An approach for parsing MPEG compressed video into shots and sub-shots based only on the macroblock (MB) and motion vector (MV) information is presented. The system follows a two-pass scheme and has a hybrid rule-based/neural structure. A rough scan over the P frames locates the potential shot boundaries and the solution is then refined by a precise scan over the B frames of the respective neighborhoods. The "simpler" boundaries are recognized by the rule-based module, while the decisions for the "complex" ones are refined by the neural part. The latter is also used to distinguish dissolves from object and camera motions and to break the shots into sub-shots. The experiments demonstrate high speed and accuracy in shot detection and their characterization.

The browsing of large image data bases has become a standard problem not only on the web but also in private photo collections. Most browsing techniques build on high dimensional feature spaces that are reduced to one or two dimensions when presented to the user. As this approach does not scale well with the size of the data base we propose to use an interface based on the concept of parallel coordinates. Around the currently selected image, we collect images for each feature dimension, which vary only in this feature coordinate, and present them to the user in a row by row fashion. In this way the user can understand the individual feature dimensions independently. Besides directed image search the interface is well suited to explore classes of images and furthermore to evaluate how intuitive individual feature dimensions are for the user.

We analyse the results of a comprehensive collection of objective quality metrics for high definition compressed visual content. The investigation provides guidelines that allow a reliable JPEG image quality assessment, and therefore the development of perceptual-based image/video coding standards. We show on a comprehensive, recent subjective dataset with visible differences that visual information fidelity, most apparent distortion, and gradient-based objective measures have reached the best agreement with the subjective quality scores, where contrast is preferred according to the luminance and structure changes.

The SPIHT image compression algorithm is modified for application to large images with limited processor memory. The subband decomposition coefficients are partitioned into small tree-preserving spatial blocks which are each independently coded using the SPIHT algorithm. The bitstreams for each spatial block are assembled into a single final bitstream through one of two packetization schemes. The final bitstream can be embedded in fidelity with a small expense in rate, SPIHT encoding and decoding of the spatial blocks can be done in parallel for real-time video compression.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) based methods have significantly improved the performance of image ste-ganalysis compared with conventional ones based on hand-crafted features. However, many existing literatures on computer vision have pointed out that those effective CNN-based methods can be easily fooled by adversarial examples [1]. In this paper, we propose a steganography method based on adversarial example in an iterative manner. The proposed method first starts from an existing embedding cost, such as J-UNIWARD [2] in this work, and then updates the cost iteratively based on adversarial examples derived from a series of steganalytic networks until achieving satisfactory results. We carefully analyze two important factors that would affect the security performance of the proposed framewrork, i.e., the percentage of selected gradients with larger amplitude and the adversarial intensity to modify embedding cost. The experimental results evaluated on three modern steganalytic models, including GFR, SCA-GFR and SRNet, show that the proposed method is very promising to enhance the security performances of JPEG steganography.

In this paper, a novel learning based method is proposed for No-Reference image quality assessment. Instead of examining the exact prior knowledge for the given type of distortion and finding a suitable way to represent it, our method aims to directly get the quality metric by means of learning. At first, some training examples are prepared for both high-quality and low-quality classes; then a binary classifier is built on the training set; finally the quality metric of an un-labeled example is denoted by the extent to which it belongs to these two classes. Different schemes to acquire examples from a given image, to build the binary classifier and to model the quality metric are proposed and investigated. While most existing methods are tailored for some specific distortion type, the proposed method might provide a general solution for No-Reference image quality assessment. Experimental results on JPEG and JPEG2000 compressed images validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In fundamental image recognition processes in particular, striking a fine balance between the amount of information an AI can process from images and its processing speed is crucial. Regular convolutional networks often process information more slowly but perceive more details. In an attempt to address this, DWT has been missing pieces and producing strange patterns lately. In this section, we will present a brand-new Multi-Level Wavelet CNN (MWCNN) model. It strikes a better mix between productivity and seeing a lot. We'll employ an alternative architecture, such as the U-Net, and incorporate the wavelet transform to reduce the amount of information the AI processes. It reduces processing without losing crucial information. Similar to a better dilated filtering technique, our MWCNN can resolve a variety of picture problems. We believe that our approach is quite effective in reducing noise in photographs, improving the clarity of tiny images, and resolving issues with JPEG images.

During the last years, a number of search and retrieval methods for audio and visual content were described in literature. Also cross-modal approaches started to emerge recently. All search methods are based on audiovisual fingerprints, which are extracted from the audiovisual data prior to the actual search. Since the most data are available in the compressed domain, they must be decompressed prior to the feature extraction. This paper describes an audiovisual search engine, which extracts their features directly from the compressed domain, without performing a decoding algorithm. The direct video feature extraction is based on motion vectors and the direct audio feature extraction is based on a polyphase matrix description. The paper depicts an overview of the search engine, which operates cross-modal on audio, and visual features and describes the evaluation of the direct feature extraction methods in detail.

The discrete wavelet transform (DWT), the technology at the heart of the JPEG 2000 image compression system, operates on user-definable tiles of the image, as opposed to fixed-size blocks of the image as does the discrete cosine transform (DCT) used in JPEG. This difference reduces artificial blocking effects but can severely stress the memory system. We examine the interaction of the DWT and the memory hierarchy, modify the structure of the DWT computation and the layout of the image data to improve cache and translation lookaside buffer (TLB) locality, and demonstrate significant performance improvements of the DWT over a baseline implementation. Our optimized DWT implementation exhibits speedups of up to 4/spl times/ over the DWT in a JPEG 2000 reference implementation.

Synthetic image generation methods have recently revolutionized the way in which visual content is created. This opens up creative opportunities but also presents challenges in preventing misinformation and crime. However, these methods leave traces in the Fourier spectrum that are invisible to humans, but can be detected by specialized tools. This paper describes a semi-white-box method for detecting synthetic images by revealing anomalous patterns in the spectral domain. Specifically, we train a mask to enhance the most discriminative frequencies and simultaneously train a reference pattern that resembles the patterns produced by a given generative method. The proposed method produces explainable results with state-of-the-art performances and highlights cues that can be used as forensic evidence. Code is available at https://***/li-yanhao/masksim.
