational materials and scored four randomly selected sample cases using the CPOT-Fam. Scores were compared to reference scores to assess agreement and identify CPOT-Fam sections requiring revision. Open-ended feedback on the CPOT-Fam was ***-Fam revision: the CPOT-Fam was revised by the working group considering score agreement and feedback received from study participants.(1)(2)(3) ResultsOf the n = 30 participants, n = 14 (47.0%) had experience with an ICU patient. Agreement between CPOT-Fam participant scores and reference scores were highest for the vocalization dimension (Is the patient making any sounds?;Intraclass correlation coefficient;ICC = 1.0) and lowest for the body movements dimension (What are the patient's body movements like?;ICC = 0.85. Participants indicated they found the CPOT-Fam to be "informative" and "easy-to-use" but "not graphic enough";participants also indicated that descriptors like "lack of breath" and "struggling to move" are helpful with identifying individualistic behaviors of pain exhibited by their loved ones. Aim: We aimed to examine the validity and reliability of a newly developed tool that measures nursing and allied health students' knowledge of caring for patients with COVID-19. Method: We developed in five phases (literature review, item development, expert evaluation using content validity index, revisions based on a pilot test, and exploratory factor and reliability analyses on the data from the main study). We administered online surveys (the pilot test & the main study using a cross-sectional design) to students in a governmental health sciences college in Oman. Results: The pilot test had 43 participants, and the main study had 507. The item content validity index scores ranged from 0.81-1.00, and the scale content validity index for 20 items was 0.95. The factor analysis revealed a three-factor solution. The overall Cronbach's alpha for the final (19-item) version of the tool after item deletion was 0.76. The reliabilities for Subscales 1, 2, and 3 were 0.83, 0.67, and 0.51, respectively.

Introduction Many patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) cannot communicate. For these patients, family caregivers (family members/close friends) could assist in pain assessment. We previously adapted the Critical Care Pain Observation tool (CPOT) for family caregiver use (CPOT-Fam). In this study, we conducted preliminary clinical evaluation of the CPOT-Fam to inform further tool *** For preliminary testing, we collected (1) pain assessments of patients in the ICU from family caregivers (CPOT-Fam) and nurses (CPOT) and determined the degree of agreement (kappa coefficient, & kappa;) and (2) collected openended feedback on the CPOT-Fam from family caregivers. For refinement, we used preliminary testing data to refine the CPOT-Fam with a multidisciplinary working *** We assessed agreement between family caregiver and nurse pain scores for 29 patients. Binary agreement (& kappa;) between CPOT-Fam and CPOT item scores (scores & GE;2 considered indicative of significant pain) was fair, & kappa;= 0.43 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.18-0.69). Agreement was highest for the CPOT-Fam items ventilator compliance/vocalization (weighted & kappa;= 0.48, 95% CI 0.15-0.80) and lowest for muscle tension (weighted & kappa;= 0.10, 95% [CI] -0.17 to 0.20). Most participants (n = 19;69.0%) reported a very positive experience using the CPOT-Fam, describing it as "good" and "easy-to-use/clear/straightforward." We iteratively refined the CPOT-Fam over five cycles using the data collected until no further revisions were *** Our preliminary clinical testing suggests that family involvement in pain assessment in the ICU is well perceived. The development of Epistemological Understanding Revisited: Enhancing Reliability of the tool by Using Only Abstract Items

The aim of this paper is to describe the process of modification of the research tool designed for measuring the development of personal epistemology-Standardized Epistemological Understanding Assessment (SEUA). SEUA was constructed as an improved version of the instrument initially proposed by Kuhn et al. SEUA was proved to be a more reliable instrument than its predecessor;however, further changes were necessary to obtain better reliability and easier to administer form. During further research, we observed that test items used in this tool could be divided into abstract and concrete, which were approached differently by a subset of our participants. In their cases, the inability to suppress personal preferences in responding to concrete items threatened the tool's validity, as the instrument may measure preferences rather than epistemological beliefs in this situation. SEUA was therefore modified to create a full-abstract version (SEUA-A). Both versions were administered in an online form. The performance of two versions of the tool was compared. The study results allow us to conclude that our online SEUA-A, which consists of only abstract items, is the most reliable version of the tool.

Background: A midwife led care project targeting to decide what to do to achieve the SDG 2030 in maternal and child health, made a project team develop a tool to analyse what health care systems need, to adopt the MIDWIZE Conceptual Framework. The MIDWIZE Conceptual Framework wish to introduce the comprehensive midwifery -managed care provided women in Sweden to other countries, regions, and units where the framework is not fully applied. Methods: In order to determine what resource needs would have to be met to improve midwife led care, a tool was developed using Delphi study technique. Results: Using Delphi study technique together with on-site visits to two Sub-Saharan African countries, members of a project team went to Ethiopia and Uganda, where they visited governments, clinical or educational institutions and together with African leaders developed availability and efficiency of a tool to determine resource needs. Conclusion: If at some future time, a single country, region or unit, might want to use the tool for quality improvement purpose of midwife led care, then the tool might aid in taking the first step to determine what resources might be required and what changes might be recommended as concerns policy at the clinical or educational institution level that are part of already existing health care structures.
