The silver salts of fatty acids were thermally decomposed at 250 degrees C in an atmosphere of nitrogen to form silver nanoparticles with a size of 5 nm. The particles suspended in toluene put on a hydrophilic surface of the plasma-polymerized film of osmium tetraoxide and on a water surface to form a two-dimensional array. The nanoparticles repelled each other with a distance of 2.8-3.5 nm depending on the length of the alkyl chain. The surface pressure-area isotherms were measured to confirm the condensation mechanism of two-dimensional arrangement of nano-particles surrounded by alkyl moieties. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. two-dimensional array codes correcting rectangular burst errors are considered. We give a construction and examples of linear two-dimensional array codes correcting rectangular burst errors of size b(1) x b(2) with minimum redundancy r = 2b(1) b(2). We present constructions of cyclic two-dimensional array codes correcting phased and arbitrary rectangular burst errors;their encoding and decoding algorithms are also given. A class of cyclic two-dimensional array codes correcting rectangular burst errors with asymptotically minimal redundancy is described. We construct a class of linear two-dimensional array codes correcting cyclic rectangular b(1) x b(2) burst errors with asymptotic excess redundancy (r) over tilde (C)(b(1), b(2)) = 2b(1) b(2) - 3.

Goos-Hanchen and Imbert-Fedorov shifts in a two-dimensional array of gold nanoparticles

Using an oblique linearly polarized laser beam, Goos-Hanchen (GH) and Imbert-Fedorov (IF) reflection shifts of a two-dimensional array of gold nanoparticles (NPs) on water substrate are investigated within the framework of a theoretical model. The dependences of spatial (Delta) and angular (Theta) shifts on the angle of radiation, the polarity of light, the size, and concentration of particles have been studied in detail. It is shown that a grazing p-wave light yields to the highest negative amount of GH shifts, while a 45-deg polarization that radiates at 45 deg would maximize IF shifts. The deviations are sensitive to the particle size linearly and decrease using larger NPs except in the angular out-of-plane shift Theta(IF), which has a critical point where its sign and trend change. The curves of Delta(GH), Theta(GH), and Theta(IF) for various lattice constant exhibit peaks for a specific arrangement that moves toward smaller values as the particle size increases. On the other hand, Delta(IF) always has an additive behavior. Accurate monitoring of these parameters may serve as a precise method to determine thickness and aggregation of nanostructured films. Estimation of the Thickness Profile of a Human Skull Phantom by Ultrasound Methods Using a two-dimensional array

The paper presents the results of evaluating the thickness profile of a skull phantom using a two-dimensional ultrasound array consisting of piezoelectric elements with a center frequency of 2.1 MHz. two pulse-echo ultrasound methods were used in the experiment: the A-mode elementwise measurements and scanning with a focused probing beam created by the entire array using delay-and-sum (DAS) beamforming. The obtained thickness profiles are compared with the reference thickness profile obtained using X-ray computed tomography. It was shown that ultrasound DAS beamforming with a focused probing beam makes it technically possible to estimate the thickness profile of the skull phantom.

Active bearing estimation from a mobile two-dimensional array of sensors

A new approach for active-sonar target detection and bearing estimation from a mobile two-dimensional array of sensors operating in a predominantly noisy environment is presented. Sensor-level adaptive noise cancellation featuring an unconventional method for reference-noise estimation is the key preprocessing step in the proposed approach. A signal-subspace algorithm resulting from two-stage optimisation based on a generalised eigendecomposition of the signal plus (residual) noise covariance matrix is employed to estimate the bearing of the detected target. Simulation results conclusively demonstrate that the proposed scheme is capable of performing target detection and the subsequent two-dimensional bearing estimation with a high degree of reliability at signal-to-noise power ratios as low as -70 and -40 dB, respectively.

Switching properties of a regular two-dimensional array of small uniaxial particles

Switching properties of a regular square lattice of 40x40x3 mu m(3) highly uniaxial, single domain magnetic garnet pixels have been measured magnetooptically. ''Up'' and ''down'' switching fields, coercivities and interaction fields were measured on an assembly of hundreds of particles, Statistical analysis of the data shows the relationship between major loop parameters and mean values of the distributions, Local demagnetizing tensor elements were calculated for the non-ellipsoidal geometry and the interaction fields from different neighbors were computed. The importance of the effect of the geometry, shape and size of particles on the switching properties is demonstrated, The agreement with experimental values is very good. The simplicity of this model system iu attractive for studying artificially structured 2-D arrays of small particles.

The mixture of beta-sheet peptide-PEG diblock copolymer and beta-sheet peptide spread at air/water interface formed a two-dimensional array of the fibrous objects. The fibrous objects constructed by intermolecular hydrogen bonding of beta-sheet peptides were regulated by compressing of the monolayer. When the spread peptide moieties fully located on the water surface, the distance between the fibers was efficiently modulated by the fraction of PEG segments.

Annexins are soluble cytosolic proteins that bind to cell membranes. Annexin A5 self-assembles into a two-dimensional (2D) array and prevents cell rupture by attaching to damaged membranes. However, this process is not fully understood at the molecular level. In this study, we determined the crystal structures of annexin A5 with and without calcium (Ca2+) and confirmed the Ca2+-dependent outward motion of a tryptophan residue. Strikingly, the two structures exhibited the same crystal packing and 2D arrangement into a p3 lattice, which agrees well with the results of low-resolution structural imaging. High-resolution structures indicated that a three-fold interaction near the tryptophan residue is important for mediating the formation of the p3 lattice. A hypothesis on the promotion of p3 lattice formation by phosphatidyl serine (PS) is also suggested. This study provides molecular insight into how annexins modulate the physical properties of cell membranes as a function of Ca2+ concentration and the phospholipid composition of the membrane.

A two-dimensional array for simultaneous sequencing of N- and O-glycans and their glycoforms on specific glycosylation sites

Glycans play major roles in living organisms. Thus, essential information is required on diverse glycans, their location, and moieties in proteins, as well as for technology in a high-throughput manner, for improving functional glycomics. In the present study, we describe a new approach involving a 2-D array, which has the potential to fulfill both requirements. The first dimension of the array is composed of various lectins immobilized to a MALDI plate. The second dimension consists of initial proteolysis, then sequential exoglycosidase digestion using highly specific enzymes. The products of such digestions are peptide/glycopeptide mixtures conjugating different glycan fragments from which the exoglycosidase has removed specific terminal residues. Consequently, a series of spectra are obtained when lectin-attached products are analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. By using well-known glycoproteins and NKp46D2-Ig, a recombinant fusion natural killer receptor with unknown glycans produced in CHO cells, we proved the usefulness of the method, demonstrating rapid and simultaneous determination of Nand O-glycan sequences, their glycan moieties, and subtypes on each of the determined glycosylation sites. This strategy provides a tool that can rapidly explore glycan structures and might contribute to a better understanding of process- and disease-related glycoproteins.

Self-organization of a two-dimensional array of gold nanodots encapsulated by alkanethiol

We have studied a fabrication strategy for self-organization of a two-dimensional array of alkanethiol-encapsulated gold nanodots. The fabrication process has two steps: (1) preparation of alkanethiol-encapsulated gold particles from gold colloidal panicles;(2) self-organization of an ordered close-packed array of gold nanodots encapsulated by alkanethiol on a substrate. By this method, we succeeded in fabricating a wide range of ordered close-packed monolayers of gold nanodots. The simplicity, Flexibility, and practicality of this method makes it a prospective procedure for developing future nanoelectronic devices.
