Brands and retailers often offer different aesthetic versions of the same base product, which vary from visually simple to visually complex. How should managers price these different aesthetic versions of the same base product? This research provides insights for such decisions through uncovering a novel consumer lay belief about the relationship between visual complexity and production costs. Consumers associate simple (vs. complex) visual aesthetics with lower production costs when evaluating different aesthetic versions of a product. This lay belief occurs in joint evaluation mode but is mitigated in separate evaluation mode. An important downstream implication of this lay belief is that consumers' willingness to pay is lower for visually simple (vs. complex) versions. This gap in willingness to pay occurs even when consumers like both product versions or aesthetics equally, and it is only eliminated when consumers like the visually simple version substantially more than the complex version. Finally, reducing the diagnosticity of the lay belief by disclosing information that the two versions took similar amounts of production time and effort reduces the gap in willingness to pay between visually simple (vs. complex) versions.

Effects of visual complexity on user search behavior and satisfaction: an eye-tracking study of mobile news apps

The visual complexity of interface plays a crucial role in user experience. Previous studies have extensively investigated website complexity, while the visual complexity of mobile applications gets seldom attention. This study explored the effect of interface complexity of mobile news apps on user search behaviors and satisfaction by dividing visual complexity into quantity complexity and layout complexity. Thirty-four subjects were invited to take part in the task-oriented eye-tracking experiment. The results revealed that a high level of quantity complexity increased users' revisit counts, fixation counts, and saccade counts. A high level of layout complexity increased users' revisit counts and saccade counts while fixation counts decreased first and then increased. Additionally, user satisfaction was negatively correlated with quantity complexity levels, while there was an inverted-U shape between user satisfaction and layout complexity levels. Understanding the effect of visual complexity of mobile news apps on user search behaviors and satisfaction would contribute to providing better guidelines for designers to develop mobile news products with an appropriate complexity layout and improve user satisfaction.

This article presents subjective norms for 1031 emojis in six dimensions: visual complexity, familiarity, frequency of use, clarity, emotional valence, and emotional arousal. This is the largest normative study conducted so far that relies on subjective ratings. Unlike the few existing normative studies, which mainly comprise face emojis, here we present a wide range of emoji categories. We also examine the correlations between the dimensions assessed. Our results show that, in terms of their affective properties, emojis are analogous to other stimuli, such as words, showing the expected U-shaped relationship between valence and arousal. The relationship between affective properties and other dimensions (e.g., between valence and familiarity) is also similar to the relationship observed in words, in the sense that positively valenced emojis are more familiar than negative ones. These findings suggest that emojis are suitable stimuli for studying affective processing. Emoji-SP will be highly valuable for researchers of various fields interested in emojis, including computer science, communication, linguistics, and psychology. The persuasive effects of verbal anchoring and visual complexity

Many persuasive messages intermingle images with text. Readers who wish to interpret such messages must grapple with the information in both modalities as well as the relationship between them. One instance of this occurs in modern advertising, which is predominantly visual with verbal text assuming a supporting role. The text functions to anchor the meaning of the image, thereby guiding the reader to the preferred conclusion. However, little is known about how variations in verbal anchoring produce meaning and persuasion. To address this knowledge gap, the present study sketches a model of message processing in which perceived interpretational guidance is the key explanatory mechanism. A repeated measures experiment (N = 304) finds that verbal anchoring (complete vs. moderate vs. none) is positively related to perceived interpretational guidance, regardless of the complexity of an ad’s image (straightforward vs. visual rhetorical figure). Moreover, perceived interpretational guidance explains the effects of verbal anchoring on persuasion. Findings suggest that complete anchoring should be preferred over moderate or no anchoring because people value the cognitive efficiency associated with being guided in their interpretation of the ad’s visual imagery. © 2022 International visual Literacy Association.

Developing an urban streetscape indexing based on visual complexity and self-organizing map

Streetscape examinations in the digital context offer a wealth of geospatial data and application support for urban informatization, facilitating a more scientific and efficient comprehension of the city image. Currently, digital investigations on streetscapes predominantly emphasize object-based parsing rather than perception based parsing. Furthermore, there is a notable absence of a comprehensive analytical framework specifically designed to urban visual environments. Consequently, the accurate recognition and effective management of the city image have been limited. Therefore, this study parses streetscapes from the perspective of their visual perception, and accordingly develops a digital urban streetscape indexing to analyze urban visual environments. Specifically, the streetscape is decoded into multi-characteristic visual complexity including texture, shape, and color, which derive a three-dimensional dataset. The dataset is then fed into a machine learning technique, a self organizing map (SOM), for synthetic training, resulting in an indexing that sheds light on the interconnections between the visual characteristics, the streetscape, and its geo-distribution, thereby enabling a multifaceted analysis of the urban visual environment. Three relevant applications of the proposed indexing are subsequently demonstrated. This study indicates that the streetscape can be parsed by multi-characteristic visual complexity of texture, shape, and color;based on this, the developed indexing can function as a digital system that facilitates streetscape management and exploration. The theoretical and technical contributions of this study can support the sustainable development of city image within the digital context.

This study investigates the impact of visual complexity in package design on consumer perceptions and evalu-ations of a product, with a particular emphasis on how product type (vice or virtue) interacts with this effect. Drawing on the cue utilization theory and Berlyne's optimal stimulation theory, the findings of five empirical studies across various product categories consistently indicate that visually complex packaging enhances positive evaluations of virtue (vs. vice) products by increasing hedonic utility. This research contributes to the existing literature on marketing and visual communication and provides practical insights for practitioners.

Generative large language models (LLM) are trained for performing natural language processing (NLP) tasks but are known to have emergent properties that can go beyond generating trained text-based language responses. Recently, LLMs have been further augmented with multimodal capabilities such as image annotations and analysis. In this study, we aimed to investigate LLMs in terms of perceptual visual complexity analysis ability through evaluating graphical user interfaces. For this purpose, visual complexity evaluation of user interfaces (UI), which is a non-trivial task, was addressed to explore the possible roles and capabilities of the LLMs in this task. ChatGPT-4 and Bard, two of the most advanced multi modal LLMs, were explored and a comparative evaluation was conducted. According to this exploration, the two LLMs were able to evaluate the visual complexity of different input user interfaces and rank these regarding to their visual complexities. Although LLMs ranking were mostly similar to each other, relatively high differences with the user evaluation-based rankings were observed.

Does prior knowledge increase or decrease perceived visual complexity of texture images?

Previous research has shown that the perceived visual complexity of an image is correlated with understandability of the image. It was considered that prior knowledge of the contents of an image makes images easier to understand, and thus reduces perceived visual complexity. In the present study, we examined the effect of prior knowledge on perceived visual complexity of texture images. We designed an experiment in which participants observed and rated four texture images with different levels of complexity and understandability;one group of participants received prior knowledge in the form of verbal cues about the names of the target stimuli while the other group did not receive any information regarding image content. We found that the effect of prior knowledge on visual complexity perception varied for the different images. For an image with low initial complexity, if cued information about the image is three-dimensional or dynamic, prior knowledge does not decrease but instead increases the perceived visual complexity. Moreover, cues that increase perceived visual complexity can be verbal rather than visual cues.

In drug-resistant epilepsy, a visual inspection of intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) signals is often needed to localize the epileptogenic zone (EZ) and guide neurosurgery. The visual assessment of iEEG time-frequency (TF) images is an alternative to signal inspection, but subtle variations may escape the human eye. Here, we propose a deep learning-based metric of visual complexity to interpret TF images extracted from iEEG data and aim to assess its ability to identify the EZ in the brain. We analyzed interictal iEEG data from 1928 contacts recorded from 20 children with drug-resistant epilepsy who became seizure-free after neurosurgery. We localized each iEEG contact in the MRI, created TF images (1-70 Hz) for each contact, and used a pre-trained VGG16 network to measure their visual complexity by extracting unsupervised activation energy (UAE) from 13 convolutional layers. We identified points of interest in the brain using the UAE values via patient- and layer-specific thresholds (based on extreme value distribution) and using a support vector machine classifier. Results show that contacts inside the seizure onset zone exhibit lower UAE than outside, with larger differences in deep layers (L10, L12, and L13: p < 0.001). Furthermore, the points of interest identified using the support vector machine, localized the EZ with 7 mm accuracy. In conclusion, we presented a pre-surgical computerized tool that facilitates the EZ localization in the patient's MRI without requiring long-term iEEG inspection.

Herding behavior in NFT Auction: The role of visual complexity and familiarity

Despite the growing popularity of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the market, they still lack established valuation guidelines. Invoking herding and auction theories, this study investigates how NFT collectors’ bidding tendencies are influenced by other collectors’ bidding decisions (herding behavior). This study also examines how NFT visual characteristics, such as complexity and familiarity, moderate herding behavior. We use a computer vision technique to quantify the visual complexity of an NFT and apply transfer learning to capture its visual familiarity. Examining data from a widely used NFT platform, we find evidence of herding behavior in such auctions. Furthermore, our results show that there are nonlinear moderating effects of visual characteristics on herding behavior. Specifically, we find that consumers exhibit a stronger herding tendency at the two extremes of complexity distribution and at the lower extreme of familiarity distribution. Further analysis of the NFT resale market suggests that auction winners consider herding in the primary sale of an NFT as a signal of high demand;thus, they are more willing to resell it and set a higher price premium in the resale. These findings can be taken as input by the NFT market platforms in their NFT display decisions to boost primary market sales and promote resale market participation. The findings can also help content creators formulate creative strategies that lead to higher bidding probability or sales performance. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.
