Fault current limiting transformer with variable reactance

The objective of this work is to prove experimentally the ability of a transformer with variable reactance to limit the fault current and to adjust the secondary voltage. This transformer is able to change its leakage reactance by a shift of a movable iron-core block. It has three functions of voltage transformation, fault current limitation, and voltage regulation. A small trial apparatus was manufactured and these functions were demonstrated experimentally. Its characteristics and some points that should be improved are also clarified.

This paper presents circularly polarized microstrip antennas (CP MSA) for frequency control with a variable reactance. Operating frequency of circular polarization of the proposed antennas can be controlled by the variable reactance. 8% bandwidth with axial ratio less than 3 dB and over 3 dBi gain is obtained by the proposed CP MSA. In order to enhance the CP bandwidth, a stacked CP MSA for frequency control with the variable reactance is also designed. 23% bandwidth with axial ratio less than 3 dB and over 7 dBi gain is achieved by the stacked CP MSA. Stable LHCP radiation patterns with low cross polarization are observed in the CP bandwidth for the both CP MSAs. The variable reactance is realized by one varactor diode, therefore, it is demonstrated that frequency control of the proposed CP MSAs is accomplished by one varactor diode.

To show experimentally the ability of a transformer with variable reactance to restrict the fault current and to regulate the secondary voltage is goal of this paper. This transformer is capable of change its leakage reactance by using a shift of a movable iron-core block. It plays role of three functions of voltage transformation, fault current restriction and voltage regulation. Small trial equipment was developed and those functions were tested practically. Its characteristics should be advanced and those are also clarified.

One of them is first order poincare map. It is suitable for the systems with one fixed point on every switching period however;if the system has low periodic response in steady state the first order poincare map can not analyze behavior of the systems. In this case modified poincare map can determine stability of the systems. In this paper VAPAR stability with ac source include capacitor mode by modified poincare map is investigated. The stability region for period of time varying system can be found by eigenvalues loci of modified poincare map. For computing of jacobian matrix, the fixed point on each period is calculated by averaging theory.

Voltage stability has of recent been a subject of growing concern to power system utilities. In this paper, 2 techniques, one based on topological structure of power networks and the other on the conventional power flow solution, are proposed for voltage stability analysis. The network structural characteristics theory participation factor proposed is formulated to identify the weak bus of the system. The voltage stability enhancement is achieved through the incorporation of power electronic-based thyristor-controlled series compensator device. This is done by modifying the admittance matrix and network structural characteristics theory participation factor formulated to incorporate the effect of variable reactance of thyristor-controlled series compensator device. The second suggested approach based on power flow is also investigated. The results of both techniques are compared with the conventional approaches. The results of simulations obtained show that voltage stability enhancement can significantly be achieved from the network structural point of view, as it saves time and reduces system computational burden.

A reflector that satisfies Abbé's sine condition requires the angle of reflection to differ from the angle of incidence. This can be achieved with an artificial reactive surface with variable reactance. To show this, a wedge made of an array of shorted square waveguides is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that an analysis, based on the modal-matching technique, can accurately predict the scattered beam positions and magnitudes due to an incident wave of either parallel or perpendicular polarisation. The angle of reflection can easily be controlled by choosing a proper wedge angle. The results suggest a great promise for the design of a coma-corrected reflector or lens antenna for both polarisations.

The recent development of a semiconductor device technology realizes small-size, lightweight, high performance power switching devices. However, reactive elements such as an inductor or a PWM inverter achieves high-performance current control, which is applied to the active filter, and so on [2, 4]. If a compact and high efficient reactive component is developed, the power converter technology may drastically change the application field. In this paper, the concept of variable active-passive reactance (VAPAR) which consists of an inverter and passive elements is proposed. The VAPAR behaves like a two-terminal reactive element and the produced active reactance component works as a passive reactive component, including in transient state. The principle of VAPAR and two possible control schemes to realize VAPAR are realized. Through simulations and experiments, it is verified that VAPAR shows reactive characteristics not only in steady state, but also in transient state, as proposed, and basic characteristics of both control schemes are clarified.
