Container orchestration tools supporting infrastructure-as-code allow new forms of collaboration between developers and operatives. Still, their text-based nature permits naive mistakes and is more difficult to read as complexity increases. We can find few examples of low-code approaches for defining the orchestration of containers, and there seems to be a lack of empirical studies showing the benefits and limitations of such approaches. We hypothesize that a complete visual notation for Docker-based orchestrations could reduce the effort, the error rate, and the development time. Therefore, we developed a tool featuring such a visual notation for Docker Compose configurations, and we empirically evaluated it in a controlled experiment with novice developers. The results show a significant reduction in development time and error-proneness when defining Docker Compose files, supporting our hypothesis. The participants also thought the prototype easier to use and useful, and wanted to use it in the future.

In the irrigation sector, Pumphouses play a key role in water intake from the source and distribution to the fields. The use of BIM (Building Information Modelling) in the construction industry enhances productivity, improves workflow quality, and reduces costs. However, some tasks in the modeling process still require automation. This article explores the application of parametric modeling and automation in the design of pumphouses within the irrigation industry. This study uses software applications such as Revit for parametric modeling and Dynamo for visual programming by utilization of Python scripts for the automation of tasks. These developed parametric models help to reduce the amount of work in modeling similar pump houses in the irrigation industry sector and enhance efficiency and precision in the modeling aspects. © 2024 Bharati Vidyapeeth, New Delhi.

Recent technologies such as inter-ledger payments, non-fungible tokens, and smart contracts are all fruited from the ongoing development of Distributed Ledger Technologies. The foreseen trend is that they will play an increasingly visible role in daily life, which will have to be backed by appropriate operational resources. For example, due to increasing demand, smart contracts could soon face a shortage of knowledgeable users and tools to handle them in practice. Widespread smart contract adoption is currently limited by security, usability and costs aspects. Because of a steep learning curve, the handling of smart contracts is currently performed by specialised developers mainly, and most of the research effort is focusing on smart contract security, while other aspects like usability being somewhat neglected. Specific tools would lower the entry barrier, enabling interested non-experts to create smart contracts. In this paper we designed, developed and tested Blockly2Hooks, a solution towards filling this gap even in challenging scenarios such as when the smart contracts are written in an advanced language like C. With the XRP Ledger as a concrete working case, Blockly2Hooks helps interested non-experts from the community to learn smart contracts easily and adopt the technology, through leveraging well-proven teaching methodologies like visual programming Languages, and more specifically, the Blockly visual programming library from Google. The platform was developed and tested and the results are promising to make learning smart contract development smoother.

Smart agriculture applications are a promising path to the future of modern farming. Building smart agriculture applications is a complex undertaking that requires considering different factors, such as the technology that can be used to implement the applications. These factors require advanced skills in software construction, such as handling the distributed setting for smart agriculture applications. As such, implementing smart agriculture applications requires engaging experienced developers with the skills to tackle the issues mentioned above. Low code development tools have risen that domain experts (e.g., agricultural extension workers that give advice to farmers) outside software engineering can use to construct software applications. The low code development tools provide visual programming environments that developers can use intuitively to construct applications. However, the existing low code development tools do not offer support for low infrastructure networking that sensors can use to communicate directly to mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets), computation at the edge, and offline accessibility capabilities at the edge that are crucial for smart agriculture applications. In this paper, we present DisCoPar-K, a low code development tool that supports the properties mentioned above for implementing smart agriculture applications. We show how DisCoPar-K can improve the development of smart agriculture applications by implementing smart agriculture use cases on it.

We present a playful 3D modeling tool that integrates a visual grammar with shaping curves to model forms as parametric functions which can be created and manipulated by novice users. We created a web-based(1), open-source(2), end-to-end design environment for 3D printable forms which were fabricated on clay 3D printers. Users can manipulate forms by directly editing curves which drive transformations to the form's profile as it grows in the z-direction. These transformations can be stacked and composed in a visual postfix language which allows for the creation of parametric designs driven by directly manipulable curves. We pilot tested our program with a small group of ceramicists, artists, and digital fabrication practitioners, which suggested applications in education and art making. PotScript demonstrates an approach to integrating direct manipulation into parametric design which allowed users to create complex forms in small sets of user actions. We aim to make modeling complex 3D forms as approachable as stacking a handful of blocks.

We demonstrate visual Blocks for ML, a visual programming platform that facilitates rapid prototyping of ML-based multimedia applications. As the public version of Rapsai [3], we further integrated large language models and custom APIs into the platform. In this demonstration, we will showcase how to build interactive AI pipelines in a few drag-and-drops, how to perform interactive data augmentation, and how to integrate pipelines into Colabs. In addition, we demonstrate a wide range of community-contributed pipelines in visual Blocks for ML, covering various aspects including interactive graphics, chains of large language models, computer vision, and multi-modal applications. As computer science is integrated into a wider variety of fields, block-based programming languages like Snap!, which assemble code with visual blocks rather than text syntax, are increasingly used to teach computational thinking (CT) to students from diverse backgrounds. Although automated evaluators (autograders) for programming assignments usually focus on runtime efficiency and output accuracy, effective evaluation of a student's CT skills requires assessing coding best practices, such as decomposition, abstraction, and algorithm design. While autograders are commonplace for text languages like Python, we present a machine learning approach to assess how effectively block-based code demonstrates understanding of CT fundamentals. Our dataset consists of Snap! programs written by students new to coding and evaluated by instructors using a CT rubric. We explore how to best transform these programs into low-dimensional features to allow encapsulation and repetition patterns to emerge. Experimentation involves comparing the effectiveness of a suite of clustering models and similarity metrics by analyzing how directly automated feedback correlates to the course staff's manual evaluation. Lastly, we demonstrate the practical application of the autograder in a classroom setting and discuss scalability and feasibility in other domains of CS education.

This paper introduces Tilbot, an open source, easy to use platform for the design of conversational user interfaces. Although many platforms for the creation of conversational agents already exist, they often are closed source and focus mainly on commercial purposes. Tilbot is created as an open source solution that can be hosted on-premises. By focusing primarily on students and researchers, Tilbot stimulates open science research, collaborations, and building a scientific community to create and share best practices and experiences. At the CUI conference, visitors will be able to try out Tilbot, and engage with its original creators to highlight their wishes and brainstorm directions for future development.

The third article in a series of five papers devoted to hydrogen energy digitalization. The article discusses the process of interaction of various digital technologies for building a system of analysis, control and management of elements of a hydrogen liquefier. An example of the division of responsibility between programmable controllers by cryogenic system modules to provide convenient and quick access to data received from measuring instruments at the analog inputs of controllers is given. The article considers software methods for achieving the set goals for the digitalization of the analysis of cryogenic systems at the level of server technologies using visual programming methods.

Defects, or bugs, often form during software development. Identifying the root cause of defects is essential to improve code quality, evaluate testing methods, and support defect prediction. Examples of defect-inducing changes can be found using the SZZ algorithm to trace the textual history of defect-fixing changes back to the defect-inducing changes that they fix in line-based code. The line-based approach of the SZZ method is ineffective for visual code that represents source code graphically rather than textually. In this paper we adapt SZZ for visual code and present the SZZ visual Code (SZZ-VC) algorithm, that finds changes in visual code based on the differences of graphical elements rather than differences of lines to detect defect-inducing changes. We validated the algorithm for an industry-made AAA video game and 20 music visual programming defects across 12 open source projects. Our results show that SZZ-VC is feasible for detecting defects in visual code for 3 different visual programming languages.
