The paper devoted to methodic of programming and ways of using of object oriented programming software Microsoft Excel visual basic for applications for laboratory workshops of students in studies of computer modeling courses. The way of using of this programming environment is presented in systematic form and in kind of practical usage for students and lecturers. Here are presented all main stages and consequences for numerical simulation of classic math models in ecology via MS VBA Excel (for continual and discrete systems). The methodic of printout of results of numerical simulation and automation of Excel charts creation are presented too.

An Intelligent Reminder System Reduces Deficiencies and Errors in Ultrasound Reports

Objectives We designed a computer-based, integrated intelligent reminder system to reduce the deficiencies and errors in ultrasound (US) reports. In this study, we assessed the performance of this system and evaluated its impact on the quality of US reporting. Methods Ultrasound reporting deficiencies or errors were divided into 2 categories: missing items (including outpatient or inpatient number and clinical diagnosis) and content errors (including measurement data, sex-related, and laterality errors). The intelligent reminder system was designed in visual basic for applications (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, WA) and integrated with the US system. It automatically detects reporting errors before printing of the report and provides real-time prompts for correction of the errors. We compared the US reporting deficiencies and errors during the 20 months before and after implementation of the system. Results Before implementation of the system, deficiencies/errors were detected in 2.26% (8841 of 391,230) of US reports compared with 0.12% (530 of 444,215) of reports after implementation of the system (P < .0001). After adoption of the system, the reported item deficiencies were improved more than the content deficiencies, with the most notable improvement in clinical diagnosis. Sex-related errors were reduced from 7 cases to nil after use of the intelligent reminder system. No laterality errors were found before and after the implementation of the system. Conclusions The intelligent reminder system within the US system significantly reduced deficiencies and errors, improving the quality of the report.

An easy MS Excel software to use for water distribution system design: A real case distribution network design solution

Development of an MS Excel visual basic for applications (VBA) program for water distribution network (WDN) design is presented in this paper. The tool solves a given closed-loop WDN by Hardy-Cross algorithm. Both VBA programming and MS Excel's data validation modules are employed to provide easy-to-use environment for engineers and also in the education of engineers, and moreover, software solutions in the market are expensive and hard to obtain. A step by step solution to a part of Uskudar which is a county of Istanbul network is also provided. The color-coded instructions for the correction of the network system will be helping for the users. The tool is open source and can be used for the design of WDNs by engineers and students.

BioProcessNexus: An open-source platform for surrogate techno economic models

Techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life-cycle assessment (LCA) are essential tools for evaluating manufacturing processes, but the use of proprietary software creates barriers to accessibility and reproducibility. We present the BioProcessNexus, an open-source platform that democratizes access to process modeling through surrogate models trained on Monte Carlo data from proprietary TEA software. The platform facilitates model generation, analysis, and optimization while promoting standardization and collaboration across the scientific community. We demonstrate BioProcessNexus's capabilities through a comprehensive analysis of enzymatic PET recycling, comparing three surrogate modeling types: partial least squares, random forest, and Gaussian Process regression. Our analysis revealed that enzymatic PET recycling faces economic challenges, with a unit production cost of $1.74 kg⁻¹ TPA and an expected negative gross margin of -49.5 %. Sensitivity analysis identified feedstock cost and purification strategy as key areas for optimization. BioProcessNexus enables accessible, reproducible process modeling even when proprietary software was used for the initial model development. This approach advances the open innovation initiative and promotes transparent scientific collaboration while reducing barriers to advanced process modeling and optimization techniques. In this article, we will (i) introduce the BioProcessNexus platform and (ii) showcase a use case of an enzymatic PET recycling process.

Development of an operational and tactical decision support tool for a Canadian beverage firm: a case study

This paper describes a logistics optimisation case study for a Canadian beverage manufacturer and distributor. The goal was to determine production, distribution and inventory plans for a given product line to help the company with its challenges due to production shortages, stock-outs and high transportation costs in a new and highly competitive market. We built and implemented an optimisation model in Excel with VBA as a customised planning tool. Although we originally designed the tool for operational planning, the beverage company first used it for tactical planning (in price negotiations with the firm's subcontractors, deciding whether to buy a bankrupt subcontractor production site, and quantification of carrying extra inventory). The tool has changed the way the company conducts its business planning by evaluating 'what if' scenarios, finding an optimal operational plan, and forcing the company to think more strategically and for longer horizons.

Researchers who apply for an API key to the Google Extended Trends for Health API gain access to higher quality Google Trends data than from the Google Trends website but must access the data using Python code customized for each extraction. Researchers can also only access one time-series sample per individual query per day. The Google Trends Extraction Tool provides full access to all the API methods in an Excel-based GUI, requiring only a unique API key from Google. It employs a novel multiple sampling method to circumvent the API limitation, records an audit trail, and automatically plots results.

The paper contributes to the development of a general-purpose modeling, motion simulation and off-line programming system applicable to various manipulators and mechanisms. It is based on the popular CAD software SolidWorks, widely used in many industries, and its application programming interface (API). Implemented as a SolidWorks macro (written in VBA), the system allows the direct usage of the existing robot 3D models created for manufacturing purposes and eliminates the need for additional motion simulation software, thus providing an integrated solution for the simultaneous execution of design and simulation tasks. The lightweight integration into SolidWorks and the effective interface to controllers or standalone simulators that generate the motion of the manipulators distinguish the proposed development from the currently available CAD-based robot motion simulators.

Concerning oxymethylene dimethyl ethers (e.g. a class of potential oxygenated diesel substitutes;denoted as OME), this work utilises a hybrid process model based on methanol (MeOH) and its partially selective conversion to anhydrous formaldehyde (FA, target MeOH conversion 67% and target FA selectivity 93%), which in turn is used as the feed for OME synthesis. The model couples the merits of algorithms available in the commercial software CHEMCAD (R) together with self-developed reactor models as implemented through Matlab (R) and the coupling node implemented in visual basic for applications (VBA) software. This is followed by process heat integration using PinCH 2.0 software. This modelling is complemented by experimental investigations and results concerning the synthesis of the anhydrous FA/MeOH feed through a designed and developed annular counter current reactor, with the use of Na2CO3 as an inexpensive and sustainable dehydrogenation catalyst. The process material and energy balance of the proposed process have also been used to evaluate the key performance indicators (KPIs). An overall process yield of 80.3% at 71.7% process energy efficiency and production cost of 951 US$ per ton of OME3-5 at small production capacity (35 kt per annum) demonstrates the technical and the economic potential of the described process.

Design of integral spreadsheet calculator for engineering applications

Although Newton-Cotes integration formulas in engineering have been the subject of the study for a long time, the improvement in formulations is still object of interest. In this sense, design of calculators based on these formulations becomes significant. The purpose of this paper is to design an integral calculator for any engineering problems. Since the integral calculator, easy-to-understand and use, is aimed to be employed by any kind of users. visual basic for applications (VBA) is the programming language of Excel. Excel spreadsheet with VBA is preferred for this purpose. In this study, a user interface input form is introduced. This form is composed of the embedded algorithm. This algorithm includes not only rules and formulations of each Newton-Cotes such as Composite Trapezoidal rule, Simpson's rules, Boole's rules, and Gauss Legendre formulations with 2, 6, 10, 16, and 24 points and exact result of any integral (if it exists) with computed true percent relative error for comparison purposes. This calculator is tested for civil, mechanical, and chemical engineering applications. The results and screenshots for each application obtained from calculator are presented. The present study allows design of an integral spreadsheet calculator for any integral given. If exact result of the integral cannot be obtainable, the calculator can perform only integral calculations numerically without exact solution and computed true percent relative error. Otherwise, user can solve the integrals completely with this tool easily and accurately again but this time by both numerically and analytically with true percent relative error calculations.
