In this paper a bio-inspired and automotive-compliant system for traffic safety is presented. This work is the first complete application of Address Event Representation (AER) techniques to a real world problem in an automotive environment. The main goal is to detect hands driver activity in the driving wheel area. Our system is based on AER, where the more relevant visual information in the image is first processed. Different pixel activity detection and AER event generation methods have been deeply evaluated. Obtained results are compared with a classical computer vision system based on JPEG transmission. It has been proved that for the scan AER event generation method the performance over JPEG is improved. As our work results show, AER technology could be an effective alternative to be considered in real world conditions. Promising results have been obtained in an automotive-compliant environment.

In this paper, a novel image watermarking scheme based on independent component analysis (ICA) is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the original image is sub-sampled firstly to obtain four sub-images, and the features of the original image are extracted by performing ICA to these sub-images, and then the feature, which has the largest variance, is selected out to be watermarked on its block DCT coefficients. During the embedding, human visual system (HVS) is used to determine which regions should be watermarked in order to balance the imperceptibility and the robustness. Experiments show that the watermark can be extracted blindly, and it is robust to common watermark attack and image processing, such as JPEG compression, noising, scaling, filtering, histogram equalization, and so on.

In this paper, we propose a new real transform (rCS-SCHT) derived from the conjugate symmetric sequency-ordered complex Hadamard transform (CS-SCHT) for document image compression. Like the CS-SCHT, the proposed transform is also an orthogonal transform. The transform computation is very simple and it requires only addition/subtractions with the use of a fast algorithm. This transform possesses good energy compaction property which makes it suitable to be employed in document image compression. Simulations are conducted in order to demonstrate the energy compaction capability of the transform as compared to the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and the Walsh Hadamard transform (WHT), particularly for scanned document images. Further discussions on the bit rate vs peak signal-to-noise (PSNR) performances of the proposed transform, the DCT and the WHT are presented using the default JPEG setting for simulations.

This paper proposes an efficient prefetching strategy for interactive remote browsing of sequences of high resolution JPEG 2000 images. As a result of the inherent latency of client-server communication, the experiments of this study prove that a significant benefit, can be achieved, in terms of both quality and responsiveness, by anticipating certain data from the rest of the sequence while an image is being explored. This paper proposes a model based on the quality progression of the image in order to estimate which percentage of the bandwidth is dedicated to prefetch data. This solution can be easily implemented over any existing remote browsing architecture.

Adaptive HTTP video streaming has gained popularity in providing live feed from the events to mobile consumers. For reaching the widest possible audience, video service providers usually need to generate multiple video representations from the input stream suitable for different clients, which can increase the server-side energy consumption and processor load. HTTP streaming enables client adaptation against network fluctuations, but the server is usually unaware of the client(s) network capacity and device characteristics. With this knowledge, the server could control and allocate the encoding resources better according to the client(s) needs and reduce the server energy consumption and load. In this paper, we provide energy-aware dynamic encoding control for MPEG-DASH live streaming, which can benefit especially when representations are unpopular or network is under congestion. To achieve this, we utilize messages between client and encoding server based on the upcoming MPEG standard initiative Server and Network Assisted DASH (SAND). The results indicate that our dynamic encoding control signaling can reduce energy consumption in the server, create storage savings and therefore decrease also server costs.

This approach brings about new problems that need to be addressed, such as automated selection of target regions and ROI preservation parameters. By combining variations of traditional metrics and newly developed segmentation-based image quality metrics, we illustrate several ways to quantify target distortion using ROI preserving compression for various methods including JPEG2000.

The resistance of crypto-compression codograms to errors in the data channel is evaluated. The quality of reconstructions of images presented in BMP, JPEG, PNG and TIFF formats under conditions of data channel errors is evaluated. Different variants of errors in different components of crypto-compression codograms are considered. It is shown that crypto-compression codograms of images have good resistance to errors in the transmission channel, which occur in the code values of the information component of the first processing stage in the absence of errors in the second processing stage and service components.
