CGDK: An extensible CorelDRAW vba program for geological drafting

Corel Geological Drafting Kit (CGDK), a program written in vba, has been designed to assist geologists and geochemists with their drafting work. It obtains geological data from a running Excel application directly, and uses the data to plot geochemical diagrams and to construct stratigraphic columns. The software also contains functions for creating stereographic projections and rose diagrams, which can be used for spatial analysis, on a calibrated geological map. The user-friendly program has been tested to work with CorelDRAW 13-14-15 and Excel 2003-2007. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper Excel vba is used for batch calculation in Local Singularity Analysis (LSA), which is for the information extracting from different kinds of geoscience data. Capabilities and advantages of a new module called Batch Tool for Local Singularity Index Mapping (BTLSIM) are: (1) batch production of series of local singularity maps with different settings of local window size, shape and orientation parameters;(2) local parameter optimization based on statistical tests;and (3) provision of extra output layers describing how spatial changes induced by parameter optimization are related to spatial structure of the original input layers. Numerous companies are using the MS Office package at different levels of their corporate hierarchy, including MS Excel spreadsheet, which is a tool for data processing in the form of tables. Data are usually imported directly in MS Excel environment, often from a file with a different data format. It frequently happens in practice that as a result of such data import a problem may occur that can have fatal consequences for the company. The problem is that some data may have different data format in the imported file than it is expected in the table after importing. Internal MS Excel functions for mathematical operations ignore cell values that are not numeric and do not enter into the function calculation. Though internal functions ignore cells whose data type is not numeric, they do not inform the user about this fact. This paper therefore aims at not only informing about this adverse effect of certain internal mathematical functions, but also at explaining the way to eliminate the problem. The Visual Basic for Application tool (vba), which is an MS Office internal tool, will be used for it. The outcome of the paper Will be the design, analysis and creation of a sample function in the vba environment that would warn the user of the input data inconsistency, thus eliminating irrelevant results. The paper uses examples of common methods of mathematical operations for data processing in MS Excel, and provides their comparison including measures to eliminate the undesirable effect.

TerCharts is a comprehensive, fast, flexible, and versatile ternary charting utility that can be used for ternary data presentation analysis and modeling across many scientific disciplines. TerCharts is developed using Microsoft (MS) Excel 2003 and Visual Basic for Applications (vba) which is an object oriented programming language developed by MS as a tool to enhance the capabilities of MS products. The Excel-vba interface is important because normally chemical, geochemical, and mineralogical data used in teaching and basic research are processed using Excel spreadsheets, making TerCharts a more convenient tool for generating ternary charts which in turn can be used for data presentation and analysis. Ternary charts generated by this utility can be improved, edited, and modified utilizing MS Excel's powerful charting and editing techniques.

Many companies use the MS Office programme at various levels of their internal hierarchy. This programme includes the MS Excel table processor, a tool for processing data in tabular form. However widely this data processing tool may be used, its utilization hardly ever goes beyond its internal functions. Based on a survey I have conducted in companies I worked for as a competitiveness consultant, I have reached the conclusion that MS Excel is far from being used to its full potential. I have found out that around 95 % companies using MS Excel have never used the Visual Basic for Applications internal programming language (or vba), an internal tool within the MS Office package. The main reason why such a high percentage of employees do not use the vba programming language is simple: they have not been informed about its possibilities by their provider (employer). It is quite understandable that someone who has no experience with programming or algorithmization will be reluctant to create their own user functions. Paradoxically, however, I have found the same situation in companies which have their own IT departments responsible for software development. Therefore, one of the aims of this article is to show how vba can be used in bulk data processing, and in particular to create matrix functions simulating database functionality. I have used some of the existing MS Excel internal functions to draw a comparison with my proposal.

Working for companies as an instructor, I am often asked questions about how existing solutions or computations of concrete tables in MS Excel could possibly be changed or modified. The existing solutions or methods of computation I have seen were often unnecessarily complex, complicated, and not enough flexible, especially when it comes to changing the input data. This complexity of computational algorithms is usually due to the fact that people are unaware of the entire range of possibilities MS Excel offers. As I have indicated earlier, the knowledge and skills of employees who use MS Excel in their job (hereinafter referred to as referents") vary from company to company. Based on internal research I have conducted while training referents in companies, I have reached the conclusion that about 95 % of them do not know about the possibilities MS Excel provides through vba. In general, companies which provide regular training for their employees indirectly increase their competitiveness by increasing their employees productivity of work. Although may be quite understandable that a referent who has no experience with programming or algorithmization is unlikely to create his own user functions, the employees should be aware of these possibilities and work together with the ICT department on fulfilling their requirements. Thus the goal of this article is to show yet another possibility of mass data processing which consists in the development and application of user vba matrix function, and compare this function with the other possibilities available within the MS Excel environment.

In Korea, many small and medium size companies have introduced information system for their effective management. The Korean government have supported them to set this system. But many of these companies failed to utilize this system. One reason is high maintenance and customization cost. In this research, we developed an effective methodology for constructing an information system by themselves. And they can easily renew their system according to the change of their business process. This methology cannot support the internet version, but low cost and easy to maintenance will be the strongest point to set up an early version of information system for small size companies.
