TECHNICAL NOTE: DETECTING AND SUBCATEGORIZING HARD-CODING ERRORS IN BIOENERGY-RELEVANT SPREADSHEETS USING visual basic for applications (VBA)

Electronic spreadsheets play an indispensable role in the simulation, modeling, and analysis of bioenergy systems, and their results have the ability to affect decision-making significantly. Prior research has shown that spreadsheets are highly error-prone, and that a large percentage of these errors are difficult to detect. To that end, we developed computer code (implemented in visual basic for applications, running under Microsoft Excel) to detect a particularly insidious form of spreadsheet error: the hard-coding error. These errors are defined as the presence of one or more unreferenced numerical values in a cell formula. The code was used to audit six engineering spreadsheets relevant to bioenergy systems, three developed in our lab (and reported on in other sessions at the AIM), and three in the public domain. The preliminary audit results were analyzed to understand the nature and distribution of hard-coding errors. The preponderance and diversity of hard-coding errors in these spreadsheets motivated us to subcategorize them. Together, the hard-coding error detection program and sub-categorization program provide a robust and rapid means of detecting and categorizing multiple types of hard-coding errors. Use of these programs could increase the reliability of spreadsheet software used in simulation, modeling, and analysis of bioenergy systems.

An MS excel add-in for teaching hydraulics of pipe flow in engineering curricula

This paper presents implementation of an MS Excel add-in incorporating visual basic for applications for teaching pipe flow calculations in undergraduate and graduate level. The add-in contains a total of 108 functions for several purposes ranging from continuity equation to branching pipes and pipe network problems. Tip texts and a number of userforms were developed for easy use of the tool. A user's guide was also prepared that includes the theory of hydraulic calculations and numerical methods involved. Being an add-in for MS Excel, the tool is a perfect candidate for implementing as an educational tool in undergraduate and graduate level education.

ExcelAutomat 1.3: Fragment analysis based on the distortion/interaction-activation strain model

The distortion/interaction-activation strain model (D/I-ASM), a fragment analysis method, is applied to study the structure-reactivity relationship in reactions. The application of D/I-ASM involves the generation of input files for points along a reaction profile, submission of input files to a quantum software package, processing of parameters from the resulting output files and generation of graphical plots. The ExcelAutomat tool (Laloo et al., J. Comput. Aided Mol. Des. 2017, 31, 667) provides a framework and library in visual basic for Application programming language to process such files. New routines were written in ExcelAutomat 1.3 to facilitate processing of files for D/I-ASM. The worksheet "ASM" was included where initial parameters needed can be defined. The routines for D/I-ASM were tested successfully on bimolecular nucleophilic substitution, cycloaddition, and barrierless reactions. The automation of fragment analysis by ExcelAutomat 1.3 is compatible with Microsoft Excel and LibreOffice Calc. The extensible tool processes files from Gaussian and GAMESS-US packages. Pearson's chi-square test is widely employed in social and health sciences to analyse categorical data and contingency tables. For the test to be valid, the sample size must be large enough to provide a minimum number of expected elements per category. This paper develops functions for regrouping strata automatically, thus enabling the goodness-of-fit test to be performed within an iterative procedure. The usefulness and performance of these functions is illustrated by means of a simulation study and the application to different datasets. Finally, the iterative use of the functions is applied to the Continuous Sample of Working Lives, a dataset that has been used in a considerable number of studies, especially on labour economics and the Spanish public pension system.

Development of a Microsoft Excel tool for applying a factor retention criterion of a dimension coefficient to a survey on patient safety culture

Background: Many quality-of-life studies have been conducted in healthcare settings, but few have used Microsoft Excel to incorporate Cronbach's a with dimension coefficient (DC) for describing a scale's characteristics. To present a computer module that can report a scale's validity, we manipulated datasets to verify a DC that can be used as a factor retention criterion for demonstrating its usefulness in a patient safety culture survey (PSC). Methods: Microsoft Excel visual basic for applications was used to design a computer module for simulating 2000 datasets fitting the Rasch rating scale model. The datasets consisted of (i) five dual correlation coefficients (correl. = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and 1.0) on two latent traits (i.e., true scores) following a normal distribution and responses to their respective 1/3 and 2/3 items in length;(ii) 20 scenarios of item lengths from 5 to 100;and (iii) 20 sample sizes from 50 to 1000. Each item containing 5-point polytomous responses was uniformly distributed in difficulty across a +/- 2 logit range. Three methods (i.e., dimension interrelation >= 0.7, Horn's parallel analysis (PA) 95% confidence interval, and individual random eigenvalues) were used for determining one factor to retain. DC refers to the binary classification (1 as one factor and 0 as many factors) used for examining accuracy with the indicators sensitivity, specificity, and area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The scale's reliability and DC were simultaneously calculated for each simulative dataset. PSC real data were demonstrated with DC to interpret reports of the unit-based construct validity using the author-made MS Excel module. Results: The DC method presented accurate sensitivity (=0.96), specificity (=0.92) with a DC criterion (=0.70), and AUC (=0.98) that were higher than those of the two PA methods. PA combined with DC yielded good sensitivity (=0.96), specificity (= 1.0) with a DC criterion (=0.70), and AUC (=0.99). Conclusion

Energy efficiency evaluation of a natural gas pipeline based on an analytic hierarchy process

A long-distance natural gas pipeline system consists of considerable equipment and many pipe segments, but the conventional energy efficiency index of a natural gas pipeline is considered as a whole. Because the specific energy consumption of each unit cannot be determined, the index system is not perfect, and evaluating the energy efficiency of a natural gas pipeline system is difficult. The energy efficiency evaluation model for a natural gas pipeline was established using the analytic hierarchy process. A judgment matrix was constructed based on the energy efficiency index system of a long-distance natural gas pipeline, and the weight coefficient was calculated using the characteristic root method. Then, the consistency of the established judgment matrix was verified. The energy efficiency evaluation model successfully quantified the qualitative factors that affect natural gas pipelines. The comprehensive energy efficiency coefficient G of the natural gas pipeline was obtained from the operational data of the natural gas pipeline;then, the equipment or pipe segments with high energy consumption can be identified. The energy efficiency evaluation program of the natural gas pipeline was developed using visual basic for applications, which significantly reduced the evaluation workload. The natural gas pipeline energy efficiency evaluation model is used to evaluate the energy efficiency of a natural gas pipeline, to identify the high energy consumption equipment or pipe segments, and to propose measures to improve the energy efficiency. The results show that the gas pipeline energy efficiency evaluation model and evaluation procedures can identify high energy consumption equipment or pipe sections in complex natural gas pipelines.

The spatial distribution of metals in biological tissue is an important field in biomedical research. Based on the fundamental significance of metals in health, many metal imaging analysis methods were developed during the last decades. Metal and non-metal imaging by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is an effective mean to obtain data in high spatial resolution and sensitivity. Unfortunately, the visualization of metal measurements normally needs special software solutions. This work reports the development of a new software tool allowing the reconstruction of metal distribution maps using Microsoft Excel 2007 with the aid of visual basic for applications (VBA) user-defined functions. This routine uses continuous lists of measured data points as raw input. A key step is the determination of the correct length of measurement lines to constitute images without shearing. Adaption to special requirements is easy. It permits the fast generation of high quality scaled images from Microsoft Excel. Moreover, the visualization tool is simply transferable to other systems and can export the images in common image formats such as TIFF or JPG which then can be read out by established image treatment and region of interest handling software such as Image J. Pharmacokinetics can be a challenging topic to teach due to the complex relationships inherent between physiological parameters, mathematical descriptors and equations, and their combined impact on shaping the blood fluid concentration vs. time curves of drugs. A computer program was developed within Microsoft Excel for Windows, designed to assist in the instruction of basic pharmacokinetics within an entry-to-practice pharmacy class environment. The program is composed of a series of spreadsheets (modules) linked by visual basic for applications, intended to illustrate the relationships between pharmacokinetic and in some cases physiological parameters, doses and dose rates and the drug blood fluid concentration vs. time curves. Each module is accompanied by a simulation user's guide, prompting the user to change specific independent parameters and then observe the impact of the change(s) on the drug concentration vs. time curve and on other dependent parameters. "Slider" (or "scroll") bars can be selected to readily see the effects of repeated changes on the dependencies. Topics covered include one compartment single dose administration (iv bolus, oral, short infusion), intravenous infusion, repeated doses, renal and hepatic clearance, nonlinear elimination, two compartment model, plasma protein binding and the relationship between pharmacokinetics and drug effect. The program has been used in various forms in the classroom over a number of years, with positive ratings generally being received from students for its use in the classroom. Here I present an Excel based program for the analysis of intracellular Ca transients recorded using fluorescent indicators. The program can perform all the necessary steps which convert recorded raw voltage changes into meaningful physiological information. The program performs two fundamental processes. (1) It can prepare the raw signal by several methods. (2) It can then be used to analyze the prepared data to provide information such as absolute intracellular Ca levels. Also, the rates of change of Ca can be measured using multiple, simultaneous regression analysis. I demonstrate that this program performs equally well as commercially available software, but has numerous advantages, namely creating a simplified, self-contained analysis workflow.
