Error resilient video coding with priority data classification using H.264 flexible macroblock ordering

Flexible macroblock ordering (FMO) is a new error resilience feature in the H.264 (MPEG-4 part 10) video coding standard. The paper exploits FMO to offer a new classification algorithm for prioritised video transmission. Instead of using the default mapping structures of FMO, an optimisation algorithm in which the more important macroblocks (MBs) are categorised in a separate slice group (SG), which corresponds to high-priority packets for transmission, is proposed. The importance of each MB is determined based on its eventual influence on picture quality. This is assessed by considering the fact that the successful transmission of an MB not only enhances the quality of the associated pixels, but also improves the quality of its adjacent lost MBs by improving the efficiency of error concealment. It is assumed that the network can offer a prioritised service for successful transmission of the high-priority SG. Based on this, a vulnerability factor for each MB is determined, and a certain proportion of high-vulnerability MBs at each frame to limit the impact of temporal error propagation is intra-updated. It is shown, where the proposed mapping algorithm outperforms the default mappings of the H.264 codec, that this prioritised transmission will improve the subjective and objective video quality in situations with a high probability of transmission errors.

Emerging ubiquitous multimedia services are expected to be available anytime, anywhere, and using different computing devices. video compression is necessary for transmission of digital video over today's band-limited networks, or for storage constrained applications. This paper gives a short overview over previous video coding standards and analyzes in more detail H.264, which is the latest international video coding standard. Since scalable video coding (SVC) provides the capability of reconstructing lower resolution or lower quality signals from partial bitstream, it is a good paradigm to the streaming video application for ubiquitous multimedia service. Hence, we also discuss several coding techniques and frameworks for SVC including fine granular scalability (FGS).

The new state-of-the-art video coding standard, H.265/HEVC, has been finalized in 2013 and it achieves roughly 50% bit rate saving compared to its predecessor, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. This paper provides the evidence that there is still potential for further coding efficiency improvements. A brief overview of HEVC is firstly given in the paper. Then, our improvements on each main module of HEVC are presented. For instance, the recursive quadtree block structure is extended to support larger coding unit and transform unit. The motion information prediction scheme is improved by advanced temporal motion vector prediction, which inherits the motion information of each small block within a large block from a temporal reference picture. Cross component prediction with linear prediction model improves intra prediction and overlapped block motion compensation improves the efficiency of inter prediction. Furthermore, coding of both intra and inter prediction residual is improved by adaptive multiple transform technique. Finally, in addition to deblocking filter and SAO, adaptive loop filter is applied to further enhance the reconstructed picture quality. This paper describes above-mentioned techniques in detail and evaluates their coding performance benefits based on the common test condition during HEVC development. The simulation results show that significant performance improvement over HEVC standard can be achieved, especially for the high resolution video materials.

High efficiency video coding (HEVC) is the newest video coding standard of the ITU-T video coding Experts Group and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group. The introduction of multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) eigenbeam-space division multiplexing (E-SDM) systems makes it possible to increase data rate by multiplexing different data streams on multiple parallel eigen-channels. In this paper, we propose a MIMO video transmission scheme for scalable high efficiency video coding (SHVC), which is the scalable extension of H.265/HEVC. Simulation results show that our video transmission scheme has more potential to broadcast video streams efficiently than conventional MIMO systems.

Conventional video coding techniques make use of the most recently decoded reference frame(s) for motion-compensated inter prediction. However, it has been shown that to allow using reference frames in a flexible way such that not only the latest reference frames are used is beneficial. A typical use of flexible reference frame is feedback based reference picture selection, wherein error-free reference frames available in both the encoder and decoder sides are selected and used for inter prediction reference. This paper first overviews support of reference picture selection in different video coding standards, and then presents three specific feedback based reference picture selection methods using flexible reference frames. In addition, a novel simple reference frame management method that enables using of flexible reference frame is proposed. The reference frame management method enables much simpler video codec implementations compared to the complex reference frame management methods in H.263 Annex U and H.264/AVC. The proposed coding methods and some conventional methods are compared with each other. Simulation results show significantly improved error resiliency performance of the proposed reference picture selection methods compared to conventional methods. The effect on the performance imposed by feedback delay variation is also shown. Thanks to the merits, support of flexible reference frame and the reference frame management has been adopted to the AVS-M video coding standard.

The discrete cosine transform type II can efficiently approximate the Karhunen-Loeve transform under the first-order stationary Markov condition. However, the highly dynamic characteristics of natural images will not always follow the first-order stationary Markov condition. It is well known that multi-core transforms and non-separable transforms capture diversified and directional texture patterns more efficiently. And a combination of enhanced multiple transform (EMT) and nonseparable secondary transform (NSST) are provided in the reference software of the next generation video coding standard to solve this problem. However, the current method of combining the EMT and NSST may lead to quite significant encoder complexity increase, which makes the video codec rather impractical for real applications. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the interactions between EMT and NSST, and propose a coupled primary and secondary transform to simplify the combination to obtain a better trade-off between the performance and the encoder complexity. With the proposed method, the transform for the Luma and Chroma components is also unified for a consistent design as an additional benefit. We implement the proposed transform on top of the Next software, which has been proposed for the next generation video coding standard. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can provide significant time reduction while keeping the majority of the performance.

Different from conventional video coding techniques, the emerging AVS2 standard (the second generation of Audio video coding standard, AVS2 for short) introduces some new coding techniques mainly focuses on video coding on scene videos. Scene videos are videos with limited scenes, such as surveillance videos, conference videos, etc. For scene videos, due to the limited scenes, great redundancy especially in background region is retained in the video pictures. AVS2 scene video coding techniques aim at significantly reducing the redundancy so as to achieve higher compression performance. This paper introduces the main coding techniques in AVS2 and demonstrates the coding performance. Experimental results show that the coding efficiency has almost doubled over the main group on scene videos which brings new opportunities to the related industries on specific applications.

video coding techniques utilising background frames, provide better rate distortion performance by exploiting coding efficiency in uncovered background areas compared to the latest video coding standard. Parametric approaches such as the mixture of Gaussian (MoG) based background modeling has been widely used however they require prior knowledge about the test videos for parameter estimation. Recently introduced non-parametric (NP) based background modeling techniques successfully improved video coding performance through a HEVC integrated coding scheme. The inherent nature of the NP technique naturally exhibits superior performance in dynamic background scenarios compared to the MoG based technique without a priori knowledge of video data distribution. Although NP based coding schemes showed promising coding performances, they suffer from a number of key challenges - (a) determination of the optimal subset of training frames for generating a suitable background that can be used as a reference frame during coding, (b) incorporating dynamic changes in the background effectively after the initial background frame is generated, (c) managing frequent scene change leading to performance degradation, and (d) optimizing coding quality ratio between an I-frame and other frames under bit rate constraints. In this study we develop a new scene adaptive coding scheme using the NP based technique, capable of solving the current challenges by incorporating a new continuously updating background generation process. Extensive experimental results are also provided to validate the effectiveness of the new scheme.

Computation reduction for intra 4x4 mode decision with SATD criterion in H.264/AVC

In H.264 advanced video coding standard, the intra prediction made by referring to the surrounding coded pixels plays an important role in achieving the compression efficiency. To find the best prediction mode, the H.264 reference software JM 6. 1 d suggests two criteria, the sum of absolute differences (SAD) and the sum of absolute transformed differences (SATD). The SATD criterion with extra Hadamard transform achieves better coding performance, but needs more computation than the SAD criterion. A fast algorithm is developed to reduce the computation of the SATD, by using the property of linear transform and the fixed-spatial relationship of predicted pixels in each intra mode. With the fast SATD computation, about 50% computation of the original SATD algorithm can be reduced. To further reduce the SATD computation, a two-stage simplified SATD method is proposed, which first uses the SAD criterion to eliminate some unwanted modes and then performs the fast SATD computation to select the best mode. Experimental results show that the proposed two-stage simplified SATD method can save about 70% of computation costs with negligible PSNR loss for H.264 intra prediction.

Rate-distortion optimised quantisation (RDOQ) is generally utilised in video coding for achieving higher coding efficiency. To determine the optimal quantised level for each transform coefficient, it requires considerable complexity in practice to calculate rate-distortion (RD) costs from multiple candidates of quantised levels. This study proposes a fast RDOQ algorithm with low computational complexity for the latest video coding standard, the high-efficiency video coding. Instead of calculating the RD costs from two candidates of quantised levels separately, their RD cost differences were derived. A bit-rate estimation method is then used to accurately calculate the length of coding bits in the RD cost function, avoiding the high-computation-cost process of context-adaptive binary arithmetic coding. Experimental results show that, with a negligible degradation of coding performance, the proposed algorithm is faster than RDOQ by 74.6% in average.
