Algot is a visual, live programming language for computer science education that uses a novel implementation of programming by demonstration. Recent experimental studies indicate that Algot is effective for teaching foundational computer science concepts in secondary and tertiary education. In this proposed ITiCSE session, we will give a brief demonstration of how Algot works and how it can be used to implement algorithms that are typically taught in CS1, such as sorting and searching. Our primary intention is to help practitioners in the ITiCSE audience determine if Algot could be appropriate for their own classrooms.

Concatenative programming inherently expresses composition of sub-tasks of a pipeline, but one uncommonly seen model of this paradigm includes all data values inline within the program. A visual environment for editing and evaluating programs in this model would inherently display state in place, and allow for easy tracing of data flow through the program by watching the values literally move as evaluation steps took place. We propose a visual approach for programming in this style, with function calls and data values interleaved on a single "track", with specific concrete arguments always adjacent when a function term is evaluated and various affordances for editing, evaluating, and debugging. We then show how extensions to this model to multiple tracks can ease programming in the model and even make available some more inscrutable programming-language features, such as concurrency and effect systems, in a more accessible way.

For untrained users, programming a robot that interacts with humans in a real-world scenario is challenging to impossible. However, in order to make interactive robots available in a wide range of domains and connect them with other smart devices, it must be possible to change their behavior in a simple and intuitive way. We present a visual programming tool that builds on top of the open-source Node-RED software and enables users to quickly and easily connect robots with Internet of Things (IoT) devices in order to build scenarios that include human interaction. The tool, called Node-(RED)(2) (Node-RED-based Robotics Empowerment Designer) is available online and currently supports the humanoid robot Pepper, but is extendable to other robots with very little effort. We demonstrate two real-world use cases of our tool that include Pepper and IoT devices and evaluate the utility of Node-(RED)(2) via a user study.

BackgroundMany studies have highlighted the positive effects of visual programming instruction (VPI) on students' learning experiences, programming self-efficacy and flow experience. However, there is a notable gap in the research on how these factors specifically impact programming achievement and learning intentions. Our study addresses this gap by focusing on flowchart-based programming-a relatively underexplored area in educational research. To ensure relevance to the educational context, AbilixChart and Ability Storm SK902 were specifically selected for their alignment with the curriculum of the target school, where these tools are widely utilised in both teaching and extracurricular activities. This alignment allowed for a seamless integration of these tools into regular classroom practices after the study's conclusion, ensuring continued application and maximising the study's practical impact. Furthermore, integrating educational robots enhanced student engagement and provided a practical means to evaluate the accuracy of their programming skills. By doing so, our study not only contributes to filling a gap in the literature but also has the potential to influence educational practices by demonstrating the value of incorporating flowchart-based programming and robotics into the *** present study aims to conduct an instructional experiment utilising VPI with flowchart-based programming tools. Beliefs of Undergraduate Mathematics Education Students in a Teacher Education Program about visual programming in Mathematics Classes

In the digital age, the range of digital technologies used in mathematics education grows. Since beliefs are affective-cognitive elements that significantly determine teachers' behavior in the classroom, they are an interesting field of research in mathematics education. A review of previous research has identified different groups of beliefs about the use of digital technologies in mathematics classes. These studies are not focused on specific digital technologies. In an empirical case study that is presented in this paper, the aim was to figure out how beliefs that can be described specifically about the use of visual programming relate to general beliefs about the use of digital technologies in mathematics education. A qualitative content analysis of the reflection journals of seven undergraduate mathematics education students on their work with Scratch, a visual programming environment, in a university seminar led to the formation of ten belief categories about the use of visual programming in mathematics classes. Most of the beliefs are associated with a positive attitude towards visual programming in mathematics education. However, some beliefs could also be identified that refer to the limits and challenges of using visual programming and thus demonstrate rather negative associations. Only a few of the categories identified match the list of belief groups about digital technologies in mathematics education identified in previous research. Some possible reasons for these results are discussed and further research interests in the field of beliefs about the use of digital technologies are suggested.

Foundational multi-modal models have democratized AI access, yet the construction of complex, customizable machine learning pipelines by novice users remains a grand challenge. This paper demonstrates a visual programming system that allows novices to rapidly prototype multimodal AI pipelines. We first conducted a formative study with 58 contributors and collected 236 proposals of multimodal AI pipelines that served various practical needs. We then distilled our findings into a design matrix of primitive nodes for prototyping multimodal AI visual programming pipelines, and implemented a system with 65 nodes. To support users' rapid prototyping experience, we built InstructPipe, an AI assistant based on large language models (LLMs) that allows users to generate a pipeline by writing text-based instructions. We believe InstructPipe enhances novice users onboarding experience of visual programming and the controllability of LLMs by offering non-experts a platform to easily update the generation.

AR applications commonly contain diverse interactions among different AR contents. Creating such applications requires creators to have advanced programming skills for scripting interactive behaviors of AR contents, repeated transferring and adjustment of virtual contents from virtual to physical scenes, testing by traversing between desktop interfaces and target AR scenes, and digitalizing AR contents. Existing immersive tools for prototyping/authoring such interactions are tailored for domain-specific applications. To support programming general interactive behaviors of real object(s)/environment(s) and virtual object(s)/environment(s) for novice AR creators, we propose ProInterAR, an integrated visual programming platform to create immersive AR applications with a tablet and an AR-HMD. Users can construct interaction scenes by creating virtual contents and augmenting real contents from the view of an AR-HMD, script interactive behaviors by stacking blocks from a tablet UI, and then execute and control the interactions in the AR scene. We showcase a wide range of AR application scenarios enabled by ProInterAR, including AR game, AR teaching, sequential animation, AR information visualization, etc. Two usability studies validate that novice AR creators can easily program various desired AR applications using ProInterAR.

programming languages have been trapped in a world of linear textual representations fundamentally unchanged for half a century. Even systems pushing beyond these forms visual languages, projectional language workbenches, and end-user programming tools - largely ape the strictures of stream-of-bytes compilers and confine themselves to the popular paradigms of conventional textual systems. Instead of recreating what succeeded in textual paradigms, newprogramming systems should also be exploring what did not- the confounding, confusing, convoluted approaches that fell by the wayside- with the sorts of direct manipulation, spatial connection, and change over time that textual languages could never match;and they should use their control of presentation to let the user choose the right representation for a piece of code in the moment- and change it. We argue that these two points unlock new frontiers for programming systems, and present preliminary explorations to highlight how multiple-representation environments can lower the pressure on more speculative visual paradigms, to encourage more investigation of this underexamined space.

A visual programming Environment (VPE) promises a shallow learning curve, improved code output performance, immediate visual feedback, rapid functional and graphical prototyping, and citizen development-all without handwritten code. With this work, we put forward novel design considerations for flow-based VPEs, addressing shortcomings of current VPEs discussed in literature. To a certain extent, these considerations are already being implemented in MVP, a Multi-user general-purpose flow-based visual programming environment that is currently under development.

Across many domains (e.g., media/entertainment, mobile apps, fnance, IoT, cybersecurity), there is a growing need for stateful analytics over streams of events to meet key business outcomes. Stateful analytics over event streams entails carefully modeling the sequence, timing, and contextual correlations of events to dynamic attributes. Unfortunately, existing frameworks and languages (e.g., SQL, Flink, Spark) entail signifcant code complexity and expert efort to express such stateful analytics because of their dynamic and stateful nature. Our overarching goal is to simplify and democratize stateful analytics. Through an iterative design and evaluation process including a foundational user study and two rounds of formative evaluations with 15 industry practitioners, we created SEAM-EZ, a no-code visual programming platform for quickly creating and validating stateful metrics. SEAM-EZ features a node-graph editor, interactive tooltips, embedded data views, and auto-suggestion features to facilitate the creation and validation of stateful analytics. We then conducted three real-world case studies of SEAM-EZ with 20 additional practitioners. Our results suggest that practitioners who previously could not or had to spend signifcant efort to create stateful metrics using traditional tools such as SQL or Spark can now easily and quickly create and validate such metrics using SEAM-EZ.
