This paper presents simulation results demonstrating the performance of OFDM system over vehicular ad-hoc networks, based on IEEE 802.11p specifications, employing turbo coding. The system is focused on vehicle safety applications using ad-hoc communication and networking. IEEE 802.11p defines modifications to IEEE 802.11 to enhance road transport and traffic applications. The standard is based on IEEE 802.11a and intends to support both public safety and licensed private operations over communication channels. The current contribution presents results of system performance evaluation of IEEE 802.11p turbo coding scheme and compares it to the already specified scheme. The turbo coding scheme achieves significant improvement to the performance compared to other techniques. The FEC system model with and without the turbo scheme is later implemented in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) from Xilinx using an Electronic System Level (ESL) methodology.

In this paper, we study the speech user performance of selected parallel interference cancellation (PIC) algorithms in a single-cell high speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) system. To combat intersymbol interference (ISI), single-user chip-level minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) equalizer is used to detect the data users. PIC is applied to suppress the interference from data users to speech users, and RAKE to detect the speech users. As an input to the PIC stage, we may use the hard or soft symbol decisions (HD, SD) from the data users' demodulator or decoder outputs. The latter requires re-encoding of the decoded symbols. This adds to complexity, but increases also the reliability of the interference estimates. Results and analysis are provided for both ideal and MMSE channel estimation (CE). We show that the combination of PIC and RAKE outperforms the simple MMSE equalization in all studied cases. Using re-encoded soft symbol decisions for interference estimate calculation always leads to the best performance. However, in some scenarios the performance loss due to using the soft symbol decisions from the demodulator output is almost negligible.

The LTE standard uses three different modulation schemes to adapt to various channel conditions in order to improve achievable data rates. These modulation schemes are the QPSK, 16-QAM and 64-QAM. This paper presents an overview of a LTE digital communication system Simulink model, designed in order to study the effects of the QPSK, 16-QAM and 64-QAM modulation schemes on the BER performance with an AWGN channel model. Different subsystems within the transmitter and receiver blocks are implemented in Simulink. It is noted that the LTE system uses turbo channel coding and bit-level scrambling to offer reliable and secure services to the users. Depending on the assumed channel condition (clear, medium clear or noisy), the 64-QAM, 16-QAM or QPSK modulation scheme, on the transmitter side;as well as the corresponding demodulation scheme, on the receiver side;are automatically selected. Based on the recovered data bits, the obtained bit error rates are analyzed, compared and discussed.

This paper studies the performance of hierarchical-modulation-based image and video transmission in cognitive radio systems with imperfect channel sensing results under constraints on both transmit and interference power. Data intended for transmission is first compressed via source coding techniques and then divided into two priority classes, namely high priority (HP) data and low priority (LP) data, by taking into consideration the unequal importance of bits in the output codestream. After dividing the compressed data into packets of equal size, turbo coding is applied. Finally, the resulting packets are modulated using hierarchical quadrature amplitude modulation (HQAM). In this setting, closed-form bit error probability expressions for HP data and LP data are derived over Nakagami-m fading channels in the presence of sensing errors. Subsequently, the effects of probabilities of detection and false alarm on error rate performance of cognitive transmissions are evaluated. In addition, tradeoffs between the number of retransmissions and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) quality are analyzed numerically. Moreover, performance comparisons of multimedia transmission with conventional QAM and hierarchical QAM are carried out in terms of the received data quality and number of retransmissions.

Distributed Video coding has become increasingly popular in recent years among the researchers in video coding due to its attractive and promising features. DVC proposed a dramatic structural change to video coding by shifting the majority of complexity conventionally residing in the encoder towards the decoder. Nevertheless, these kinds of architectures have some serious limitations that hinder its practical application. The uses of a feedback channel between the encoder and the decoder requires an interactive decoding procedure which is a limitation for certain applications such as offline processing. On the other hand, the decoder needs an efficient way to estimate the probability of error without assuming the availability of the original video at the decoder. In this paper we investigate a first approximation to solve both problems based on the use of machine learning to extract the knowledge that exits between the residual frame and the number of requests over this feedback channel. Exploiting this correlation gives us a more practical architecture without higher complexity encoders. We apply these concepts to pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv coding and the results show a loss of 0.21 dB in the rate-distortion performance.

In this paper, a joint tracking and decoding algorithm is proposed for MIMO channels. This algorithm is based on a super trellis structure which calculates new estimations of the channel matrix;moreover to calculation of a new metric for each node of the trellis. This algorithm for each branch of the trellis diagram of convolutional encoder, calculate matrix estimation by ML channel tracking algorithm [1]. The proposed algorithm is simulated for 1/2 rate convolutional code and 2x2 MIMO channel for different values of Doppler frequencies and E-b/N-0. Bit error rate (BER) and channel tracking error are considered as comparison criteria and it is shown that its performance is good and channel tracking curves have always negative slope even in blind mode of the operation. The more simulations with more efficient channel models will be presented in full version of the paper.

In recent years, hybrid-automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol has become one of the most popular packet transmission schemes. Hybrid-ARQ aims to combine the advantages of forward error correction codes with the traditional ARQ scheme to increase the reliability and throughput of the network. In this paper, we look at improving upon this performance for block fading channels (e. g., Rayleigh, Rician, etc.) by using feedback information from the destination;in particular, using a turbo code [1] in conjunction with a proposed linear feedback code under additive white Gaussian noise. The scheme is developed for the general case of multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver, and is analyzed for varying amounts of feedback information sent from the destination to the source. Simulations are presented to illustrate the gains in throughput offered by the proposed scheme over the existing ones.

Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (CV2X) has recently piqued the interest of both industry and academia. CV2X extends communication coverage by using the cellular infrastructure as a standard for vehicular communication. CV2X also enables the communication between vehicles and pedestrians, vehicles and the cellular network, along with vehicle to vehicle communication. The CV2X standard's expectations are gradually rising as the number of vehicles, cell phone users, smart devices connected to vehicles, and other factors increase. A more efficient CV2X framework is needed to fulfill these expectations. We focused on the PHY layer of the CV2X standard and proposed a model featuring Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code. Our experimental results suggest that our proposed model is able to improve reliability by reducing the bit error rate compared to the existing PHY layer framework. In addition, our proposed model can increase the throughput up to 1.4 times and 2 times at 10 MHz and 20 MHz channels, respectively.

With the Internet of Things taking shape, interference becomes a major issue especially in the sub-GHz bands destined for long range, low power data transfer. Since many power limited devices do not afford sophisticated collision avoidance measures, packet collisions may result in severe performance degradation. We analyze a multiuser decoder intended to let a central station deal with temporally overlapping packets from distributed transmitters. Assuming a state-of-the-art turbo encoding of the information, the multiuser decoder is derived from a factor graph extended to model the temporal packet overlapping. We show that the resulting iterative decoding procedure is capable to jointly decode coinciding packets at error rates close to those of single user decoders.

The weak strength of GPS signal makes it very vulnerable to jamming. This calls for appropriate modeling and implementation of GPS signal source and jammers that are used to jam GPS signal. The present work describes a simple and efficient way to simulate GPS signal using MATLAB with focus on investigation of GPS signal jamming and devising an anti-jamming technique to counter different jamming scenarios besides Additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The jamming types influencing GPS Signal have been identified and suitable jamming scenarios have been modeled using MATLAB. The effect of each jamming signal type on GPS signal has been quantified by estimation of Bit error rate (BER) for different jamming to signal (J/S) ratio. A background study of different anti-jamming techniques for GPS signal has been carried out and turbo coding has been implemented as a suitable measure to counter the effect of GPS signal jamming.
