In the modern compression system, besides high compression qualities and low bit rates, others extra functional capabilities become more and more important. For the use of satellite images, the data size is always very large and the users might be just interested in some regions of a satellite image. Thus it is an ideal way to keep the better quality in the regions of interest than in others in a satellite image. In JPEG2000 standard part I, the region of interest (ROI) is implemented by MAXSHIFT, which needs to generate an ROI mask with extra memory space. For the computers in a satellite, lower computing complexity and fewer memory are required. Thus the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems Recommendation (CCSDS) proposes a specification of image data compression for satellite images. An ROI extension based on CCSDS is proposed in our study. Experimental results show that it saves more compression time and moreover it is competitive with the JPEG2000 standard without the memory used for masks.

For improving the detection efficiency of hidden information blind detection system, an improved hidden information detection method based rough set theory is proposed against the high dimension of statistical features and high relevance about images. First, an improved general steganalysis system framework is proposed with practical method and steps; second, the Algorithm based on the rough set theory reduces feature dimension, computational complexity of classification, and eliminates the relevance among statistical features; third, the realization procedure is offered in this algorithm; the SVM classifier is employed to test the spread spectrums steganalysis Cox and Piva. And the large body of experimental results proves that the algorithm is correct and with a higher time efficiency and accuracy than Shi's and the method mentioned in reference.

This paper presents a new image quality assessment based on the curvelet decomposition. The curvelet transform is introduced for its ability to represent the curves of images at different scales and directions. Unlike existing methods, the proposed image quality assessment takes into account the geometrical content of the image at different scales and directions. The proposed measure has been tested on LIVE database and was compared to other image quality assessments. The obtained results expressed in terms of correlation with subjective evaluation on the database demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed image quality metric.

Despite the increasing importance gained by enterprise standards in the past few years, and the unquestionable goals reached (mainly regarding interoperability among learning enterprise model) current enterprise standards are yet not sufficiently aware of the context of the user. This means that only a limited support for adaptation regarding individual characteristics is currently being provided. The problem is that enterprise environment has just single information media. That does not include multimedia data and does not give interesting for user. In the paper, the discrete Laplace estimator with a variable moment order is considered. The application of this model in the image and video compression based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and quantization such as MPEG and JPEG standards is presented. Modeling the distribution based on the discrete variables collected at the decoder side can be used for the modified image reconstruction. The selection of the optimal moment order m for the discrete Laplace estimator with a variable moment order can outperform other discrete Laplace estimators in terms of PSNR criteria for different quality compression ratios and for the Y, U and V components.

This paper presents the design and performance measurement of the hardware JPEG codec on an ARM926EJS emulation base board. JPEG is one of the best compression algorithms for still images. It preserves the quality with high compression ratio. JPEG codec encodes and decodes coloured as well grey image formats. The design exploits the pipeline architecture for high throughput. Overall size of the codec is controlled by sharing the common resources between JPEG encoder and decoder. Hardware JPEG codec was synthesized for Xilinx ¿ Virtex II FPGA device on ARM926EJS emulation base board. The paper covers all the RTL modifications done for performance measurement. FPGA resource utilization is tabulated at post-synthesis and post-mapping stage. Real time performance measurement is done for encoder and decoder for colored and grey images.

This paper presents an architecture for Multiple Reference Frame Motion Estimation (MRF-ME) targeting H.264/AVC standard. MRF introduces issues regarding processing throughput and memory access. In this context, this work proposes a memory-aware architecture for MRF-ME that relies on data reuse and current block parallelism. The data reuse scheme guarantees a reduction of almost 70% in the number of external memory accesses when compared with a traditional approach. The architecture was synthesized targeting a Xilinx FPGA device and it is capable of processing high definition (HD) videos in real time (30fps), with very good processing rates results when compared with related works. This solution is based on one single view, but it is being used as base to design an architecture which will be able to process multi view videos as defined in the H.264/AVC MVC extension.

In this paper a watermarking technique has been proposed. The proposed watermarking technique has been incorporated in the JPEG compression standard. Unlike conventional watermarking techniques which are generally based on manipulation of the AC component in DCT domain, the proposed approach utilizes the DC component that is perceptually significant part, to embed the watermark. The watermark embedding is done using a bitplane approach. The proposed scheme does not require original image for the extraction of watermark thus making it a blind watermarking scheme. The results have shown that the proposed watermarking technique is imperceptible and secure. The proposed scheme is also compared with the QIM based watermarking scheme, and it is shown that the proposed scheme is simple in implementation and suitable for the authentication and tamper detection. Moreover, a detailed study has been done to choose the suitable DC component bitplane to embed the watermark.

Multimedia services have gained an increasing interest of industry and the research community over the last decade. In this paper we present an RTP-based platform for video streaming evaluation in simulated environments. We have developed a new NS-2 module providing an accurate RTP and RTCP implementation (following strictly the RFC 3550 specification) and we propose to combine it with several tools that allow the evaluation of most common video quality metrics. As RTCP feedback capabilities have been added, source-based control techniques could be tested using this platform.
