A two-stage stochastic programming model for rail-truck intermodal network design with uncertain customer demand

With the globalization of supply chains, intermodal operations have become a key player in transportation. In real life, the consumer's demands are often uncertain. The recent literature is rich of papers that either emphasizes on uncertain customer demands or intermodal transportation planning. In this paper, we combine these two fields in order to identify new potentials for saving cost and improving the efficiency of intermodal logistics network. A two stage stochastic programming model was proposed to decide the terminal location and transportation routes under uncertain customer demands. And the AP data set is used to test the presented model. The result is compared with the traditional counterparts, which shows superiority in solution quantity under uncertain environment.

A stochastic programming model for free-floating shared bike redistribution considering bike gathering

We study a stochastic free-floating shared bike redistribution problem, which first gathers bikes randomly scattered around the hotspots of a city and then transships the gathered bikes among the hotspots to achieve a better supply-demand balance. In the literature, the bike gathering operation and the associated stochasticity, although significant for shared bike redistribution practice, are rarely considered. To fill the gap, we propose a two -stage stochastic programming model that explicitly incorporates the bike -gathering cost with two formulations. In the planning stage, the deployment of gathering sites and the allocation of gathering staff are determined. In the operation stage, the gathering, transshipment and replenishment of shared bikes are optimized based on the decisions of the planning stage and the realization of the uncertain supply and demand of free-floating shared bikes in space. With a case study based on real data from the Mobike company in Beijing, China, we illustrate the real -world applications of our proposed model, highlight the importance of considering the cost of bike gathering when planning free-floating shared bike redistribution, and gain managerial insights for better field practices.

Revealing risk mitigation strategies for supply chain resilience in aquaculture industry through a methodology equipped with lean tools and stochastic programming

With a notable focus on seafood, especially salmon, which is crucial for global food security, substantial investments have fueled the growth of Turkish salmon farming in the Black Sea region. Despite being profitable, the industry faces challenges, including supply chain vulnerabilities to internal and external disruptions, leading to a ripple effect. One of the most significant challenges in the sector is fish escapes, which directly impact lead time and customer satisfaction levels. By specifically focusing on undercurrent and storm factors, this study proposes a comprehensive methodology, adopting a continuous improvement cycle to manage this challenge. This methodology involves a novel scenario-based two-stage stochastic programming model with the objective of minimizing the expected overall cost. The model is formulated for the transportation problem, addressing fish escapes within the aquaculture industry to establish a resilient supply chain structure. It also explores the comprehensiveness of lean implementation associated with various reliability levels, representing the decisionmaker's risk propensity. Moreover, a design of experiment (DoE) setting is established to scrutinize the impact of controlled factors and their interactions on the outcomes. After conducting computational analysis, considering the impact of factors, lean maturity levels, and the comprehensiveness of lean implementation on the results, valuable managerial insights are provided within the context of risk mitigation strategies. The findings indicate that in the event of severe disruptions, significant improvements in risk mitigation can be achieved through the continuous improvement-based methodology, primarily driven by lean tools.

This paper focuses on vertically integrated pig companies based on multi-farm systems. The aim is to address tactical decisions to plan production, increase flexibility, improve coordination and overall pig production under the uncertainty associated with future selling price. Decisions to purchase additional piglets and/or rent farms to adapt system capacity were considered. We propose a two-stage stochastic programming model with selling price as a stochastic parameter under a limited time horizon and a case study to illustrate their use. The model maximizes the net revenue of the system by considering a steady piglet production on sow farms and the corresponding animal flow according to growth stage throughout different farms such as breeding, rearing and fattening farms. All-in-all-out management and marketing time window to sell pigs to the abattoir were modeled on fattening farms. The stochastic solution for the case study provides an optimal first stage production plan regarding the purchase of 1016 piglets/week in addition to the 775 already produced beside the renting of rearing and fattening farms taking into account the different scenarios may happen in the future. The model is capable of identifying inefficiencies or bottlenecks in the system. We discuss the value of the stochastic solution of k(sic)1683 compared to the deterministic solution, and concluding the valuable incorporation of uncertainty.

This paper formulates a two-stage stochastic programming model for energy and reserve joint dispatch considering wind power uncertainty and the participation of incentive-based demand response (IBDR). The model consists two stages, the first stage is to determine the day-ahead energy dispatch and the reserve capacity need, the second stage is to determine the deployment of reserves to accommodate the realisation of wind power uncertainty in real time. The IBDR program and the thermal power units provide reserve together to cope with the uncertainty of wind power. The IBDR model considers the maximum response times of a DR agent during a day to assure the reliability of using electricity for end users. To reduce the computation burden caused by wind power scenarios, the inactive constraints identification method is utilised to eliminate redundant transmission line constraints before solving the original model. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed model and the solving method are tested on the modified IEEE 118-bus test system with 50 DR agents.

This paper addresses a discontinuous multi-activity tour scheduling problem under demand uncertainty and when employees have identical skills. The problem is formulated as a two-stage stochastic programming model, where first-stage decisions correspond to the assignment of employees to weekly tours, while second-stage decisions are related to the allocation of work activities and breaks to daily shifts. A multi-cut L-shaped method is presented as a solution approach. Computational results on real-based and randomly generated instances show that the use of the stochastic model helps to reduce understaffing and overstaffing costs, when compared with the expected-value problem solutions. Analysis of optimal BOT highway capacity and economic toll adjustment provisions under traffic demand uncertainty

For planning a build-operate-transfer (BOT) highway, a rigid contract between a government and private firms with fixed capacity and economic toll adjustment (ETA) provisions to traffic demand variations is practically adopted to cope with the risk caused by uncertain traffic demand. This study develops a two-stage stochastic programming model to determine its optimal highway capacity and ETA strategy, and deeply analyze some insightful properties of this type of contract. Finally, it is compared with two other "very rigid" single-stage BOT contracts with the fixed toll and capacity provisions. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In highly polluted regions, it might be necessary to operate power plants enforcing appropriate emission limits to help ensuring air quality. If the air quality is low and pollutants are difficult to diffuse, few additional emissions should be allowed to avoid further deteriorating the air quality. Wind power helps reducing pollution levels as it substitutes polluting thermal production. However, wind and air pollution are generally anti-correlated. Storage can be used to shift wind power production from hours when higher pollution levels are allowed to hours when lower pollution levels are allowed to help meeting emission constraints at critical hours. Storage availability also achieves a comparatively lower production cost for the system as a whole. To represent the stochastic nature of wind power production and weather-dependent emission limits, the authors propose a two-stage stochastic programming model to analyse the trade-off emission versus cost in an electric energy system with storage facilities. The first stage represents the day-ahead scheduling, while the second one represents the real-time operation under different scenarios. The authors analyse the impact of emission limits and/or storage on generation scheduling by comparing different models using an illustrative example and a case study based on the IEEE 118-node system.

A two-stage stochastic optimization model for the transfer activity choice in metro networks

This research focuses on finding the best transfer schemes in metro networks. Using sample-based time-invariant link travel times to capture the uncertainty of a realistic network, a two-stage stochastic integer programming model with the minimized expected travel time and penalty value incurred by transfer activities is formulated. The first stage aims to find a sequence of potential transfer nodes (stations) that can compose a feasible path from origins to destinations in the transfer activity network, and the second stage provides the least time paths passing by the generated transfer stations in the first stage for evaluating the given transfer schemes and then outputs the best routing information. To solve our proposed model, an efficient hybrid algorithm, in which the label correcting algorithm is embedded into a branch and bound searching framework, is presented to find the optimal solutions of the considered problem. Finally, the numerical experiments are implemented in different scales of metro networks. The computational results demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed approaches even for the large-scale Beijing metro network. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Carrying capacity procurement of rail and shipping services for automobile delivery with uncertain demand

The determination of the optimal carrying capacity procurement of rail and shipping services in the automobile intermodal network with unique characteristics is essential to save automobile delivery cost. In this research we develop a two-stage stochastic programming model for the tactical-level decision problem arising in the special automobile intermodal network. Furthermore, we improve the sample average approximation algorithmic procedure to solve the model. We apply the model and solution method to a case study associated with the Shanghai Automobile Industry Corporation.
