Learning Analytics to Guide Serious Game Development: A Case Study Using Articoding

Serious games are powerful interactive environments that provide more authentic experiences for learning or training different skills. However, developing effective serious games is complex, and a more systematic approach is needed to create better evidence-based games. Learning analytics-based on the analysis of collected in-game user interactions-can support game development and the players' learning process, providing assessment information to teachers, students, and other stakeholders. However, empirical studies applying and demonstrating the use of learning analytics in the context of serious games in real environments remain scarce. In this paper, we study the application of learning analytics throughout the whole lifecycle of a serious game, in order to assess the game's design and players' learning using a serious game that introduces basic programming concepts through a visual programming language. The game was played by N = 134 high school students in two 50-min sessions. During the game sessions, all player interactions were collected, including the time spent solving levels, their programming solutions, and the number of replays. We analyzed these interaction traces to gain insights that can facilitate teachers' use of serious games in their lessons and assessments, as well as guide developers in making possible improvements to the game. Among these insights, knowing which tasks students struggle with is critical for both teachers and game developers, and can also reveal game design issues. Among the results obtained through analysis of the interaction data, we found differences between boys and girls when playing. Girls play in a more reflexive way and, in terms of acceptance of the game, a higher percentage of girls had neutral opinions. We also found the most repeated errors, the level each player reached, and how long it took them to reach those levels. The emergence of foundation models, such as large language models (LLMs) GPT-4 and text-to-image models DALL-E, has opened up numerous possibilities across various domains. People can now use natural language (i.e., prompts) to communicate with AI to perform tasks. While people can use foundation models through chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT), chat, regardless of the capabilities of the underlying models, is not a production tool for building reusable AI services. APIs like LangChain allow for LLM-based application development but require substantial programming knowledge, thus posing a barrier. To mitigate this, we systematically review, summarise, refine and extend the concept of AI chain by incorporating the best principles and practices that have been accumulated in software engineering for decades into AI chain engineering, to systematize AI chain engineering methodology. We also develop a no-code integrated development environment, Prompt Sapper, which embodies these AI chain engineering principles and patterns naturally in the process of building AI chains, thereby improving the performance and quality of AI chains. With Prompt Sapper, AI chain engineers can compose prompt-based AI services on top of foundation models through chat-based requirement analysis and visual programming. Our user study evaluated and demonstrated the efficiency and correctness of Prompt Sapper.

A BIM-integrated Thailand building energy code framework for building envelope thermal requirements in a conceptual design stage

This work presents the development of a building energy code (BEC) of Thailand compliance framework during conceptual design stages (CDS) using building information modeling (BIM) through visual programming language (VPL). The proposed method included five steps: (i) establish a commercial building reference;(ii) develop a BIM base model;(iii) create a BIM overall thermal transfer value (OTTV) and roof thermal transfer value (RTTV) calculation model with VPL scripts;(iv) test the BIM framework with various scenarios;and (v) verify the results with Thailand BEC software. The findings revealed an insignificant difference between the results from the BIM calculation model and those estimated by the Thailand BEC software. This study demonstrated that using BIM with VPL for OTTV and RTTV calculations during the CDS may be implemented automatically, which could help designers make timely decisions to comply with Thailand's BEC, considering building design, materials, and fenestration ratios.

Students at study branch Geoinformatics use several software products for the creation and analyzing spatial data. Software products belong to the special information systems named Geographic Information System (GIS). The practical lectures take place in the computer laboratory. Courses are supported by e-learning portal based on open source learning platform Moodle. E-learning portal of Department of Geoinformatics supports both bachelor study "Geoinformatics and Geography" both master study "Geoinformatics". Some lectures have been created for lecturing visual programming languages. visual programming languages in GIS are aimed for the batch automatic data processing in GIS. Skills with visual programming languages are important for advanced users in GIS. visual programming languages are more comprehensible than textual programming languages. Students in second and third year are ready to learn it. They are also familiar with e-learning courses and blended learning. The presented e-learning lectures for visual programming language confirm the usability of the platform Moodle. The described experiences with the visual language programming supported by e-learning portal are based on several years of lecturing at Palacky University in Olomouc in the Czech Republic.

The application of sense-reason-act (SRA) programming in contemporary education can ensure the development of computational thinking (CT) at a more advanced level. SRA-programming has been identified as an instrumental way of thinking for learning to program robots and encourages the development of the more complex concepts of programming. visual programming environments are diverse in appearance and prove to be an excellent way to teach pupils the basic ideas of programming. It is important to investigate whether the type of output has a characteristic influence on the level of development of CT in visual programming environments. In this research, we therefore explore whether characteristic differences in the development of CT can be measured when SRA-programming is applied in a visual programming environment with an on-screen output or a tangible output. It was expected that the observed effect of pupils' programming actions through the application of SRA would show that the type of output influences the understanding of complex programming concepts at a higher level. Our results indicate that SRA-programming with visual, on-screen output yields a significant increase in the development of CT, as opposed to SRA-programming with a tangible output. The development of complex programming concepts can also be demonstrated.

The effects of goal-based scenarios used for programming education of 5th graders

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the integration of goal-based scenario (GBS) approach into a block-based coding instruction. Scratch platform was used to find out the effects of GBSs on programming skills of students, who did not have any programming experience. GBSs were used during practice and the development in students' weekly products was examined. This study was designed on the basis of mixed methodology. The quasi-experimental part includes experimental and control groups. The groups received the same lecture by the same lecturer, but in the laboratory sessions the practicing approach was designed separately. The experimental group received GBS integrated tasks. The scenario flow of each week occurred through an existing character. The students completed 10 products during one semester. The scores of students' weekly products, observation notes of the researchers, pre and post-test scores, and interview data were analyzed and used in a complimentary manner. The analyses showed that GBS integration significantly affected the knowledge and skill improvement in block-based programming. The knowncontributions of block-based tools were also observed, but the realistic nature of GBSs contributed the programming instruction in the affective dimension. They served as tools for motivation, scaffolding, and monitoring.

Generative modelling of Monopteros and Tholos temples using existing data: The case study of Vesta temple in Tivoli

This paper presents a novel method for generating geometric models of architectural heritage in the absence of a digital survey. The method employs a Generative programming (GP) algorithm for geometric model generation, with the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli chosen as a case study. Francesco Piranesi's 18thcentury etchings are utilised as references to identify the architectural layout and modularity. The effectiveness of the proposed generative workflow is highlighted through its time efficiency and the reusability of the algorithm. The workflow includes the capability to generate an export file suitable for structural simulation software packages. The generated geometric model is then used to conduct nonlinear dynamic analysis using a concurrent continuous/block-based approach within a Finite Element environment. The simulations are performed with the structure in its current state and do not account for retrofitting interventions, i.e. anchorages and tie rods are not taken into account. The numerical model reveals how local failure mechanisms of columns and entablature affect the structural safety of the Vesta temple. (c) 2024 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Masson SAS. With the promotion of IT applications and the rise of Web 2.0, mass users' individual requirements continue to emerge. How to quickly meet increasing development and maintenance requirements has been a critical problem of software development. Is it possible for end-users to develop software? This paper chooses Web information systems as the research field, studies the end-user programming technology, and designs an end-user oriented visual domain-specific language VUDSL for university Web information systems. VUDSL programming tools are also implemented, to support end-users without the knowledge of software engineering to develop target information systems by visual programming.

Solving complex visual tasks such as "Who invented the musical instrument on the right?" involves a composition of skills: understanding space, recognizing instruments, and also retrieving prior knowledge. Recent work shows promise by decomposing such tasks using a large language model (LLM) into an executable program that invokes specialized vision models. However, generated programs are error-prone: they omit necessary steps, include spurious ones, and are unable to recover when the specialized models give incorrect outputs. Moreover, they require loading multiple models, incurring high latency and computation costs. We propose visual Program Distillation (VPD), an instruction tuning framework that produces a vision-language model (VLM) capable of solving complex visual tasks with a single forward pass. VPD distills the reasoning ability of LLMs by using them to sample multiple candidate programs, which are then executed and verified to identify a correct one. It translates each correct program into a language description of the reasoning steps, which are then distilled into a VLM. Extensive experiments show that VPD improves the VLM's ability to count, understand spatial relations, and reason compositionally. Our VPD-trained PaLI-X outperforms all prior VLMs, achieving state-of-the-art performance across complex vision tasks, including MMBench, OK-VQA, A-OKVQA, TallyQA, POPE, and Hateful Memes. An evaluation with human annotators also confirms that VPD improves model response factuality and consistency. Finally, experiments on content moderation demonstrate that VPD is also helpful for adaptation to real-world applications with limited data.
