The paper presents a systematic and comprehensive overview of the third generation of Audio video standard (AVS) in China. The AVS standards continuously attract extensive attention both domestically and worldwide along with the industrialization of AVS2 standard and the broadcasting of China Central Television (CCTV) 4K channel. Currently, AVS3 has adopted many novel coding techniques including block partitioning structure, intra/inter and transform coding tools. The compression performance has been significantly improved that the latest version of AVS3 obtains about 24.3% and 26.88% bit-rate reduction against AVS2 and HEVC respectively under 4K resolution sequences.

In order to ensure the compatibility among video codecs from distinct manufacturers and applications, intensive efforts have been undertaken in recent years. For example, a digital video, its size is very large to be stored in memory of storage device. Practically, video should be processed to make it more practical to be shared, at the same time maintaining the quality of the video and avoiding error rate to occur during the transmission. All the issues were discussed in this paper. This paper describes the comparison of video coding standard and discusses on video transmission. For instance, a sample video has 320 x 240 pixels per frame, 24 frames per second, total 265 minutes full color video. Thus, several video compression standards had been used to analyse the throughput and round trip time performance base on different bit rates. The result shows the video with a higher bit rate will have a higher throughput. This experiment could proceed by applying a new method of video compression with the latest video coding standard to analyse the performances.

This paper provides an overview of the feature and the characteristics of the MPEG-5 EVC standard.

High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) is the newest video coding standard, which is developed by the Joint Collaborative Team on video coding (JCT-VC) consisting of ITUT video coding Experts Group (VCEG) and ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). To improve the coding efficiency, HEVC adopts many new key techniques, such as coding tree unit, prediction unit, transform unit, multi-angle intra prediction, variable PU motion estimation, sample adaptive offset, and so on. Compared with its predecessor-H.264/AVC, HEVC is able to save about 50% bit rate while maintaining almost the same perceptual video quality. This paper aims to illustrate the key techniques of the HEVC standard and preview its extension in the near future.

In this paper,we present a new method to enhance image quality at face region of head and shoulder type image sequence and to shorten processing latency to achieve synchronization between lip movement and voice (lip sync).The new method can significantly improve image quality at face region and reduce frame skip operation during high movement image coding. Improvement is done by allocating more bits budget to the face region,where the center of perceptual interest point usually *** number of bits of dynamically change background region is compressed by applying temporal filter to suppress background *** design a new fast rate control based on non-zero coefficient evaluation to shorten compression *** experimental result shows the increment of face region's PSNR by around 2 dB,the decreasing of skipping operation around 60 frames during encoding of 382 frames of highly movement video sequence and the advantage of having a very small compression latency around 3 frames which can resolve the lips sync problem.

In this paper, coding efficiency comparisons of emerging video codecs, HEVC, VP9 and AVS2 video, are conducted. The purpose of this paper is to provide useful information about the current state-of-the-art video codecs and to help both academia and industry to get insight for developing advanced techniques on top of them. At first, design differences among the three video codecs are given briefly and then coding efficiency comparisons are conducted in random access and low delay condition. According to experimental results, HEVC outperforms VP9 and AV2 video by 24.9% and 6.5% in random access condition, respectively. In low delay condition, HEVC also outperforms VP9 and AVS2 video by 8.7% and 14.5%, respectively.

QTMT-LNN: A fast intra CU partition using lightweight neural network for 360-degree video coding on VVC

In the newest generation of video coding standard, Versatile video coding (VVC), a new technique called Quad Tree with nested Multi-type Tree (QTMT) structure is introduced. QTMT significantly improves the coding efficiency, but the improvement in compression performance comes at the cost of drastically increased complexity. This paper proposes a fast intra partition algorithm using Lightweight Neural Network (LNN) to skip QTMT partition steps which are unlikely to be chosen as the best split modes. Specifically, five LNNs (for five QTMT split modes) are trained, using features that consider the characteristic of 360-degree videos. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed QTMT-LNN can reduce the encoding time from 52.28% to 72.17% on average, with coding efficiency losses ranging from 0.71% to 1.78%. Compared to other fast algorithms for intra coding unit (CU) partition, the method outperforms the related works in terms of Bjontegaard delta bit-rate (BDBR) and encoding time reduction.

Efficient video coding using optimal compression plane and background modelling

All existing video coding standards consider a video as a temporal (along T-axis) collection of two-dimensional (2D) pictures (formed by XY-axes) and compress them by exploiting spatial and temporal redundancy in the pictures. A recent optimal compression plane (OCP) determination technique shows that better compression can be achieved by relaxing the physical meaning of axes by exploring information redundancy in a fuller extent where a video is considered as a 3D data cube. Spatial and temporal dimensions are determined based on the statistical redundancy along each axis. Treating a video as a 3D data cube revolutionises the traditional video features such as background, motion, object, zooming, panning etc. In this study, the authors apply dynamic background modelling to the OCP plane to exploit the newly generated background in the video for further improving the coding performance. The experimental results reveal that the proposed approach outperforms the existing state-of-the-art OCP technique as well as the H.264 video coding standard.

Error resilient video coding with priority data classification using H.264 flexible macroblock ordering

Flexible macroblock ordering (FMO) is a new error resilience feature in the H.264 (MPEG-4 part 10) video coding standard. The paper exploits FMO to offer a new classification algorithm for prioritised video transmission. Instead of using the default mapping structures of FMO, an optimisation algorithm in which the more important macroblocks (MBs) are categorised in a separate slice group (SG), which corresponds to high-priority packets for transmission, is proposed. The importance of each MB is determined based on its eventual influence on picture quality. This is assessed by considering the fact that the successful transmission of an MB not only enhances the quality of the associated pixels, but also improves the quality of its adjacent lost MBs by improving the efficiency of error concealment. It is assumed that the network can offer a prioritised service for successful transmission of the high-priority SG. Based on this, a vulnerability factor for each MB is determined, and a certain proportion of high-vulnerability MBs at each frame to limit the impact of temporal error propagation is intra-updated. It is shown, where the proposed mapping algorithm outperforms the default mappings of the H.264 codec, that this prioritised transmission will improve the subjective and objective video quality in situations with a high probability of transmission errors.
