Single sensor cameras use color filter arrays(CFA) to capture the images. The sensors in a CFA are arranged to capture any one of the Red, Green or Blue components of a pixel in an interleaved way. The bit rates attained while compressing the captured CFA images are high for all the standard compression methods. Different strategy has to be adopted for compressing CFA images due to the unevenness caused by interleaving of components. This paper proposes a method by which the CFA images are smoothed by 5/3 wavelet transform and compressed by conserving the central subject. The background of the image is kept with certain level of loss. This method reduces the bit rate comparing to the standard methods.

In the forensics analysis of raw evidence data, fragmentation point detection is crucial to differentiate fragments of evidence and identify potentially corrupted data. This need is even more prominent for JPEG images since the chance is high that an erroneous data block passes a normal JPEG decoder without triggering any errors. Therefore, it is important to verify the content of the decoded image data to determine if fragmentation and/or corruption has occurred. In this paper, we propose three different techniques for the detection of fragmentation point based on the image contents, as well as a detector built by combining these methods. We evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques and the combined detector by implementing them on a standard JPEG decoder and testing them on more than 2000 fragmented images generated from over 1200 JPEG photos.

This paper proposes a dual mode video decoder with 4-level temporal/spatial scalability and 32/64-bit adjustable memory bus width. A design automation environment for simulation and verification is established to automatically verify the correctness and completeness of the proposed design. Using a 0.13 um CMOS technology, it comprises 439Kgates/10.9KB SRAM and consumes 2~328mW in decoding CIF~HD1080 videos at 3.75~30fps when operating at 1~150MHz, respectively.

The impact of using different lossless compression algorithms when compressing biometric iris sample data from several public iris databases is investigated. In particular, we relate the application of dedicated lossless image codecs like JPEG-LS, CALIC, and PNG, lossless variants of lossy codecs like JPEG2000 and JPEG XR, and two general purpose compression schemes to rectilinear iris sample imagery from seven public databases. The application of additional prediction as a preprocessing strategy as well as a conversion to a set of binary images to enable JBIG application is evaluated. The results are discussed in the light of the recent ISO/IEC FDIS 19794-6 and ANSI/NIST-ITL 1-2011 standards and IREX recommendations.

Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMNs) provide an all-IP wireless platform for multimedia service delivery. The integrated communication system creates new perspectives for wireless video distribution and quality provisioning. Depending on the mobility patterns of the nomadic users, the link layer characteristics may rapidly change. Furthermore, mobility and service adaptation events like network handovers, video bit rate switching, or codec changeovers, may affect the user perception. Provisioning “always best connected” video services requires a thorough knowledge of video quality perception in NGMNs. In this paper, we address this problem. A subjective test including 50 NGMN conditions has been carried out. They were arranged in groups to assess the impact on perceived quality of 1) the access technology and network handover, 2) video codecs and codec changeover, 3) video bit rate and bit rate switching, and 4) to provide guidelines for packet loss adaptation. We could identify the perceptual bottlenecks of the future wireless communication and are able to propose perceptual guidelines for mobility management. In this way, this paper contributes to the service quality improvement of future wireless communications.

In some online transcoding applications, such as web browsing, web contents are transcoded into the same or a different format to reduce bandwidth consumption and speed up web access for narrow bands, such as wireless channels. In addition to the rate-distortion performance of the transcoder, transcoder complexity plays a crucial role in real time transcoding applications, since it directly affects the total access latency. This paper proposes and formulates the joint optimization problem of latency and distortion, which is related to both the rate-distortion performance and the complexity of the transcoder. A practical solution is presented to choose the right transcoder based on the available bandwidth at the time of transcoding, so as to minimize the total latency for a given distortion constraint. This is especially useful for wireless communications where the available bandwidth keeps changing due to different contributing factors.

Recently, the number of mobile users equipped with wireless devices capable of video streaming on the go has increased immensely. The trend follows the ever expanding choice of multi-access wireless technologies to which they connect and the growing popularity of mobile video applications. In this paper, we evaluate mobile video streaming over heterogeneous wireless networks. We design and implement a hybrid evaluation framework consisting of a testbed network and an emulator. We focus on the network-layer quality of service (QoS) for multihomed mobile hosts moving at pedestrian or vehicular speeds across WiMAX and Wi-Fi networks. Extensive experiments are carried out running the widely adopted MPEG-2 standard and the current MPEG-4/AVC standard of increasing dominance. Experimental results present the performance of mobile video streaming in different scenarios depending on the user's movement speeds and video coding standards. It is further demonstrated that MPEG-4/AVC outperformed MPEG-2 in terms of throughput, packet delays, packet loss and jitter.

This paper presents a novel algorithm based on Chaotic sequences that embeds authentication information into color JPEG 2000 images. The algorithm uses low frequency coefficients on to which the authentication information is embedded by means of sequences generated from a chaotic machine which essentially depends on the initial conditions. This fragile algorithm allows detection and identification of any alterations or damage done to the copyrighted image. Simulation results shown that the algorithm effectively counters the illegal tampering and piracy of copyrighted color JPEG 2000 images.

Motion estimation is an important part of video encoding systems. This paper presents a novel enhanced modified orthogonal search (EMOS) algorithm for block based motion estimation. The performance of this algorithm is evaluated with various video sequences and the results are compared to a traditional well-known full search algorithm (FSA), three step search (3SS), orthogonal search (OS), and modified orthogonal search (MOS). This paper introduces a half way stop technique to reduce computational complexity in the existing OS & MOS. The centre biased search pattern is facilitated for small motions. The enhanced modified orthogonal based search pattern is investigated in comparison with orthogonal and modified orthogonal search pattern and demonstrates significant speedup gain over them. The proposed EMOS algorithm can find the same motion vector with fewer search points than the OS & MOS algorithm. The quality of the reconstructed frame is comparable with that of the full search method, 3SS, OS & MOS. The advantage of proposed motion estimation technique is further justified by experimental results.
