In this work, we present low-complexity variable forgetting factor (VFF) techniques for diffusion recursive least squares (DRLS) algorithms. Particularly, we propose low-complexity VFF-DRLS algorithms for distributed parameter and spectrum estimation in sensor networks. For the proposed algorithms, they can adjust the forgetting factor automatically according to the posteriori error signal. We develop detailed analyses in terms of mean and mean square performance for the proposed algorithms and derive mathematical expressions for the mean square deviation (MSD) and the excess mean square error (EMSE). The simulation results show that the proposed low-complexity VFF-DRLS algorithms achieve superior performance to the existing DRLS algorithm with fixed forgetting factor when applied to scenarios of distributed parameter and spectrum estimation. Besides, the simulation results also demonstrate a good match for our proposed analytical expressions.

This paper proposes an implementation of distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) for the three-phase distribution system. The functions of DSTATCOM are harmonics elimination, compensation of reactive power, and load balancing in power factor correction and voltage regulation modes. A variable forgetting factor recursive least square (VFFRLS)-based control algorithm is proposed for effective operation of DSTATCOM to estimate weighted values of active and reactive power components of load current. The proposed control algorithm is fast in convergence and has quick response. A prototype of DSTATCOM is developed in the laboratory using a digital signal processor (dSPACE 1104) and voltage-source converter and tested for various operating conditions under nonlinear load. The performance of DSTATCOM is found satisfactory in mitigating various power-quality problems with the VFFRLS-based control algorithm.

A new nonlinear RLS adaptive algorithm with a variable forgetting factor is introduced. The autocorrelations of nonzero lags, which is insensitive to additive noise, is used to control the forgetting factor of the nonlinear RLS. This scheme provides an algorithm with good tracking capability and small model error in correlated impulsive noise.

This paper presents the nonresonant ultrasonic motor (SPIDER)-driven precision stage control based on an adaptive identification method with a variable forgetting factor (VFF). SPIDER-driven stage has a strong non-linearity due to the frictional drive mechanism. Focusing on the VFF, dynamical change of frictional property is detected. Therefore, fast and precise friction compensation can be performed. based on the VFF. The validity of both the identification and compensation methods is verified through experiments.

To diagnose the fault in the pitch actuator of wind turbines, a fault diagnosis method is proposed in this paper, which is based on the variable forgetting factor recursive least-squares(VFF-RLS) algorithm. According to the characteristic that the system parameters are changed by faults, the VFF-RLS system identification algorithm is adopted to estimate the changing parameters. The fault diagnosis problem is transformed into a parameter estimation issue. Then the time-varying natural frequency and damping ratio of pitch actuators are estimated based on the discrete model. The convergence rate and identification accuracy of the identification algorithm can be guaranteed by adjusting the forgetting factor automatically. The simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, a new robust adaptive FIR filter algorithm with variable forgetting factor for time-varying parameters estimation in the presence of impulsive noise is discussed. The proposed algorithm is based on the robust recursive least square and extended prediction error variable forgetting factor adaptation algorithms. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated in a system identification simulation using a FIR filter application.

Recursive least square (RLS) algorithms are considered as a kind of accurate parameter identification method for lithium-ion batteries. However, traditional RLS algorithms usually employ a fixed forgetting factor, which does not have adequate robustness when the algorithm has interfered. In order to solve this problem, a novel variable forgetting factor method is put forward in this paper. Comparing with traditional variable forgetting factor methods, it has higher stability and sensitivity by using some mathematic improvements. The improvements in the robustness of recursive least square with a variable forgetting factor (VFF-RLS) algorithm is verified in this paper. A Thevenin model which is frequently-used in battery management system is employed in the verification. A data loss battery working condition is designed to simulate the interference to the algorithm. A simulation platform is established in MATLAB/Simulink software, and the data used in the verification is obtained by battery experiments. The analysis indicated that the novel VFF-RLS algorithm has better robustness and convergence ability, and has an acceptable identification accuracy.

On-line identification and damage detection in non-linear structural systems using a variable forgetting factor approach

This paper presents an adaptive on-line identification algorithm based on a newly defined variable forgetting factor approach. At each time step, the proposed methodology, a recursive least-square (Kalman filter) based algorithm, upgrades the adaptation gain matrix using an adaptive forgetting factor that is expressed as the ratio between the minimum value of the diagonal elements of the adaptation gain matrix and a set of pre-defined threshold values. This approach requires only acceleration measurements and is particularly robust to the integration errors introduced in determining velocities and displacements. Such an algorithm has been implemented for both parametric and non-parametric identification studies. For the case of no a priori information on the type of the structural model, an analytical method based on a power series of multivariable polynomial expansions has been introduced. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach has been shown in various numerical simulations, considering the effects of excitation amplitude, of measurement noise, of a priori mass estimation error, and of exact-, under-, and over-parameterization of the structural model. General polynomial-type non-linear models such as Duffing and Van der Pole oscillators and Bouc-Wen hysteretic model have been analyzed using the proposed modeling process. The methodology presented in this paper leads to a more accurate and controllable on-line identification either for the estimation of time-invariant or time-varying structural parameters (for damage detection purposes) or for the prediction of the future structural response to dynamic loading. In this study, the authors propose a novel decision feedback equaliser (DFE)-based receiver, which combines channel shortening methods and dichotomous coordinate descent (DCD) recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive algorithm with variable forgetting factor (VFF). The proposed receiver can obtain its performance gain via two aspects: (i) reducing the computing complexity by channel shortening method, such as passive time reversal (pTR) filter or minimised mean-square error (MMSE) filter and (ii) improving the performance of the receiver, such as a lower bit error rate and mean-square error. Underwater acoustic (UWA) channel has the features of long multi-path spread and time-varying property. When the multi-path spread is very long, pTR or MMSE filter is used as a channel shortening pre-processing method to reduce the computing complexity in the DFE receiver. When the channel is time varying, VFF is incorporated into DCD-RLS adaptive algorithm to improve the tracking capability of the DFE receiver. The proposed receiver is appealing for practical implementations. Numerical examples and lake experimental results show that, the proposed DFE receiver can achieve a better performance in the UWA communication system.

Recursive Parametric Frequency/Spectrum Estimation for Nonstationary Signals With Impulsive Components Using variable forgetting factor

This paper proposes a general and computationally efficient parametric model-based framework for recursive frequency/spectrum estimation and feature detection of nonstationary signals, which may contain different extents of nonstationarities and impulsive components. The estimation of time-varying frequency or spectrum is formulated as a time-varying linear model identification problem, where the spectral information is estimated from the model coefficients. We then employ a QR-decomposition-based recursive least M-estimate (QRRLM) algorithm for recursive estimation of the time-varying model coefficients in impulsive environment using M-estimation. New variable forgetting factor (VFF) schemes are developed to improve the tracking performance of the QRRLM method in nonstationary environment and we use theoretical derivation and simulations to prove that the proposed VFF schemes can approach the optimal VFF selection. The resultant VFF-QRRLM algorithm is able to restrain and isolate impulsive components whereas it is able to handle different extents of spectral variations. Simulation results show that the proposed VFF-QRRLM algorithm is more robust and accurate than conventional recursive least squares-based methods in estimating both time-varying narrowband frequency components and broadband spectral components with impulsive components. Potential applications of the proposed method can be found in power quality monitoring, online fault detection and speech analysis.
