For radio communication systems, powerful error correction codes are necessary to operate in noisy and fading channel conditions. Iterative forward error correction schemes like turbo codes can achieve near Shannon capacity performance on memory-less channels and also perform well on correlated fading channels. The key to the excellent decoding performance of the turbo coding systems is the BCJR algorithm in conjunction with the iterative processing of soft information. A very popular modulation technique is Differential Phase Shift Key (DPSK) which is not only a simple non-coherent modulation and demodulation technique;it is also a recursive rate one code. Combining DPSK with a single convolutional code structure as an iterative inner outer forward error correction system can provide excellent turbo like performance. Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation with Iterative Demodulation (BICM-ID), another powerful iterative technique achieves near turbo code performance with significantly less mips. We will also introduce and compare with the latter systems yet another novel iterative scheme that utilizes coherent demodulation in conjunction with convolutional codes. This new system can easily be extended to higher order modulations such as 16 and 64 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) while only requiring modest amounts of processing power. Monte Carlo simulation results will be shown for the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels.

Display Field Communication (DFC) is a spectral domain-based display-to-camera (D2C) communication, where a display and a camera function as a transmitter and a receiver, respectively. In this paper, we will provide an outline of the DFC scheme proposed in [1]. First of all, we applied the one-dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) to convert a spatial-domain image to its spectral-domain counterpart. By adapting addition-based data allocation and subtraction-based data retrieval, we were able to achieve computationally efficient and even robust data transmission ability. In addition, we proposed a new power allocation scheme and turbo channel coding scheme during the data embedding process to optimize both image quality and data transmission capability. For practical experiment, a deep learning approach-based object detection scheme, called YOLOv4, is adopted to extract the region from the acquired image. From real-world experiments, we were able to prove the feasibility of our proposed 1D-DCT based DFC scheme [1].

Superposed multicarrier transmission is a potential solution to the spectra overcrowding problem in wireless communications. Powerful FEC coding using a turbo code is one way to overcome the increased noise power due to the interference. Reliable decoding of turbo codes requires accurate knowledge of the channel coefficients and the power of the interference if it is present. This paper presents soft-decision-aided, joint MAP estimation of these parameters, which requires only a small pilot overhead. A novel superposed band detection method is also proposed. The accuracy of the estimators and the effectiveness of the superposed band detection are demonstrated via simulations.

In this paper, a joint detection algorithm is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) channels. In MIMO OFDM channels, if enough cyclic prefix (CP) is used, inter symbol interference is completely cancelled and consequently spatial multiplexing interference (SMI) is the main limiting factor in performance. The proposed algorithm is based on a new soft parallel interference cancellation (SPIC) technique where, in each iteration, a part of SMI proportional to the probability of correctness of estimation in last iteration is cancelled. This probability is calculated approximately assuming the correct estimation for other sub-streams in last iteration. The proposed algorithm approaches the optimum performance in only a few iterations. The proposed algorithm is simulated for 4 states 1/2 turbo code and 8x12, 12x12 and 4x4 MIMO OFDM channels for different values of the E-b/N-0. Bit error rate (BER) and frame error rate (FER) are considered as comparison criteria and it is shown that its performance is good and very close to interference free (lower bound) case. This paper studies the performance of hierarchical-modulation-based image and video transmission in cognitive radio systems with imperfect channel sensing results under constraints on both transmit and interference power. Data intended for transmission is first compressed via source coding techniques and then divided into two priority classes, namely high priority (HP) data and low priority (LP) data, by taking into consideration the unequal importance of bits in the output codestream. After dividing the compressed data into packets of equal size, turbo coding is applied. Finally, the resulting packets are modulated using hierarchical quadrature amplitude modulation (HQAM). In this setting, closed-form bit error probability expressions for HP data and LP data are derived over Nakagami-m fading channels in the presence of sensing errors. Subsequently, the effects of probabilities of detection and false alarm on error rate performance of cognitive transmissions are evaluated. In addition, tradeoffs between the number of retransmissions and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) quality are analyzed numerically. Moreover, performance comparisons of multimedia transmission with conventional QAM and hierarchical QAM are carried out in terms of the received data quality and number of retransmissions.

Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) techniques are used to exploit spatial diversity and to achieve high bit rates required for emerging multimedia applications. Cooperative communication can be used to achieve the diversity gains typical of MIMO without the need for multiple antennas on the consumer units. In this paper, we investigate the use of receiving node (destination) cooperation. We evaluate the performance of destination cooperation in an interference channel (DC-IC). We compare the performance of this system with the baseline 2-user orthogonal channel method. We demonstrate that the 2-user DC-IC outperforms the baseline technique by far. This is due to the cooperative communication. In the cooperative scheme, the receiver nodes in the first time slot, decode the received information from both sources while in the second time slot they cooperate. The scheme provides both diversity and coding gain. Using a typical scenario, we illustrate the efficiency of employing such technique with and without channel coding. However, the proposed technology can be applied to consumer mobile communication devices such as smart phones, tablets, etc ...

This study provides the performance of a turbo-coded rotating polarization wave in Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading wireless communication channels. To test the robustness of the system under changing channel circumstances we compute the Frame Error Rate (FER) over a range of Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) using MATLAB simulations. We show that, in comparison to uncoded systems, the turbo-coded system with rotating polarization wave greatly enhances error correcting capabilities. More precisely, for three polarization states (Np=3) and five polarization states (Np=5), a 2.2 dB improvement in FER is noted in the condition of Rayleigh fading. These results show that using several polarization states lessen the negative consequences of channel impairments. The better error correction performance emphasizes how turbo-coded rotational polarization can be used in contemporary wireless communication systems to provide more dependability and robustness. The capabilities of the system are thoroughly analyzed in this work, which paves the way for further study and useful applications in the area of Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN).

With the Internet of Things taking shape, interference becomes a major issue especially in the sub-GHz bands destined for long range, low power data transfer. Since many power limited devices do not afford sophisticated collision avoidance measures, packet collisions may result in severe performance degradation. We analyze a multiuser decoder intended to let a central station deal with temporally overlapping packets from distributed transmitters. Assuming a state-of-the-art turbo encoding of the information, the multiuser decoder is derived from a factor graph extended to model the temporal packet overlapping. We show that the resulting iterative decoding procedure is capable to jointly decode coinciding packets at error rates close to those of single user decoders.

this paper proposes a work flow model of the LTE Downlink System in order to analyze the performance of the downlink communication and simulate this model to evaluate the key parameters like signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit error rate (BER). It focuses on the implementation of the LTE downlink mainly in the physical layer. In the transmitter, functionalities like turbo coding and OFDM has been realized. In the receiver side, turbo decoding, OFDM decoding functionalities has been developed. The performance parameters and spectrum utilization have been studied for different scenarios like different SNR, different modulation schemes and different number of transmitted bits.

Radio link adaptivity will be a key feature of the air interfaces of future mobile communication systems. This adaptivity includes techniques such as fast scheduling, hybrid ARQ, transmit diversity and adaptive modulation and coding. The performance of adaptive modulation generally suffers from the power inefficiencies of multilevel modulation formats. This is due to the variations in bit reliabilities caused by the bit-mapping onto the signal constellation. This article presents a concept, called constellation rearrangement (CoRe), which improves the multilevel modulation power efficiency by the joint application with transmit diversity schemes. It is shown by a theoretical analysis for 16-QAM that the presented concept can equalize variations in bit reliabilities by employing different mapping rules for the transmission over the diversity branches. This significantly improves the receiver block error rate performance and, hence, the performance of the adaptive modulation and coding. This is proven by simulations at link-level in a multicarrier CDMA system for AWGN and fading channels employing turbo coded transmission.
