The new generation of video coding standards, versatile video coding (VVC), integrates a range of loop filter mechanisms, notably the De-Blocking Filter (DBF), Sample Adaptive Offset (SAO), and Adaptive Loop Filter (ALF). However, these traditional tools are handcrafted empirically and have limitations. Thus many CNN-based loop filters have been proposed to achieve better image quality. In this paper, we propose a novel network based on coding Unit (CU) partition feature transformation, called PFT-ILF. Considering that the CU partition map contains image distortion information, our approach innovatively utilizes the CU partition map as prior information to guide filtering. And we design a Partition Feature Transform (PFT) layer, which uses partition features to generate modulation parameters pair for adjusting the features of several intermediate layers in the network. We integrate our proposed filter into the NNVC standard software VTM11.0_NNVC-4.0 and conduct ablation experiments. Under the all intra configuration, our method achieves Bjontegaard-Delta Bit-Rate (BD-BR) reductions of 7.52%, 17.36%, and 18.65% for Y, U, and V components, respectively.

Light field cameras (or plenoptic cameras) made it possible to not only capture information about the light intensity in a scene, but also the light direction traveling in space. The resulting light field images added two extra spatial dimensions to conventional 2D images by capturing a scene from different angles. Light field technology is expected to deliver the needed six-degrees-of-freedom in virtual reality, and it is a cornerstone technology in holography. Due to the vast amount of data a light field needs to capture for representing high-resolution images, the need of new coding solutions has been considered. While coding standards aiming at plenoptic images are something to be expected in the near future, video coding standards are one of the most efficient solutions to compress light fields. There are countless scanning topologies for restructuring a light field image into a 2D video, and similarly, numerous prediction structures to be used for inter-prediction. In this paper, we provide a comparison of light field image coding performance using the three latest generations of video compression standards. Moreover, we assess a set of coding structures aiming for optimal compression rates as well as random access capabilities. Results show the necessary trade-off between bandwidth and potential random access between light field views at decoding level. Bitrate savings up to 25% were achieved at certain cases where the proposed prediction structure is used over a common scheme used in the literature. The findings of this overview provide a useful benchmark for future development of light field image coding solutions using video coding standards.

As a new coding tool of versatile video coding, Luma Mapping with Chroma Scaling (LMCS) maps luma samples and scales chroma residuals based on the mapping function to improve video quality and compression ratio. To achieve real-time decoding and improve the throughput, a hardware decoder needs to be developed. In this paper, a high throughput LMCS hardware decoder design was proposed. Three separate modules were designed to realize the LMCS processes with two implementation schemes of the Luma Mapping module discussed and the better one used. The proposed design reached 535 MHz at 28nm technology, capable of processing videos at 4K@120fps. © 2023 IEEE.

The release of new head-mounted displays (HMDs) are expected to drive higher demand for eXtended Reality (XR) services. In preparation for the demand, H.266 versatile video coding (VVC) was proposed to effectively support highly immersive videos. In this paper, the H.266/VVC standard is introduced, protocols for real-Time video streaming are surveyed. Finally, the test environment and energy modeling of the immersive video streaming on smartphones are presented. © 2024 IEEE.

Object-Cooperated Ternary Tree Partitioning Decision Method for versatile video coding

In this paper, we propose an object-cooperated decision method for efficient ternary tree (TT) partitioning that reduces the encoding complexity of versatile video coding (VVC). In most previous studies, the VVC complexity was reduced using decision schemes based on the encoding context, which do not apply object detecion models. We assume that high-level objects are important for deciding whether complex TT partitioning is required because they can provide hints on the characteristics of a video. Herein, we apply an object detection model that discovers and extracts the high-level object features-the number and ratio of objects from frames in a video sequence. Using the extracted features, we propose machine learning (ML)-based classifiers for each TT-split direction to efficiently reduce the encoding complexity of VVC and decide whether the TT-split process can be skipped in the vertical or horizontal direction. The TT-split decision of classifiers is formulated as a binary classification problem. Experimental results show that the proposed method more effectively decreases the encoding complexity of VVC than a state-of-the-art model based on ML.

Complexity Analysis of a versatile video coding Decoder over Embedded Systems and General Purpose Processors

The increase in high-quality video consumption requires increasingly efficient video coding algorithms. versatile video coding (VVC) is the current state-of-the-art video coding standard. Compared to the previous video standard, high efficiency video coding (HEVC), VVC demands approximately 50% higher video compression while maintaining the same quality and significantly increasing the computational complexity. In this study, coarse-grain profiling of a VVC decoder over two different platforms was performed: One platform was based on a high-performance general purpose processor (HGPP), and the other platform was based on an embedded general purpose processor (EGPP). For the most intensive computational modules, fine-grain profiling was also performed. The results allowed the identification of the most intensive computational modules necessary to carry out subsequent acceleration processes. Additionally, the correlation between the performance of each module on both platforms was determined to identify the influence of the hardware architecture.

Low complexity versatile video coding for traffic surveillance system

The versatile video coding (VVC) standard can efficiently compress the video data of traffic surveillance system, however, the encoding complexity of VVC is quite high. In this paper, we propose an efficient motion estimation (ME) algorithm for improving the encoding complexity of VVC. First, we propose a content oriented adaptive search range setting algorithm, where the search range size of the children coding units (CUs) can be adaptively set by using the best motion vector information of their parent CU. In addition, based on the high spatial correlation and similar characteristics, we propose a fast reference frame direction decision algorithm to further reduce the ME encoding complexity. The simulation results show that the encoding complexity saving performance of the proposed algorithm is quite well, i.e., the total encoding time is saved by an average of 34.27%, and the ME encoding time is saved by an average of 40.79%.

Simplified Triangular Partitioning Mode in versatile video coding

The emerging versatile video coding (VVC) standard currently adopts Triangular Partitioning Mode (TPM) to make more flexible inter prediction. Due to the motion search and motion storage for TPM, the complexity of the encoder and decoder is significantly increased. This letter proposes two simplifications of TPM for reducing the complexity of the current design. One simplification is to reduce the number of combinations of motion vectors for both partitions to be checked. The method gives 4% encoding time decrease with negligible BD-rate loss. Another one is to remove the reference picture remapping process in the motion vector storage of TPM. It reduces the complexity of the encoder and decoder without a BD-rate change for the random-access configuration.

Fast coding unit partitioning algorithms for versatile video coding intra coding*

versatile video coding (VVC) is the newest video compression standard. It adopts quadtree with nested multitype tree (QT-MTT) to encode square or rectangular coding units (CUs). The QT-MTT coding structure is more flexible for encoding video texture, but it is also accompanied by many time-consuming algorithms. So, this work proposes fast algorithms to determine horizontal or vertical split for binary or ternary partition of a 32 x 32 CU in the VVC intra coding to replace the rate-distortion optimization (RDO) process, which is time-consuming. The proposed fast algorithms are actually a two-step algorithm, including feature analysis method and deep learning method. The feature analysis method is based on variances of pixels, and the deep learning method applies the convolution neural networks (CNNs) for classification. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce encoding time by 28.94% on average but increase Bjontegaard delta bit rate (BDBR) by about 0.83%.

versatile video coding is a new video coding standard that has more capabilities and higher coding efficiency compared with its predecessor. Practical video storage and transmission applications face constrained buffer size and available bandwidth. It is necessary to design the appropriate rate control algorithm to overcome such challenges. In this paper, the non-linear relationship between consumed bits, buffer size, and quantization parameter is estimated by taking the advantages of artificial neural networks, and a rate control algorithm is developed for real-time variable bit rate applications of the versatile video coding standard. The proposed rate control algorithm performs the control action in only one step that results in faster control action. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm controls the bit-rate as well as the buffer state. Also, the rate-distortion analysis shows that the well-known A-domain algorithm has only 2.7% bit-rate reduction in comparison with the proposed method.
