As the Internet of Things becomes commonplace, modern software must encompass the sensors, actuators and controllers that make up these physical computers. But can non-experts program such systems? Can such software development be undertaken by anyone, especially programmers who are learning or who are not aiming to be technical experts? We describe the motivation and principles behind Microsoft MakeCode and CODAL, two symbiotic frameworks which have many innovative engineering features for physical computing. Together, these two technologies highlight a new approach to software development for embedded computing devices which provides accessible programming languages and environments that reduce the complexity of programming embedded devices without compromising the flexibility or performance of the resulting software.

The inflexible nature of traditional computer networks has led to tightly-integrated systems that are inherently difficult to manage and secure. To remedy this, new designs have moved low-level network control from hardware into software creating software-defined networks (SDN) that are centrally controlled, programmable, and dynamic. However, augmenting an existing network with these enhancements can be expensive and complex with unpredictable results. This research investigates solutions to these problems through hardware and software. For hardware, it is hypothesized that an add-on device, or "shim" could be used to make a traditional switch behave as an OpenFlow SDN switch while maintaining reasonable performance. A cost-saving design is proposed to enable experimentation on existing networks and the ability to quantify benefits of upgrading before investing. A design prototype is implemented, tested, and found to cause approximately 1.5% reduction in throughput for one flow and less than double increase in latency, showing that such a solution may be feasible for gaining insight into the value of network upgrades before committing to the costs. For software, it is hypothesized that a new design built on event-loop and reactive programming may yield a controller that is both higher-performing than existing research-based controllers and easier to program. The contribution is in three blocks that build on each other: a schema, a library, and a framework. The schema provides a means to standardize OpenFlow application programming in any language, an important step in creating a standardized northbound interface and in making network applications portable between platforms. The library node-openflow extends high- performance message encoding and decoding to the Node. js platform. Diagrams are used in multiple fields as an aid in the design process. These diagrams can be automatically generated or manually drawn. In manually drawn diagrams, the editor software can assist the drawing process by offering automatic routing of connectors to speed up the drawing process. In automatically generated diagrams automatic routing is a must. We go through an orthogonal connector routing algorithm and compare its design decisions to other alternatives. A web based prototype of the algorithm was implemented in typescript and evaluated. It was considered to produce good quality routes and to be efficient enough for interactive editing of diagrams.

Angular is the successor of the extremely popular Angular. js framework. While it is based on many of the same concepts, it still is a complete rewrite of Angular. js. Angular has an extremely interesting approach to change detection which differs quite a lot from what other libraries and frameworks have implemented. While extremely performant already by default, it can still be fine-tuned by the developer. The target of this thesis was to introduce the optimization possibility related to the usage of immutable data structures and the OnPush change detection strategy and to demon- strate the performance gain with a reference application. The reference application built is a complete Angular application. It demonstrates a change detection heavy use case where the original version is suffering from a minor performance problem. It was proven that the usage of immutable data structures with the OnPush change detec- tion strategy can have a great positive impact on the performance of an Angular applica- tion. The actual gain is dependent on the architecture of the application. In the case of the reference application the gain was 1.21648-fold in frames per seconds compared to un- optimized version.

This article describes development of the remote neurorehabilitation system architecture, consisting of four components: the SYMPATHOCOR-01 device, the mobile applications for a physician and for a patient, and the server component. The SYMPATHOCOR-01 device is used to perform rehabilitation procedures of patient. The mobile application for a physician is used to plan, to view and to correct patient treatment. The mobile application for a patient is used to control the SYMPATHOCOR-01 device and, to instruct patient during treatment. The server component is used to perform the database operations and to interact with mobile applications over the Internet. The remote neurorehabilitation system allows one to perform treatment process partially at home with remote physician control over the Internet.

This article discusses development of the cross platform mobile application for medical devices control purposes using the Ionic framework. The SYMPATHOCOR-01 was used as an example of controlled medical device. The developed application helps to reduce the burden on physicians, performing actions automatically. The application allows to manage the patient's treatment process, automatically fills the patient's treatment history, stores patient data in an embedded database. Using Ionic framework with a cross-platform approach, it is possible to significantly reduce the financial costs of application development and make application compatible with 98% of mobile devices users.

JavaScript is growing explosively and is now used in large mature projects even outside the web domain. JavaScript is also a dynamically typed language for which static type systems, notably Facebook's Flow and Microsoft's typescript, have been written. What benefits do these static type systems provide? Leveraging JavaScript project histories, we select a fixed bug and check out the code just prior to the fix. We manually add type annotations to the buggy code and test whether Flow and typescript report an error on the buggy code, thereby possibly prompting a developer to fix the bug before its public release. We then report the proportion of bugs on which these type systems reported an error. Evaluating static type systems against public bugs, which have survived testing and review, is conservative: it understates their effectiveness at detecting bugs during private development, not to mention their other benefits such as facilitating code search/completion and serving as documentation. Despite this uneven playing field, our central finding is that both static type systems find an important percentage of public bugs: both Flow 0.30 and typescript 2.0 successfully detect 15%!
