Compact, two-element array with high broadside directivity

A combination of two high directivity, electrically small, slot-modified conducting disc-augmented Egyptian axe dipole (EAD) antennas is investigated to achieve interesting broadside radiation properties, including a high broadside directivity and front-to-back ratio. Their array arrangement is guided by a simple two-element dipole model. The parasitic conducting disc associated with each EAD antenna is modified only slightly from their original single-element dimensions to preserve nearly complete matching to their sources, to accommodate the coupling between the two elements and to maximise the array pattern characteristics. Parameter studies lead to a final design, whose simulation results demonstrate that the two-element array has outstanding performance characteristics, including a 9.98 dB broadside directivity, an 88.19% radiation efficiency, a 20.03 dB front-to-back-ratio, a -22.42 dB mutual coupling level, more than a 30 dB level of polarisation purity, and good impedance matching to their respective 50 Omega sources, despite each antenna being electrically small, that is, ka < 1, and the distance between the centre of each element being only slightly larger than a half wavelength.

Broadband two-element array With Hybrid Decoupling Structures for Multimode Mobile Terminals

A two-element array with high isolation is presented for multimode mobile terminals. The antenna array is composed of two symmetrical antennas and a novel decoupling structure. The antenna element covers the LTE700/GSM900/GSM1900/UMTS/LTE2300/2500 operations. The decoupling structure is embedded between the two broadband antennas, which is a hybrid structure and composed of lumped elements (capacitors) and distributed elements (three pairs of U-shaped slots). By loading lumped capacitors at the edges of the slots, the lengths of the slots are decreased efficiently. By embedding three pairs of U-shaped slots, broadband decoupling is achieved. A prototype of the proposed antenna array was fabricated and tested. The antenna covers the lower bands (704-787 MHz and 880-960 MHz) and the upper bands (1800-2690 MHz) with the definition of 3.5:1 VSWR (5 dB return loss). The measured isolation between the two antennas is better than 11 dB, and the efficiencies at the lower bands and the upper bands are better than 30% and 40%, respectively. The proposed antenna array is easy to find applications in a thin or slim mobile phone which meets the current fashion taste.

A practical technique for optimum matching of two-element antenna arrays

A fast and effective method for the matching of two-element symmetric antenna arrays is presented. The full geometry is subdivided into two half-space problems with the help of ail even- and odd-mode (EOM) analysis scheme. An interpretation based on the EOM representation is made for any radiation pattern mode that is constructed by arbitrarily exciting the antenna ports. Also, a relationship between the radiation efficiency for the full geometry and the even- and odd-mode S-parameters is derived. A unique technique for matching the two-element antenna arrays is is developed by exploiting the EOM representation. Numerical examples that illustrate the effectiveness of our matching technique for different radiation pattern modes are provided. (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Inc.

Gain-enhanced EH₁-mode microstrip leaky-wave antenna with periodical loading of shorting pins

A gain-enhanced EH1-mode microstrip leaky-wave antenna (MLWA) with periodical loading of shorting pins to improve the radiation gain is proposed. Owing to the equivalent shunt inductive effect of the periodically installed shorting pins, the cut-off frequency of the proposed pin-loaded EH1-mode microstrip line (MSL) is effectively tuned up;in other words, the lateral electric dimension of the proposed MLWA is effectively enlarged. Therefore, the distance of a pair of in-phase equivalent magnetic-current line sources in two sides of the MSL is widened, resulting to increase the radiation gain of the proposed MLWA. For the sake of theoretical explanation, an analytical model is built up for analysis. Then, numerical investigation is executed to reveal the effect of pins position on the tuning ratio of both the EH1-mode cut-off frequencies and strip widths. After extensive analysis, a pin-loaded EH1-mode MLWA under width tuning ratio of 1.78 and periodicity of 10.0mm is designed, fabricated, and tested. Simulated and measured results both demonstrate that the radiation gain could be successfully raised up from 10.1dBi (conventional EH1-mode MLWA) to 13.1dBi (the proposed pin-loaded one) at the same operating frequency of 4.0GHz.

Integration of antennas with sun-tracking solar panels

A low-cost solution for antennas integrated into solar cells, allowing their implementation in solar tracking installations is proposed. The proposed passive device autonomously adjusts the phase shift of a two-element array proportional to the panel rotation. Consequently, the main beam is steered to compensate for panel rotation and maintain a radio link. The proposed device operates for a rotation of +/- 45 degrees with an amplitude variation of <= 0.4 dB at 2.51 GHz.

Wideband cavity backed slot antenna for automotive monopulse radars

A wideband cavity backed slot antenna is designed for automotive-borne monopulse radar applications. A rectangular slot is used to realise broad bandwidth;the slot is backed by a cavity, and the vertical walls of the cavity are implemented by discrete vias;and the slot is fed by a microstrip line. The proposed antenna is compact, robust, fully planar and easy to integrate. A two-element array is fabricated and tested. Measured input impedance is matched to 50 V within band [2.61 GHz, 3.44 GHz] (27.5% bandwidth);and monopulse beam-scanning is successfully demonstrated.

Radiation Enhanced Vivaldi Antenna With Double-Antipodal Structure

This letter presents a novel Vivaldi antenna that can be used to the microwave measurement because of the character of near-field linear polarization plane-like waves. Compared to previous double-slot Vivaldi antenna with the same dimension, the proposed antenna's gain, standing-wave ratio, and radiation characteristics are both improved greatly above 12 GHz by the inclusion of the double-antipodal structure, corrugated edges, and a feature called N"director." Furthermore, the double-antipodal structure introduces a coupled E-field;this reduces total cross-polarization level of the antenna. The proposed antenna is measured, and results show that it has a 4.7- to 20-GHz impedance bandwidth and maintains 20-dB copolarization-to-cross-polarization ratio below 10 GHz and 15 dB below 16 GHz, and its gain increases from 10.3 to 14.8 dBi without a significant decline at high frequencies. Symmetrical feed network also results in better symmetry of the beam, especially in H-plane.
