In this paper, we propose an authoring tool for creating mobile mixed reality games (MMRGs), referred to as M2RGC (Mobile Mixed Reality Game Creator). Goal is to transform the game creation process in a task that is as interesting as playing the game itself. Therefore we offer a user-friendly interface through which different MMRGs can be created by defining the objects used in the game, their behavior and interaction with sensors (e.g. GPS, compass). The tool itself uses the power of MPEG-4 BIFS[1] capabilities, such as the possibility of grouping multimedia assets in a scene. We build a wrapper over these MPEG-4 BIFS functionalities allowing anyone to discover the experience of MMRGs creation. Concerning the client runtime for playing the game on mobile phones, we deploy a MPEG-4 player on the Windows Mobile and Android platforms.

The recently presented recursive least squares dictionary learning algorithm (RLS-DLA) is tested in a general image compression application. Dictionaries are learned in the pixel domain and in the 9/7 wavelet domain, and then tested in a straightforward compression scheme. Results are compared with state-of-the-art compression methods. The proposed compression scheme using RLS-DLA learned dictionaries in the 9/7 wavelet domain performs better than using dictionaries learned by other methods. The compression rate is just below the JPEG-2000 rate which is promising considering the simple entropy coding used.

Shape matching is a very critical problem in computer vision, and many smart features have been designed in recent literature for improving the similarity measure between pairs of shapes, and most of them consider either distribution of the sample contour points, or convexity/concavity property of the contour. In this paper, we design a novel shape feature to capture the Co-Occurrence Pattern (COP) of the points sampled from any given shape contour, and each pattern is described by \textbf{Self-Similarity} which investigates the spatial co-occurrence relation among all the sample points. We test our feature on three famous shape databases: MPEG-7 CE-Shape-1 part B, Tari1000, and Kimia99 data set for shape matching and retrieval. The experimental results show that the proposed descriptor achieves higher computational efficiency with no significant performance loss.

In this work we present an effective and computationally simple algorithm for image compression based on Hilbert Scanning of Embedded quadTrees (Hi-SET). It allows to represent an image as an embedded bitstream along a fractal function. Embedding is an important feature of modern image compression algorithms, in this way Salomon in [1, pg. 614] cite that another feature and perhaps a unique one is the fact of achieving the best quality for the number of bits input by the decoder at any point during the decoding. Hi-SET possesses also this latter feature. Furthermore, the coder is based on a quadtree partition strategy, that applied to image transformation structures such as discrete cosine or wavelet transform allows to obtain an energy clustering both in frequency and space. The coding algorithm is composed of three general steps, using just a list of significant pixels.

We propose a method to avoid false positive segmentation symbol decoding at the end of an erroneous bit plane in JPEG2000 encoded images transmitted over error prone environments. Within the JPEG2000 standard, its segmentation symbol is a utility for error detection. If this symbol is not decoded at the end of a bit plane, error will be detected; and the mentioned bit plane and the remaining ones will be filled by zeros-Zero Filling (ZF) method. If this symbol is decoded in the expected place by mistake, the erroneous bit plane will be taken as the true bit plane. Here, a technique based on non-zero decoded coefficient distribution in bit planes, using generalized Gaussian distribution (GGD) model, is investigated to avoid wrong segmentation symbol detection. The resulting decoder will be robust against errors caused by wrong segmentation symbol detection.

To protect copyright of digital images, many watermarking algorithms have been proposed in recent years. These methods are divided into two groups of spatial and frequency domains. Robustness of a watermark against signal processing modifications is important and most of the existing methods try to address this issue. In this paper a Contourlet based image watermarking algorithm is proposed which embeds a watermark in the singular values of the Contourlet transform of an image. Watermarking is done in three scales of Contourlet transform Redundant embedding of the watermark in different scales causes higher robustness of the proposed method In the extraction phase, the final watermark is derived by voting amongst the three extracted watermarks. The experimental results and comparison with the other Contourlet based method shows that the proposed method has better robustness against some of the usual image processing attacks, such as JPEG compression, Salt and Pepper, and Gaussian noise.

We propose a new Reduced Reference model for assessing the quality of JPEG and JPEG2000 images. We utilize the Haar Wavelet Decomposition as a tool to model the image information along with the distortions presents in JPEG or JPEG2000 images. One of the superiority of our method is the ability to independently assess the quality of JPEG and JPEG2000 images without using any additional discrimination method. Our method also incorporate a simple design to model the distortions in the image without using complex Human Visual System (HVS) model. Despite its simple design, our method has demonstrated an accurate and reliable quality metric. Experimental results using several categories of JPEG and JPEG2000 images using LIVE Image Database Release 2 will be presented to verify our metric. The results of our experiments show that the method has achieved high correlation with the subjective data in most of the categories.

Efficient rate-distortion optimal wavelet packet basis selection for the coding framework of JPEG2000 has been developed and evaluated. JPEG2000 Part 2 allows the application of arbitrary decomposition structures (wavelet packet bases). However, only a subset of all possible wavelet packet bases is permitted in the JPEG2000 standard. As we have developed a rate-distortion optimal wavelet packet basis selection algorithm, we can determine the cost of these restrictions for the first time. A further focus is on the efficient implementation of wavelet packet basis selection. The best basis selection in a rate-distortion sense is computationally feasible, yet not inexpensive. Several more efficient wavelet packet selection algorithms have been developed and are compared to the actually best solution. Our evaluations employ state-of-the-art quality assessment tools supplementary to PSNR evaluations.
