This paper introduces FlowPilot, a novel flow-based visual programming language designed to enhance Computational Thinking (CT) education. Computer programming typically requires people to describe operations in a formally specified textual language. Unfortunately, working with syntax is a significant cognitive load, making programming difficult for beginners and time-consuming for professional developers. In response to this, contemporary research often focuses on abstracting or improving the process of composing code. We believe, however, that one fundamental reason why programming is difficult is the disconnect between the symbols and metaphors used in code and the mechanics they represent. programming languages use abstractions whose superficial similarities to natural language neither effectively help users understand programs nor enable them to work creatively. To tackle this fundamental limitation, this paper introduces a new language based on a novel programming-by-demonstration paradigm that (i) enables users to experiment and test their programs, (ii) allows describing complex operations without the need to learn any syntax, and (iii) always displays an approximation of the program state while programming a new operation. We explain the rationales behind our new approach and present our design and implementation using illustrative examples and a supplemental video recording.

Computational thinking (CT) is considered a necessary skill for the 21st century. Researchers have increasingly focused on how to effectively enhance students' CT in programming courses. This study proposes a progressive scaffolding approach with flowcharts and visual programming codes applied to a visual programming course based on an open-source hardware platform to improve CT skills and self-efficacy in middle school students. Forty-five middle school students in grades 7 and 8 participated in this study. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected by using CT tests, scales, and semi-structured interviews. A repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) examined differences in CT skills and self-efficacy on the pre-test, mid-test, and post-test. The results indicated that the progressive scaffolding approach significantly improved middle school students' CT skills and self-efficacy. These results reveal the effectiveness of the progressive scaffolding approach in improving the computational thinking of middle school students in a visual programming course with an open-source hardware platform, which helps to extend the design of progressive scaffolding.

Optimization of construction site layout using BIM generative design

Construction site layout planning (CSLP) is the process of allocating temporary facilities needed on construction site. It is a complex process that aims at minimizing travel distances while improving productivity and safety. Although previous studies have enhanced the CSLP, there is a lack of studies that benefit from the potential of Building Information Modelling (BIM)-Generative Design (GD) integration in the field of site layout planning. This study aims to understand the CSLP problem from new aspects to facilitate its use for construction practitioners and site planners. The research presents a new modelling and optimization concept that utilizes BIM-GD tool to target optimum construction site layout plans to ensure a safe and productive work environment. The developed model applies the parametric visual programming basics (VP) to build the layout problem for optimization. The research includes a case study from the literature to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model. The results show a high validity for the model compared with previous models in terms of defining the problem from new aspects and applying all the calculations within the BIM environment software. The presented study shows great potential from the GD tool for more practical and complex applications in future research.

VMetaFlow: A Meta-Framework for Integrating visualizations in Coordinated View Applications

The analysis and exploration of complex data sets are common problems in many areas, including scientific and business domains. This need has led to substantial development of the data visualization field. In this paper, we present VMetaFlow, a graphical meta-framework to design interactive and coordinated views applications for data visualization. Our meta-framework is based on data flow diagrams since they have proved their value in simplifying the design of data visualizations. VMetaFlow operates as an abstraction layer that encapsulates and interconnects visualization frameworks in a web-based environment, providing them with interoperability mechanisms. The only requirement is that the visualization framework must be accessible through a JavaScript API. We propose a novel data flow model that allows users to define both interactions between multiple data views and how the data flows between visualization and data processing modules. In contrast with previous data-flow-based frameworks for visualization, we separate the view interactions from data items, broadening the expressiveness of our model and supporting the most common types of multi-view interactions. Our meta-framework allows visualization and data analysis experts to focus their efforts on creating data representations and transformations for their applications, whereas nonexperts can reuse previously developed components to design their applications through a user-friendly interface. We validate our approach through a critical inspection with visualization experts and two case studies. We have carefully selected these case studies to illustrate its capabilities. Finally, we compare our approach with the subset flow model designed for multiple coordinated views.

Combining the object-oriented technology and tree view function of VB6, a graphical control method based on tree view is presented. The information about the algorithm is wrapped in these graphical controls by means of wrapping. The boundary characteristics of the original image are extracted by filtering it based on the deep belief net. The mathematical model of deep belief net and its probability distribution function are established. In this project, the method of combining neural network transformation and sparse representation is proposed to carry out multi-feature fusion of image boundaries, and sigma function is added to the output layer of deep confidence network model to reduce the complexity of iterative training process. By extracting the shape gradient feature of the image boundary, the edge discrete feature is removed and the digital image boundary enhancement is realized. Experiments show that the improved image has better boundary characteristics. Under the same sample conditions, the number of iterative training steps is less, and the image edge processing effect is better than the traditional scheme. © 2024 IEEE.

Computational Thinking and User Interfaces: A Systematic Review

Contribution: This document presents a systematic bibliographic review that demonstrates the need to conduct research on how the user experience impacts the development of computational thinking. Background: In the field of computer science, computational thinking is defined as a method that enhances problem-solving skills, system design, and human behavior understanding. Over the last few decades, several tools have been proposed for the development of computational thinking skills;however, there is no area of study that evaluates the implications or the impact that these types of platforms have on users belonging to any knowledge area. Research Question: Do user interfaces influence the development of computational thinking skills? Methodology: To address this issue, a systematic review of the literature was conducted using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) methodology for analyzing and evaluating scientific publications. Findings: The results show that despite the dearth of literature on the subject, the specific design of a user interface has a significant impact on the development of computational thinking. Bearing the above in mind, it is necessary to conduct research that delves more deeply into the effects caused by the technologies that are used to develop computational thinking, this being a line of research that is worthy of consideration.

Tofu is a toolkit for processing large amounts of images and for tomographic reconstruction. Complex image processing tasks are organized as workflows of individual processing steps. The toolkit is able to reconstruct parallel and cone beam as well as tomographic and laminographic geometries. Many pre- and post-processing algorithms needed for high-quality 3D reconstruction are available, e.g. phase retrieval, ring removal and de-noising. Tofu is optimized for stand-alone GPU workstations on which it achieves reconstruction speed comparable with costly CPU clusters. It automatically utilizes all GPUs in the system and generates 3D reconstruction code with minimal number of instructions given the input geometry (parallel/cone beam, tomography/laminography), hence yielding optimal run-time performance. In order to improve accessibility for researchers with no previous knowledge of programming, tofu contains graphical user interfaces for both optimization of 3D reconstruction parameters and batch processing of data with pre-configured workflows for typical computed tomography reconstruction. The toolkit is open source and extensive documentation is available for both end-users and developers. Thanks to the mentioned features, tofu is suitable for both expert users with specialized image processing needs (e.g. when dealing with data from custom-built computed tomography scanners) and for application-specific end-users who just need to reconstruct their data on off-the-shelf hardware.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a rapidly progressing domain, with solutions ranging from large-scale urban infrastructures shared by all citizens, to smaller scale home-based ecosystems targeted to individuals and families. While the choice of functionality in large ecosystems is the responsibility of respective authorities, in home setups smartness implies individualization of automations. In this context, the notion of end-user programming gains increasing attention as a promising way to allow users develop personalized automations by deploying visual programming tools. Since in an IoT ecosystem devices may be invisible, embedded or hardly locatable, sometimes physically inaccessible, testing becomes very challenging, as bringing physical devices to certain states may be either impractical (e.g. window and door sensors) or overall unsafe (e.g. fire or smoke sensors). For this purpose we implemented a virtual testing environment where trials are executed in a protected runtime, not confined to a particular location, disengaged from the physical ecosystem. All our tools run locally in a typical mobile machine and may operate in standalone mode without connecting to real smart devices. Finally, for automations involving time and scheduling, we introduce a virtual time tool, so that testing is done on demand, not following or waiting the actual pace of physical time.

An artistic analysis model based on sequence cartoon images for scratch

With the development of visual programming languages, researchers pay attention to the automatic evaluation of visual projects. Previous work focus on the code evaluation but ignored another essential part-the visualization results. Scratch is a widely used programming platform, and projects created on it are displayed in the form of cartoon clips. It is valuable to explore the visual aesthetics embodied in these clips to fill the gap in the assessment system. We propose a model that predicts the human view scores of cartoon clips created on Scratch. Our method is divided into two steps to evaluate the aesthetic of the sequence images that compose cartoon clips. First, we train an image classification network to predict the relative aesthetics of individual images. Then we construct an aesthetic space for the sequence image and improve the rating within a specific range. We put forward ScratchGAN to generate a Scratch-cartoon-style aesthetic analysis data set for training the classification network. Experimental results show that our Generative Adversarial Network framework can well transform photos into a Scratch-cartoon style. The single image assessment network can generate predictions that fit human cartoon aesthetic opinions. Our method achieves satisfactory results in the aesthetic evaluation of sequence cartoon images.
