The MPEG-2 compressed digital video content is being used in a number of products including the DVDs, camcorders, digital TV, and HDTV. The ability to access this widely available MPEG-2 content on low-power end-user devices such as PDAs and mobile phones depends on effective techniques for transcoding the MPEG-2 content to a more appropriate, low bitrate, video format such as MPEG-4. In this paper we present the software and algorithmic optimizations performed in developing a real time MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 video transcoder. A brief overview of the transcoding architectures is also provided. The transcoder was targeted and optimized for Windows PCs with the Intel Pentium-4 processors. The optimizations performed exploit the SIMD parallelism offered by the Intel's Pentium-class processors with MMX support. The transcoder consists of two distinct components: the MPEG-2 video decoder and the MPEG-4 video transcoder. The MPEG-2 video decoder is based on the MPEG-2 Software Simulation Group's reference implementation while MPEG-4 transcoder is developed from scratch with portions taken from the MOMUSYS implementation of the MPEG-4 video encoder. The optimizations include: 1) generic block-processing optimizations that affected both the MPEG-2 decoder and the MPEG-4 transcoder and 2) optimizations specific to the MPEG-2 video decoder and the MPEG-4 video transcoder. The optimizations resulted in significant improvements both in MPEG-2 decoding as well as the MPEG-4 transcoding. With optimizations, the total time spent by the transcoder was reduced by over 82% with MPEG-2 decoding reduced by over 56% and MPEG-4 transcoding reduced. by over 86%.

This paper discusses a transcoder, TC-GXML, designed and developed by us as a part of an ongoing research project related to design and development of a speech based web-browsing system for visually challenged. It is always easier to develop a visual application than a non-visual application based on speech interface. There are issues like Non-Standard format of HTML, due to which it is difficult for a developer to design a common non-visual interface. In the design of TC-GXML, we have considered all these issue in transforming HTML to GXML and then to VoiceXML or any other XML type. Wyner-Ziv (WZ) coding of video utilizes simple encoders and highly complex decoders. A transcoder from a WZ codec to a traditional codec can potentially increase the range of applications for WZ codecs. We present a transcoder scheme from the most popular WZ codec architecture to a DPCM/DCT codec. As a proof of concept, we implemented this transcoder using a simple pixel domain WZ codec and the standard H.263+. The transcoder design aims at reducing complexity, since the transcoder has to perform both WZ decoding and DPCM/DCT encoding, including motion estimation. New approaches are used to map motion vectors for such a transcoder. Results are presented to demonstrate the transcoder performance.

Recently, video transmission services over networks are getting very popular thanks to the development of network infrastructure. From the viewpoint of efficient network bandwidth utilization, multicast is a key technology that provides high Qos services. However, it is very difficult to obtain high Qos for each individual user since the requirement and environment of each user is so different due to the heterogeneity of current network and terminals. Hence we propose a transcoder controlling scheme that enable each user to obtain high Qos by utilizing transcoders. We assume that transcoder functionality will be installed over routers in the future next generation network, and hence, our proposed scheme is based on the network. The proposed scheme manipulates multicast trees and transcoders in the network. Moreover, the proposed scheme minimizes the deterioration of video streams caused by transcoding procedures by limiting the number of transcoding. Even more, the proposed scheme does not cause any extra delay by manipulating multicast tree. Finally simulation experiments evalute the proposed scheme from the viewpoint of network bandwidth consumption and clarify the efficiency and the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

In this paper, we propose an output packet remultiplexing scheme for an MPEG-2 multiprogram transport stream transcoder. The proposed scheme avoids STD buffer failure by dividing the packets into Program Specific Information (PSI), audio, and video and implementing remultiplexing. Specifically, PSI packets are multiplexed at a constant time interval, audio packets are multiplexed at the same times as the input times of the audio TS packets, and video packets are multiplexed so that the outputs of the video TS packets are at equal intervals. To meet demands for communication between multimedia source and mobile system, transcoding from MPEG-2 to AVS-M is a key technique. However, the advanced intra and inter mode decision techniques adopted in AVS-M have a high computing requirement, which limits the real time implementation in mobile environment In this paper, we propose a prediction mode decision optimization algorithm to reduce the transcoding complexity based on our previous work. Analyzing the relation among the prediction errors of blocks and doing adaptive motion re-estiamtion, we fast decide the best inter mode. Utilizing the directional feature of DCT coefficients, we fast decide the best intra mode. The simulation results show that the proposed MPEG-2 to AVS-M transcoder with mode decision optimization can be effectively adopted for mobile video communications.

To guarantee the real-time transmission of a video stream,based on the stochastic optimal control method,a frame layer adaptive rate control algorithm for the wireless transcoder is proposed,which is capable of dynamically determining the transcoder's objective bit rate,according to the bandwidth variation of the wireless channel and the bufier occupancy. A joint design scheme is proposed to optimize the up/down scaler and the motion vector estimation module in the transcoder system. The proposed scheme first optimizes the resolution scaler for a fixed motion vector, and then a new motion vector is estimated for the fixed scaler. These two steps are iteratively repeated until they reach a local optimum solution. In the optimization of the scaler, we derive an adaptive version of a cubic convolution interpolater to enlarge or reduce digital images by arbitrary scaling factors. The adaptation is performed at each macroblock of an image. In order to estimate an optimal motion vector, a temporary motion vector is composed from the given motion vectors. Then the motion vector is refined over a narrow search range. It is well-known that this refinement scheme provides the comparable performance compared to the full search method. Simulation results show that a jointly optimized system based on the proposed algorithms outperforms the conventional systems. We can also see that the algorithms exhibit significant improvement in the minimization of information loss compared with other techniques.
