Online Engineering allows users to perform tele-operation over the Internet. It is used in collaboratories, distance learning curriculum, and remote maintenance processes. Tele-operation over the Internet is however restrained by the development time and cost of ad hoc solutions. These solutions a) are hardly reusable, b) present a low fidelity of the human computer interface, and c) barely enable pervasive accesses (standalone clients or Web forms). We present in this paper a novel approach for building tele operation Human Computer Interfaces based on interactive multimedia. The end-user commands the remote device using interactive elements in the multimedia interface. The feedback information is seen as a combination of natural video content, produced by an IP camera capturing the instrument and synthetic graphics corresponding to elements of the device input interface (control panel). The proposed architecture fosters the reuses and gives a high level of interoperability between command terminals, since the interface can be displayed in any terminal able to lay out multimedia content.

In this paper, a high speed pipelined architecture with pipeline scheduler is presented for the JPEG2000 arithmetic encoder. The new design has removed the need for the additional hardware units for the procedures of the encoding process with suitably controlling the pipeline stages. The proposed system is described in Verilog HDL and targeted for the Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA family. Results of the timing analysis showed that designed architecture is able to achieve 132 Msymbols/sec throughput.

This paper proposes a method for comprehensive, objective image quality characterisation using an image quality evaluation framework based on gradient information representation. The method provides an in-depth analysis of image quality by quantifying: common information, information loss and information artifacts. The results demonstrate and quantify a number of well known issues and provide a useful insight into a no-reference image quality assessment.

This paper addresses the problem of application mapping for Mesh-of-Tree (MoT) based Network-on-Chip. It proposes a new algorithm based on Kernighan-Lin partitioning to identify closely related cores of the application. The nodes are then mapped to the topology using another heuristic algorithm. The MoT mapping results have been compared with the mesh-mapping results reported in the literature for some benchmark applications. Both static communication cost and dynamic costs (including latency and throughput) of the mapped solution have been compared.

This paper proposes new software-based techniques for speeding and reducing the complexity of the deblocking filter used in the state-of-the-art H.264 international video coding standard to improve the visual quality of the decoded video frames. The proposed techniques are classified as standard-compliant and standard-noncompliant techniques. The standard-compliant techniques optimize the standard filter through optimizing the boundary strength calculation and group filtering of macroblocks. The standard-noncompliant techniques predict the new boundary strength and edge detection conditions from previous values. Experimental results on both an embedded platform and a desktop PC show significant increment in performance improvement that reaches 47% for the standard-compliant techniques and 80% for the standard-noncompliant techniques. They also demonstrate that for standard-noncompliant techniques the quality degradation computed using the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio is insignificant.

The paper presents a significantly fast INTRA mode and direction prediction algorithm for MPEG-2 to H.264/AVC time sensitive transcoders for mobile applications. The mode and direction prediction in H.264/AVC encoder is responsible for a huge portion of the delay in the transcoder. An efficient transcoder would take advantage of the information stored in MPEG-2 bitstream (i.e. DCT coefficients) to simplify the IN-TRA prediction in H.264/AVC. Based on the spatial activity analysis using a smoothness determining factor and an edge orientation detector, an early mode decision technique and an INTRA direction prediction for each mode are proposed. The proposed algorithm utilizes the DCT coefficients of the MPEG-2 to eliminate redundant operations in the H.264/AVC encoder part of the transcoder. The Experimental results; using frames with different resolution; show 92% transcoding time elimination at slight PSNR degradation (less than 3.5%) compared with the conventional transcoder.

This paper presents the design of a system which includes: a 5 Mpixel CMOS sensor, a high performance DSP and a network interface, performing video data acquisition, compression and transmission over IP. The software and hardware implementation are presented, the compression algorithm (MPEG2) and transmission protocols (RTP, RTCP) are described. Also the CMOS sensor functions management is integrated into the system. The implementation process is followed by optimization, leading to a competitive performance/cost ratio.

With mean-squared error D as a goal, it is well known that one may approach the rate-distortion function R(D) of a nonbandlimited, continuous-time Gaussian source by sampling at a sufficiently high rate, applying the Karhunen-Loeve transform to sufficiently long blocks, and then independently coding the transform coefficients of each type. In particular, the coefficients of a given type are ideally encoded with performance attaining a suitably chosen point on the first-order rate-distortion function of that type of coefficient. This paper considers a similar sample-and-transform coding scheme in which ideal coding of coefficients is replaced by coding with some specified family of quantizers, whose operational rate-distortion function is convex. A prime example is scalar quantization with entropy-coding and, if needed for convexity, time sharing. It is shown that when the sampling rate is large, the operational rate-distortion function of such a scheme comes within a finite constant of R(D). Applied to the scalar quantization family, the finiteness of this bound contrasts with a recent result showing that direct scalar quantization of samples (without a transform) has unbounded rate when distortion is held constant and sampling rate becomes large, even when the quantized samples are compressed to their entropy-rate. Thus, at high sampling rates, the transform reduces the loss due to scalar quantization from something infinite to something finite.

This paper proposes a new approach to combined spatial (Intra) prediction and adaptive transform coding in block-based video and image compression. Context-adaptive spatial prediction from available, previously decoded boundaries of the block, is followed by optimal transform coding of the prediction residual. The derivation of both the prediction and the adaptive transform for the prediction error, assumes a separable first-order Gauss-Markov model for the image signal. The resulting optimal transform is shown to be a close relative of the sine transform with phase and frequencies such that basis vectors tend to vanish at known boundaries and maximize energy at unknown boundaries. The overall scheme switches between the above sine-like transform and discrete cosine transform (per direction, horizontal or vertical) depending on the prediction and boundary information. It is implemented within the H.264/AVC intra mode, is shown in experiments to significantly outperform the standard intra mode, and achieve significant reduction of the blocking effect.

Along with the rapid development of information processing, people attach more and more importance to image compression. Most coding techniques for color image compression employ a de-correlation approach, the RGB space is transformed into a de-correlation color space, then the de-correlated color components are encode separately by the same method for examples JPEG and JPEG2000. A different image encoding method of correlation and wavelet transform approach (CWA) based on human visual system, is presented in this paper. Taking into account the human visual characteristics and instead of de-correlating color components, we employ the existing-color correlation Y, G, R components, after Wavelet transform of these components, G component Wavelet Coefficient is the base component to approximate Y, R components' Wavelet Coefficient on the basis of the least linear squares. Then in order to enhance the algorithm's performance, when the Wavelet Coefficient approximation of Y, R components, different sub-band choice different size block on different sub-band characteristics. G component Wavelet Coefficients after of quantization is encoded using adaptive Huffman coder based on different sub-band, and Huffman bit stream can be encoded using arithmetic coder. The Wavelet Coefficient approximation of Y, R components convert char stream, then is encoded using Huffman coder. Experimental results show that the proposed correlation and wavelet transform image coder based on human visual system offers coding performance superior to presently available algorithms based on the common de-correlation approach.
