The MPEG-3DGH group is developing a new standard for dynamic mesh encoding, known as Video-based Dynamic Mesh coding (V-DMC). One of the main challenges in the V-DMC encoding process is extracting temporally corresponding information required for the inter-frame coding when dealing with inputs that have time-varying connectivity. To provide an efficient and effective solution, we propose a fast supervoxel-based base mesh generation method complient with V-DMC inter-frame coding. Our method includes four steps: 1) Initial supervoxel segmentation on two given frames; 2) Supervoxel-based shape matching to extract an initial correspondence set; 3) Refined supervoxel segmentation and shape matching with the assistance of the initial correspondence set, which outputs a refined correspondence set with more correspondence vertices and higher accuracy; 4) Generation of inter-frame base meshes using the refined correspondence set. Experiments on the MPEG V-DMC test sequences demonstrate that our method achieves BD-rate improvements over the VDMC v6.0 in terms of D1, D2, Luma, Cb, and Cr metrics by -9.2%, -9.3%, -14.1%, -14.6%, and -9.7%, respectively. Additionally, the proposed method only increases the encoding time from 100% to 105% while suppressing the decoding time from 100% to 99%.

As consumer devices become increasingly intelligent and interconnected, efficient data transfer solutions for machine tasks have become essential. This paper presents an overview of the latest Feature coding for Machines (FCM) standard, part of MPEG-AI and developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). FCM supports AI-driven applications by enabling the efficient extraction, compression, and transmission of intermediate neural network features. By offloading computationally intensive operations to base servers with high computing resources, FCM allows low-powered devices to leverage large deep learning models. Experimental results indicate that the FCM standard maintains the same level of accuracy while reducing bitrate requirements by 75.90% compared to remote inference.

In this study, we propose an efficient atlas coding strategy for the object-based MPEG Immersive Video (MIV) coding standard. The main concept of Object-based MIV is to use a video codec, such as High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) or Versatile Video coding (VVC), to compress the 2D atlas videos generated from objects of interest videos taken through multiple cameras located in multiple positions in 3D space. However, the current coding method on the atlas in MIV is not effective for coding the objects of interest in videos because there are some cases where the atlas has an unnecessary area generated from the MIV encoder. If there is such an area that is not used in the atlas, the amount of computation required for coding can be reduced by decreasing the atlas resolution during encoding. The proposed method shows that the weighted-to-spherically uniform PSNR (WS-PSNR) based Bjøntegaard delta rate gains between -8.2% and -10.1%, and the Immersive Video PSNR (IV-PSNR) based on the Bjøntegaard delta rate gains between -5.7% and -7.1% compared to the reference model of MIV.

The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is developing a new standard, i.e., Video-based Dynamic Mesh coding (V-DMC), for dynamic meshes with time-varying topology. The time-varying topology and attributes challenge the V-DMC encoder in exploiting temporal correlations for redundancy minimization. Currently, the inter-frame coding in V-DMC is constrained to tracked sequences having consistent topology, with non-tracked ones predominantly using intra-coding. Texture images, as the dominant bit rate component, are inadequately compressed in Random Access (RA) mode. The precision of the mesh registration algorithm directly influences the intra-frame blocks’ proportion during the inter-frame coding of texture images, thereby affecting its coding efficiency. This paper proposed a colored point cloud-based mesh registration technique to bolster the intra-frame coding efficiency for non-tracked sequences. This method transforms the mesh into a colored point cloud and employs an inter-frame search algorithm for enhanced motion search efficiency. Local deformation near the matching point is then ascertained through directional searches at individual points. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method achieves a geometric gain of 4.1% and a texture gain of 6.47% for non-tracked sequences.

With the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content comes the need for more advanced technologies to distinguish fake medias from authentic ones. Current standards for authenticating media assets are developed by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity and the International Press Telecommunications Council. The former focuses on providing complete provenance for media assets to allow users to backtrack the history of creation and modification, while the latter establishes a standard method for asserting and storing information related to media assets. JPEG Trust, on the other hand, is an evolving standard that aims to provide a way of proving the trustworthiness of media assets, thus directly addressing the aforementioned issue. Through the generation of a trust report, JPEG Trust allows users to directly view the evaluation results of the trustworthiness of media assets and make decisions accordingly. JPEG Trust is expected to bring application values for countries, platforms, and individuals and commercial values targeting companies and the wider society. However, there still exists potential challenges for JPEG Trust that demand a solution. With the possibilities JPEG Trust brings, it is expected to leave considerable impacts on the trustworthiness of the future after addressing challenges along the way. © 2017 IEEE.

The widely known Discrete Fourier transform (DFT), the frequency-domain representation of a finite-length time-domain sequence is an orthog-onal transform and has been known for a very long time and has found many application. The popularity of the DFT increased tremendously after the publication of the Fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm by Cooley and Tukey in 1965 [1]. Orthogonal transforms offer many ad-vantages, namely fast computational speeds, less stor-age space, less rounding off errors, etc. The benefits of the orthogonal transforms stem from the fact that they can be factored based on matrix computations. Data compression, digital filter design, speech processing, image and video processing are applications where the orthogonal transforms have made a significant impact.

The rapid advancement of 3D sensing and rendering technologies has expanded the use of point clouds across various fields. To address the challenge of managing large point clouds, Point Cloud Compression (PCC) has gained significant research interest in recent years. The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) has played an important role in standardizing PCC by designing frameworks such as Solid Geometry-based Point Cloud Compression (Solid G-PCC), using octree and Trisoup to compress the geometry of dynamic point clouds. This paper introduces a skip coding mode to improve the inter-frame coding by early terminating octree and Trisoup node generation based on a rate-distortion optimization consideration. Experiments show a 6.3% average improvement in geometry coding efficiency.

This paper proposes a novel video coding method that selectively switches between Low Complexity Enhancement Video coding (LCEVC) and a base codec at the Group of Pictures (GOP) level, leveraging the capabilities of LCEVC. LCEVC, which is standardized as MPEG-5 Part 2, is a cutting-edge video coding standard designed to enhance the efficiency of conventional codecs. However, due to its layered structure, there are cases where better video quality can be achieved without using LCEVC. To address this, the proposed method dynamically toggles the use of LCEVC, depending on the video coding results of each GOP. Experimental results show that this adaptive approach improves video quality by 16.18 % compared to LCEVC.

Versatile Video coding (VVC), standardized in 2022 as ITU-T Recommendation H.266, ISO/IEC 23090–3 and MPEG-I Part3, is the latest block-based hybrid video coding standard which claims to fulfill all the requirements of todays and tomorrow's video applications. VVC defines more tools to increase compression efficiency while maintaining the same level of quality. The tradeoff is the computational complexity. H.266/VVC, especially the intra-coding loop, is computationally very complex due to its nature of iteratively trying all possible QTMT partitioning tree alternatives with all options of compression technologies. In this paper, we focus on the intra-coding loop of VVC for 8K video and study the effects of technologies like MTS, LFNST, MIP etc. on the compression efficiency (bits), quality (Y-PSNR), and computational complexity (runtime). By switching off all those optional technologies, we observe 46.07% runtime gain with only 5.00% increase in bitrate, and 0.0423 dB decrease in Y-PSNR on average. Since this is a remarkable gain in complexity with a limited effect on efficiency and quality, this tradeoff can be taken into consideration for many 8K applications utilizing VVC.

3D dynamic meshes are extensively utilized to represent immersive 3D content. The need to transmit a vast quantity of these captured dynamic meshes over networks has created a significant demand for efficient dynamic mesh compression techniques. In response to this critical requirement, the Moving Picture Expert Group (MPEG), an international standard working group of ISO, initiated a new project in October 2021, called Video-based Dynamic Mesh coding (V-DMC). This initiative seeks to leverage existing, mature video codecs and their prevalent hardware as well as direct usage of future video coding solutions. The inaugural version of the V-DMC test model was released in July 2022. Over the past two years, continuous efforts have led to the development of V-DMC test model version 8.0. This paper aims to detail the technical advancements and provide an update on the current status of V-DMC standardization activities.
