Low intensity conflicts (LIC) become crucial in military operations. They are situations where contending groups are involved in a confrontation below the level of conventional war. To protect minorities and maintain or restore an acceptable level of peace a military force can be employed. Such a system is principally characterised by the importance of the interactions between and within factions. Salient properties of these interactions are their asymmetry, their effects at different scales and their dynamic nature. The multi-agent paradigm and the dynamic structure system are particularly suitable ways to represent a system with such characteristics. This paper proposes a Discrete EVents Specification (DEVS) of autonomous agents and uses a related dynamic hierarchical structure approach to enable more realistic training of military personnel and scenario analysis.

Modeling and simulation becomes crucial in analyzing dynamic system behavior. Many formalisms and methods are introduced in order to improve this process. The effort is twofold; a) reach more realistic models and results, b) obtain "simplified, flexible" models. Efforts are conducted to adapt formalisms to several domains and features. In our work, we are interested in the structure variability especially in DEVS modeling formalism. structure variability allows models to be adapted to different situations along simulation. We proposed a dynamic hierarchical structure modeling approach and the corresponding algorithm based on the abstract simulator. This paper presents an implementation in an M&S environment.
