This paper proposes a methodology to define code-based indicators of the seismic behaviour of existing masonry structures. Given the geometrical information about the structure under investigation, the proposed method performs real-time structural checks according to the EN 1998-1 - "General rules, seismic actions and rules for buildings". Then, modal analysis is performed to assess the structure's dynamic behaviour under investigation and to assist the user in defining retrofit measures. In this study, 103 masonry buildings located in Zagreb are analysed, accounting for the cross-sectional area of load-bearing walls, geometric requirements for shear walls, regularity of plan configuration and its symmetry, torsional effects induced by the distance of the centres of mass and stiffnesses, and modal analysis. The workflow is implemented into the environment offered by Rhino3D and Grasshopper, which allows for the parametric handle of a large set of information through object-oriented scripts, and it can be valuable for both pre-earthquake and post-earthquake assessments of masonry buildings.

By using parametric modelling tools, designers can simulate a high number of design-variants with relatively low effort. visual programming software's like Grasshopper significantly lowers the threshold for beginners to start building parametric models. This paper discusses how using Grasshopper as a parametric design tool can be applied by structural engineers to improve well-informed decision making, when designing a steel structure. Finally, worth mentioning further possibilities parametric design workflows can bring are discussed such as optimisation strategies, optimising sustainability and including structural connections in the parametric model.

The article presents the key aspects of designing and developing a repository of deep neural network models for analyzing and predicting the development of spatial processes based on spatial data. The framework of the system operates on the basis of the MVC pattern, in which the framework is decomposed into modules for working with the system's business logic, its data and graphical interfaces. The characteristics of the developed web interfaces, a module for visual programming for editing of models, an application programming interface for unified interaction with the repository are given. The stated aim of the study determined the structure of the scientific article and the results obtained. The paper describes the functional requirements for the repository as a signific part of software design, presents the developed formalized storage scheme for neural network models, describes the aspects of development of a repository of neural network models and an API of the repository. The developed system allows us to approach the solution of the scientific problem of integrating neural networks with the possibility of their subsequent use to solve design problems of the digital economy.

Algot is a newly developed visual programming language that seeks to bridge the syntax-semantics gap in programming via a novel implementation of programming by demonstration. Preliminary research, which will be presented separately at SIGCSE this year, suggests that Algot may be useful for teaching foundational computer science concepts at both secondary and tertiary levels. In this proposed SIGCSE demo session, attendees will have a chance to interact with Algot and learn about its potential benefits in their own classrooms.

This paper presents the modeling, functionality and implementation of a modern interactive smart home system, which supports several automations for comfortable and secure living, including an energy management subsystem which cooperates with a rooftop photovoltaic installation. The smart home application was developed in the LabVIEW graphical programming environment, being a challenging task since LabVIEW is primarily targeting data collection and analysis as well as complex measurements and trials in laboratory and industrial environments. However, a lot of attractive capabilities it provides for interfacing and control, processing of sensor input, visual (also known as dataflow or diagrammatic) programming and handy visualization promise a much wider adoption and application field. Consequently, it can be applied efficiently and effortlessly in modern home automation and smart home applications.

In this contribution, we present a novel visual programming [VP] framework for the programming of general automated systems in research and industry and its specific application for the programming of complex tasks in micro-optical assembly. The foundation of our principally generic VP framework is a 3D simulation and visualization system in which automated systems are modeled, simulated and controlled as multi-agent systems. By supporting event-, state- and timebased programming techniques for these multi-agent systems in any domain, our VP framework addresses the programming of robotic applications on a fundamental level. We address the particular lack of industrial complexity of earlier VP frameworks by enabling end-users to easily (and visually) implement and develop their own libraries of expert schemes and building blocks.

The paper presents a method for assessing the daylighting of premises, which can be used directly at the stage of architectural and construction design of buildings in building information model (BIM) software complexes. The calculation method is based on the calculation of the sky factor by constructing a solid angle formed by the calculated point and the light opening of the outer wall. These operations are proposed to be performed automatically using visual programming programs that work together with the BIM complexes. Since the considered calculation method is based on the idea of the physical meaning of the daylight factor, it can be used to evaluate the daylighting according to almost any regulatory method. At the same time, all the data necessary for the calculation can be obtained directly from the building information model. The method is universal and can be used both for the calculation of side and top daylighting, considering the surrounding development. The proposed method can also be used as a tool for finding the best design solution for translucent structures of the designed building based on the requirements of thermal protection, daylighting, and safety.

The primary objective of this research is to demonstrate the feasibility of a model-based construction safety assessment system using building information modeling (BIM) and diagnosing accident-prone BIM objects through prevention through design (PtD). Although extensive research has focused on early risk detection and accident predictions in safety, previous approaches have often missed opportunities to identify safety issues arising from design choices. Potential safety risks have been assessed retrospectively by reconstructing safety concerns based on completed design options. To address this gap, this research aims to provide foresight regarding construction safety hazards from the early design stage. First, risks embedded in design decisions are identified by analyzing safety incident reports using text-mining techniques. Then, the relationships among design elements, accident precursors, and risk events are established through if-then relationships. The potential hazards associated with design choices are evaluated by developing and running visual scripts and assessing design model parameters in BIM. This approach enables architects to track construction risks during their design stage, even without extensive onsite construction experience. In addition, owners can evaluate design decisions considering construction safety risks, and contractors can forecast and monitor risky elements, materials, and locations during construction execution. The research outcomes contribute to enhancing safety risk awareness in the early design phases and support efficient and predictive safety management during construction.

Our research is focused on the simplification of parallel programming for distributed memory systems. Our overall goal is to build a unifying framework for creating, debugging, profiling and verifying parallel applications. The key aspect is a visual model inspired by Colored Petri Nets. In this paper, we will present how to use the visual model for debugging and profiling as well. The presented ideas are integrated into our open source tool Kaira.

Computational thinking (CT) is considered a necessary skill for the 21st century. Researchers have increasingly focused on how to effectively enhance students’ CT in programming courses. This study proposes a progressive scaffolding approach with flowcharts and visual programming codes applied to a visual programming course based on an open-source hardware platform to improve CT skills and self-efficacy in middle school students. Forty-five middle school students in grades 7 and 8 participated in this study. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected by using CT tests, scales, and semi-structured interviews. A repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) examined differences in CT skills and self-efficacy on the pre-test, mid-test, and post-test. The results indicated that the progressive scaffolding approach significantly improved middle school students’ CT skills and self-efficacy. These results reveal the effectiveness of the progressive scaffolding approach in improving the computational thinking of middle school students in a visual programming course with an open-source hardware platform, which helps to extend the design of progressive scaffolding.
