This paper presents a differential and constant-beamwidth (CB) beamforming approach, which is based on Kronecker-product (KP) beamforming with uniform rectangular arrays (URAs). We decompose a global rectangular beamformer into a KP of two sub-beamformers: a constant-beamwidth beamformer along the y-axis and a super-directive (SD) beamformer along the x-axis. We propose two design methods to derive global rectangular beamformers whose either white noise gain (WNG) or directivity factor (DF) may be set by design. We show that the proposed rectangular beamformers exhibit improved directivity with respect to the linear CB beamformer, particularly in high frequencies, and improved robustness to spatially white noise with respect to the linear SD beamformer. Finally, the proposed rectangular beamformers exhibit the constant-beamwidth property, with an inherent tradeoff between the constant-beamwidth threshold frequency and the array directivity, which is tuned by the number of microphones along each axis.

In this paper, a novel two-dimensional (2D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm for the mixed circular and strictly noncircular sources is proposed. A general array model with a mixture of signals is firstly built based on uniform rectangular arrays (URAs), and then, the approach, which uses the rank-reduction-based ROOT-MUSIC, can solve 2D DOA estimation problem. Besides, the theoretical error of the proposed algorithm, a criterion of the performance for evaluation, is analyzed by the first-order Taylor expression using second-order statistics. As verified by the simulation results, a better DOA estimation performance and a lower computational complexity are achieved by the proposed algorithm than the existing methods resorting to the noncircularity of the incoming signals.

This paper proposes an improved spatial differencing (ISD) scheme for two-dimensional direction of arrival (2-D DOA) estimation of coherent signals with uniform rectangular arrays (URAs). We first divide the URA into a number of row rectangular subarrays. Then, by extracting all the data information of each subarray, we only perform difference-operation on the auto-correlations, while the cross-correlations are kept unchanged. Using the reconstructed submatrices, both the forward only ISD (FO-ISD) and forward backward ISD (FB-ISD) methods are developed under the proposed scheme. Compared with the existing spatial smoothing techniques, the proposed scheme can use more data information of the sample covariance matrix and also suppress the effect of additive noise more effectively. Simulation results show that both FO-ISD and FB-ISD can improve the estimation performance largely as compared to the others, in white or colored noise conditions.

Improving estimation performance of compressive sensing-based multiple-input multiple-output radar using electronic beamsteering

Two-dimensional direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation in azimuth and elevation via radar systems equipped with uniform rectangular arrays (URAs) will play an important role in various application areas-most distinctively in future urban air mobility settings with unmanned aerial vehicles. A key factor is the fast and reliable provision of target detections in terms of range and DoA for safe autonomous operation of the vehicle using on-board antenna arrays with compact installation size. The authors present a technique for improving the performance of DoA estimation using compressive sensing in conjunction with multiple-input multiple-output arrays with electronically steered beams in the transmit direction. The simulation study investigates the impact of different design considerations on radar signal processing performance. An optimisation of a radar system using electronic beamsteering in the transmit domain is presented numerically. Based on the architecture of the URAs used, performance and detection accuracy can be improved. The authors deal with direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation of obstacles in the field-of-view (FoV) using compressive sensing (CS) and compares multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar signal processing with a codebook-based electronic beamsteering approach for compact radar sensors in future urban air mobility. Separable transmit beampattern design for MIMO radars with planar colocated antennas

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar transmit beampattem design for one-dimensional arrays has been widely studied in literatures. In this paper, transmit beampattern design is considered for two-dimensional (2D) arrays. As the size of the array is increased, the computational complexity and time for pattern optimization are increased drastically. To overcome these problems, we introduced the conditions upon which the 2D beampattern design for uniform rectangular arrays (URA) can be achieved via the product of two perpendicular transmit beampattems of uniform linear arrays (ULA). The transmit beampattem design is accomplished under special characteristics such as minimum integrated sidelobe level or special 3 dB beamwidth in azimuth and elevation with much lower computation time.

Antenna Array Topologies for mmWave Massive MIMO Systems: Spectral Efficiency Analysis

This article investigates the achievable spectral efficiency (SE) of millimeter wave massive multiple-input multiple-output systems with three different array topologies deployed at the base station (BS), namely uniform rectangular array (URA), uniform linear array (ULA) or uniform circular array (UCA). To be practical, both small scale fading and large scale path loss, and shadowing effects are considered in the analysis. A 3D channel model taking both the azimuth and elevation domains into account is adopted for the analysis of the URA and UCA topologies. Considering randomly distributed users in the cell, we firstly deduce the distribution functions of the distances between the users and the BS, and the azimuth and elevation angles of departure, respectively. Based on the derived probability distribution, tight approximations on the achievable SE with maximum ration transmission under the three antenna array topologies are derived. Analytical results show that under all the three topologies, the total achievable SE increases with the number of BS antennas, but decreases with the radius of cell and decay exponent. Moreover, it converges to a saturated value in the high SNR regime and a large inter-element spacing. It is also found that the UCA configuration has a superior achievable SE than the URA and ULA cases, and thus is the best choice for mmWave massive MIMO systems in terms of the achievable SE.

In this letter, a two-dimensional (2-D) DOA estimation method based on rank reduction (RARE) for hybrid circular and noncircular signals is proposed. In the case of coexistence of circular and noncircular signals, the method first transforms the uniform rectangular arrays to a virtual uniform linear array. Multiple 2-D DOAs are then decoupled into several 1-D DOAs using RARE method. Compared with the existing MUSIC-like methods, the proposed method utilizes noncircularity feature to improve angle estimation performance. Theoretical analysis and simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, which has superior estimation performance than the existing methods in terms of low signal-to-noise ratio.

This paper proposes the use of a Gaussian window on the array factor as an interference mitigation method, aiming to avoid the computational complexity of the MVDR algorithm at the cost of a slight performance reduction. We show that by optimizing the parameters of the Gaussian window, it is possible to effectively mitigate the interfering signal if it is received within a certain angular range from the desired signal, while being still effective beyond that range. Finally, we show that the effectiveness of this approach is maintained across the full frequency reception range of the Ka-band, and confirm its validity using 8 x 8 and 16 x 16 array sizes.

The changes of paradigm from "connected things" to "connected intelligence" is anticipated to be made possible by sixth-generation wireless systems, which increases the demand for extremely effective intelligent algorithms. When used in realistic sixth-generation applications, traditional optimization-based techniques typically suffer from low performance and high computing costs. In addition to computational time, interference is another non-negligible element that limits these applications' performance. To cope with high time-consuming issues and interferences, in this paper, a convex optimization-based approach to synthesize antenna array patterns with controlled sidelobe levels will be proposed. In this approach, interferences are suppressed by reducing sidelobe levels while maintaining the main lobe in the desired direction. The achieved performances of the proposed approach are demonstrated and compared to metaheuristics-based approaches through numerical simulations.

Three types of antenna arrays such as uniform linear, uniform rectangular arrays and uniform cube arrays are used in the transmitter and their corresponding channel capacity on several paths in the indoor environment are calculated. Numerical results show that uniform linear arrays is better than that for uniform rectangular arrays and uniform cube arrays system with and without interference.
