visual programming Languages are a common vehicle to teach programming. Usually, these languages use two-dimensional blocks or diagrams to structure a program and some 3D versions have emerged as well. Often, the visualization of creating programs with these tools is different from executing them. We present the design and prototype of a 3D visual Avatar-based programming Environment (VAPE-3D) in the form of a visual programming language with a syntonic Avatar as its central component, and a unified visualization to edit and execute a program.

Research on BIM-Based visualization, Simulation, and Early Warning System for Shield Tunnel Construction

This study aims to facilitate a comparison between construction monitoring data and simulation results, focusing on the dynamic adjustment of safety monitoring parameters in shield construction. First, a finite element simulation was performed to define a reasonable range for shield parameters based on settlement control values, thereby determining the theoretical settlement value. An early warning system was then developed integrating two key factors: theoretical and control settlement values. Finally, Dynamo was used to merge the digital and analog data, enhancing the visual representation of the monitoring information. The findings show that combining simulations with an early warning system effectively addresses the dynamic control challenges of shield construction parameters. Furthermore, integrating digital and analog monitoring significantly improves the efficiency of real-time visualization in monitoring data. This research provides a novel and effective methodology for enhancing shield tunnel construction safety, precision, and efficiency, offering critical insights for large-scale infrastructure projects and contributing to more reliable monitoring systems in complex construction environments.

The effect on computational thinking and identified learning aspects: Comparing unplugged smartGames with SRA-programming with tangible or On-screen output

Learning basic concepts of programming resulting in a development on computational thinking (CT) can be reached by means of digital programming environments. As a counterpart, the application of unplugged programming activities seems also to have promising potential regarding the impact on CT. The main characteristic of unplugged programming is that it comprises activities without the use of information and communication technologies (ICT). Since previous research has shown that the application of sense-reason-act (SRA) programming with different types of output demonstrated a better understanding of underlying complex programming concepts with an impact on CT, our research investigates whether the application of unplugged programming, offered via SmartGames, can also generate such a distinctive impact on developing CT. To capture the effects of the different interventions applied, a mixed-methods study was conducted among primary school students aged ten to twelve. Research data were obtained by means of a pretest-posttest questionnaire survey using the validated Computational Thinking Test (CTt), and by conducting interviews to determine the effects of CT and to ascertain identifiable learning effects. Our research indicates that unplugged programming by applying SmartGames can be a consummate regarding the development of CT, similar to SRA-programming using either robotics with tangible output or robot simulations with on-screen output. The research findings identified support our claim that the application of unplugged SmartGames shows equivalent development on CT sub-characteristics in comparison with plugged-in SRA-programming with tangible or on-screen output. A better understanding of complex programming concepts and positive identified learning effects could only be partly demonstrated.

Today computing is intricate in all aspects of our lives, beginning with communications and education to banking, information security, health, shopping, and social media. Development of the computing is proportional to the development of software which is becoming a serious part of all daily lives. This paper, therefore, assessed the impact of teaching Computer programming Language in Tanzanian primary schools. To achieve this, a new tool for teaching and learning a computer programming language was developed. Furthermore, a two-tier approach was adopted where the training started on an algorithm first, then if, loops and case conditionals as the third concept inside the first tier. On the other hand, variables, lists, and functions are hooked on the second tier. Results indicate that students acquired together reasoning learning in a conceptual argument of view and skill performance. Students were able to accomplish the expertise to practice or apply the theories of programming knowledge in programming-connected tasks.

The work presented in this paper is part of PRIM project [8] which aims to enable naive users - people with no programming skills - to create human-machine interaction scenarios. This paper presents a literature review which objectives are to understand why learning computer programming and algorithms is such a complex activity, and how visual programing languages, learning tools, digital tools designed for non-developers and their features can inspire the design of a human-machine interaction scenarios authoring tool, in order to propose a series of recommendations for the design of a human-machine interaction scenarios authoring tool.

BIM to BREEAM: A workflow for automated daylighting assessment of existing buildings

By conducting an assessment of the existing building stock from the perspective of the Green Building Certification System (GBCS), it is possible to contribute to the improvement of energy utilization and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as promoted through the Renovation Wave strategy by the European Union. These aspirations will simultaneously contribute to enhancing human well-being, indoor environmental quality, and comfort. This paper describes a novel methodology for enhancing the renovation of existing buildings at the design stage using automation within the Building Information Modeling (BIM) environment. By parameterizing the requirements of GBCS using a visual programming tool, real-time insight into the number of achieved certain issue credits in the certification process is enabled. It was also created to enable designers in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations (AECO) sector to continuously monitor the development of design and make modifications as early as possible in the design process. Thus, cost overruns in design projects, as well as later renovations and building maintenance, are prevented. This research has utilized the capability of BIM to perform rapid compliance simulations with Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) requirements without the need for manual calculations and/or computer simulations in other software, which would increase the time required for analysis due to additional modeling requirements. The methodology is demonstrated using the automation of the Daylighting section of the issue Hea01 visual Comfort from the Technical Manual SD225 1.4 - BREEAM International Non -Domestic Refurbishment 2015, and the validation was performed on a BIM model of an existing building belonging to the educational sector. ConverSearch: Supporting Experts in Human Behavior Analysis of Conversational Videos with a Multimodal Scene Search Tool

Multimodal scene search of conversations is essential for unlocking valuable insights into social dynamics and enhancing our communication. While experts in conversational analysis have their own knowledge and skills to find key scenes, a lack of comprehensive, user-friendly tools that streamline the processing of diverse multimodal queries impedes efficiency and objectivity. To address this gap, we developed ConverSearch, a visual-programming-based tool based on insights for effective interface and implementation design derived from a formative study with experts. The tool allows experts to integrate various machine learning algorithms to capture human behavioral cues without the need for coding. Our user study, employing the System Usability Scale (SUS) and satisfaction metrics, demonstrated high user preference, reflecting the tool's ease of use and effectiveness in supporting scene search tasks. Additionally, through a deployment trial within industrial organizations, we confirmed the tool's objectivity, reusability, and potential to enhance expert workflows. This suggests the advantages of expert-AI collaboration in domains requiring human contextual understanding and demonstrates how customizable, transparent tools yielding reusable artifacts can support expert-driven tasks in complex, multimodal environments.

Graphics-based modular digital twin software framework for production lines

Due to the diversity of products and small batch sizes, production lines are often faced with reconfiguration or even line changes. Applying digital twin technology to production lines is one of the most promising approaches. However, factory personnel are not all aware and familiar with digital twin technology, and they have difficulty adapting or implementing digital twin scenarios. To more easily construct or reconfigure production line digital twin scenarios, this paper proposes a graphics-based, modular, and user-oriented digital twin software framework for production lines. The framework divides the digital twin implementation process into five functional modules: twin model construction, model operation, connection and interaction, control logic, visualization assistance and interaction, which are graphically encapsulated. The modular format helps standardize the construction and operation of the digital twin production line, and improves the flexibility and versatility of the framework. Meanwhile, multiple functional libraries are encapsulated to simplify the construction steps and processes based on graphical user interface. Combining visual programming to implement control logic in a low-code visual programming manner, reducing the difficulty of getting started. And various UI elements are used to enhance human-computer interaction. A digital twin platform was developed based on the proposed framework, and experiments were conducted with a hardware production line as an example. The experimental results show that it is feasible to construct digital twin production lines conveniently and reduce the complexity of the constructing process based on this platform, thus the feasibility of the framework is verified.

Improving the decision-making for sustainable demolition waste management by combining a BIM-based life cycle sustainability assessment framework and hybrid MCDA approach

Increasing efforts have been devoted to promoting sustainable demolition waste management (DWM) from a life cycle-thinking perspective. To this end, facilitating sustainability-oriented decision-making for DWM planning requires a sustainability assessment framework for assessing multifaceted criteria. This study develops a building information modelling (BIM)-based DWM sustainability assessment approach to facilitate the life cycle assessment (LCA) and decision-making by coupling the enriched Industry Foundation Classes model with hybrid multi-criteria decision-aiding (MCDA) methods using Dynamo visual scripting. To streamline the data-intensive LCA process, this study enriched the BIM properties and accommodated them into the LCA data template to enhance data interoperability, thus achieving seamless data transfer. Moreover, hybrid MCDA methods are integrated into the decision-making workflow for DWM scenario ranking. A pilot study is employed to verify the applicability of the decision-aiding framework. The results unveil that the sustainability score ascended with the recycling rate. The optimal DWM alternative with the highest recycling rate yields the highest sustainability score at 91.63. Conversely, a DWM alternative reflecting the 'status quo' in China's recycling industry has the lowest score at 8.37, significantly lower than the baseline scenario with a 50% recycling rate. It is worth noting that the 'growth curve' of the sustainability score continuously flattens as the target recycling rate escalates. The increment in recycling rate from the 'Australian standard' scenario to the optimal scenario is 18.4%, whereas the sustainability score merely increases by 2.3%, signalling that the former scenario arrived at an optimum point for maximising the cost-efficiency of DWM under the predefined framework and contexts.

A reactive extension of the Open Music visual programming language

Objectives: OpenMusic (OM) is a domain-specific visual programming language designed for computer-aided music composition. This language based on Common Lisp allows composers to develop functional processes generating or transforming musical data, and to execute them locally by demand-driven evaluations. As most historical computer-aided composition environments, OM relies on a transformational declarative paradigm, which is hard to conciliate with reactive data-flow (an evaluation scheme more adequate to the development of interactive systems). We propose to link these two evaluation paradigms in the same and consistent visual programming framework. Methods: We establish a denotational semantics of the visual language, which gives account for its demand-driven evaluation mechanism and the incremental construction of programs. We then extend this semantics to enable reactive computations in the functional graphs. Results: The resulting language merges data-driven executions with the existing demand-driven mechanism. A conservative implementation is proposed. Conclusions: We show that the incremental construction of programs and their data-driven and demand-driven evaluations can be smoothly integrated in the visual programming workflow. This integration allows for the propagation of changes in the programs, and the evaluation of graphically designed functional expressions as a response to external events, a first step in bridging the gap between computer-assisted composition environments and real-time musical systems.
