The main purpose of this paper is defining a procedure that allows the tracking of the measuring point in notched specimens under static testing, investigated by full field experimental methodologies. One of the main problems is the motion of the measuring zone, associated with its compliance under increasing load. A procedure based on Digital Image Correlation (D.I.C.) aiming to define the stress concentration factor in a dynamic way has been developed. Furthermore, numerous revealing tests based on Thermographic Analysis (T.A.) have been carried out on flat plastics specimens with different hole diameters. The assessed and final tracking procedure could be used to better define the trend of temperature changes during the static tensile test, as well as measuring the stress concentration factors in notched specimens. This project details the design and implementation of an offline data processor for a radar system in order to track targets that have been detected. It associates the detections in tracks that belong to the targets in the scene. Additionally a script to simulate targets has been implemented and used to train and test the tracker developed. This tracker is developed for a ubiquitous radar demonstrator (RAD-DAR), which is in its field test stage. The demonstrator has been designed and developed by the Microwave and Radar Research Group (GMR), taking over all the stages of hardware and software design. The radar system consists of a frequency modulated continuous waveform (FMCW) ubiquitous radar that works at X-Band (8.75 GHz). The results of the first stages have already been presented in several national and international conferences for the last two years [1], [2]. The radar demonstrator uses one transmitting antenna and eight receiving antennas in order to cover the whole are to survey. Afterwards, in the post-processing of the recorded scene, beamforming and monopulse techniques are performed in order to point the beam of the receiver towards the area of interest. Also a 2D-FFT processing is carried out to obtain the information of range and speed of the targets. algorithm has been tested on data from simulated scenarios and field-test scenarios. The field tests consist in scenes with a commercial drone in controlled flights and a scen with vehicles in a highway 2.5 km away from the rad. The tests obtained show positive results because in the scene with cars it is able to separate the cars into tracks (probed at plain sight, since GPS data was not available), additionally have been compared in the case of the drone to real GPS data of the target. In this study, the phenomenon of two-phase flow was investigated in a square channel. The experiment was performed with stagnant liquid conditions. The gas and liquid dynamics of the bubbly flow were observed in two regions far from the inlet. Air was inserted through a porous media at three superficial gas velocities: 4.6 mm/s, 2.5 mm/s, and 1.4 mm/s. Two techniques were applied in the experiment to measure the bubbly flow: an optical probe and an in-house developed tracking algorithm. Measurements of the bubble interface velocity, void fraction, bubble frequency, time of flight, and Sauter mean diameter were obtained by using the optical probe. The duration of the probe measurements for all three flow rates and both regions lasted approximately 33 hours. The tracking algorithm was used to analyze the experimental data for two visual methods: shadowgraphy and Particle tracking Velocimetry (PTV). Shadowgraphy provided gas-phase measurements of the bubble centroid velocity and its fluctuations, void fraction, bubble size, and Reynolds stresses. Five data sets were acquired for each flow rate, resulting in a total of 327,540 shadowgraphy images. Liquid parameters such as the velocity, fluctuations in the velocity, and the Reynolds stresses were provided by PTV. Only one data set containing 10,918 images was obtained from liquid measurements for each flow rate. One data set was sufficient to provide reliable statistics since tracking two consecutive images lead to approximately 15,000 velocity vectors. The data obtained from this study was an effort to assist in the verification, validation, and improvement of two-phase flow simulations.

Video pulse rate variability analysis in stationary and motion conditions

Background: In the last few years, some studies have measured heart rate (HR) or heart rate variability (HRV) parameters using a video camera. This technique focuses on the measurement of the small changes in skin colour caused by blood perfusion. To date, most of these works have obtained HRV parameters in stationary conditions, and there are practically no studies that obtain these parameters in motion scenarios and by conducting an in-depth statistical analysis. Methods: In this study, a video pulse rate variability (PRV) analysis is conducted by measuring the pulse-to-pulse (PP) intervals in stationary and motion conditions. Firstly, given the importance of the sampling rate in a PRV analysis and the low frame rate of commercial cameras, we carried out an analysis of two models to evaluate their performance in the measurements. We propose a selective tracking method using the Viola-Jones and KLT algorithms, with the aim of carrying out a robust video PRV analysis in stationary and motion conditions. Data and results of the proposed method are contrasted with those reported in the state of the art. Results: The webcam achieved better results in the performance analysis of video cameras. In stationary conditions, high correlation values were obtained in PRV parameters with results above 0.9. The PP time series achieved an RMSE (mean +/- standard deviation) of 19.45 +/- 5.52 ms (1.70 +/- 0.75 bpm). In the motion analysis, most of the PRV parameters also achieved good correlation results, but with lower values as regards stationary conditions. The PP time series presented an RMSE of 21.56 +/- 6.41 ms (1.79 +/- 0.63 bpm). Conclusions: The statistical analysis showed good agreement between the reference system and the proposed method. In stationary conditions, the results of PRV parameters were improved by our method in comparison with data reported in related works. Structure, characteristics, and simulation of monsoon low-pressure systems in CFSv2 coupled model

Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) synoptic scale systems (low-pressure systems, LPS) are known to produce increased rainfall over central India (CI). Fidelity of the Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2) at simulating the LPS and their characteristics is evaluated in this study using a feature tracking algorithm. The model is able to reproduce the clustering of LPS by monsoon intraseasonal oscillations and the associated precipitation over eastern-central India. It is found that mean biases in circulation and moisture stem from cold sea surface temperature (SST) bias in the model which results in weak LPS linked rainfall events over central India. Two sensitivity experiments were carried out to study the effect of coupled dynamics of tropical basins on LPS. Suppression of active dynamics of the tropical Indian Ocean in CFSv2 causes a reduction in cold SST bias and enhanced cyclogenesis in the northern Bay of Bengal. The reduced low-level anticyclonic bias and enhanced moisture availability result in a better simulation of LPS structure, and associated precipitation over CI. Suppression of active ocean dynamics in tropical Pacific Ocean causes a perennial El-Nino type bias which restricts LPS propagation over the Indian landmass, possibly due to time-mean subsidence induced by remote El-Nino forcing. Sensitivity experiments indicate the need for improvements in the representation of tropical Indian Ocean coupled dynamics as well as convective parameterization schemes in the model for subsequent improvements in the simulation of ISM at various time scales.

In this paper, we focus our attention on the detection and tracking feature points algorithm for video sequence environment. For face image extraction, modified face detector based on Haar-like features is used. For feature points detection, we develop a new method based on the wavelet decomposition. For more accuracy, good features can be identified using Shi and Thom asi alogorithm around the detected points. Pyramidal Lucas-Kanade algorithm is used to track those points. Results show that our method extracts facial features points from video's sequence with a good accuracy.

The thesis addresses the upcoming particle physics programme foreseen at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider II (BEPCII), for which the Beijing Electron Spectrometer III (BESIII) is being upgraded. The work presented focused on the upgrade of the central tracker of the experiment by exploring the possibilities offered by a new approach using CMOS Pixel Sensors (CPS) instead of the present gas drift chamber. The MDC inner chamber of BESIII suffers from ageing effects which lead to performance degrading in terms of detection efficiency, momentum resolu- tion and spatial resolution. From the analysis in 2013, the efficiency of the MDC inner cell could be around 70% and its spatial resolution degraded from ∼ 120µm to ∼ 300µm in the worst case. This ageing effect would prevent BE- SIII from collecting the foreseen data sample and decrease the precision of the measurements. The collaboration decided therefore to upgrade the original in- ner chamber with a newly designed one or with a tracker using more advanced technology. The project of a Silicon Pixel Tracker (SPT) was proposed in this perspective. Two issues in SPT development have been studied: a low material budget of a long ladder and the detecting geometry optimization. CPS prototypes using large pixel pitches and an improved rolling-shutter readout architecture have been tested and studied to validate the sensor performance of a spatial resolution ∼ 10 µm, an integration time ∼ 20.8 µs and a power consumption around 80 mW/cm 2. Therefore, the materials from cooling system are limited to guarantee the low material budget of the ladder. For tracker optimiza- tion, a general method and the related software based on tracking algorithms, numerical geometry scans and Geant4 Monte-Carlo simulations, has been de- veloped and applied for BESIII SPT. The imaging of shear-mediated dynamic platelet behavior interacting with surface-immobilized von Willebrand factor (vWF) has tremendous potential in characterizing changes in platelet function for clinical diagnostics purposes. However, the imaging output, a series of images representing platelets adhering and rolling on the surface, poses unique, non-trivial challenges for software algorithms that reconstruct the positional trajectories of platelets. We report on an algorithm that tracks platelets using the output of such flow run experiments, taking into account common artifacts encountered by previously-published methods, and we derive seven key metrics of platelet dynamics that can be used to characterize platelet function. Extensive testing of our method using simulated platelet flow run data was carried out to validate our tracking method and derived metrics in capturing key platelet-vWF interaction-dynamics properties. Our results show that while the number of platelets present on the imaged area is the leading cause of errors, flow run data from two experiments using whole blood samples showed that our method and metrics can detect platelet property changes/differences that are concordant with the expected biological outcome, such as inhibiting key platelet receptors such as P2Y(1), glycoprotein (GP)Ib and GPIIb/IIIa. These findings support the use of our methodologies to characterize platelet function among a wide range of healthy and disease cohorts.
