programming is a popular subject in education and experts emphasize the importance of teaching programming to the children in the high school or even earlier. In this study, we used robots for teaching programming basics to the high school and college students and observed the effects of different interfaces. We used an educational robot called Thymio-II with Aseba Event Script Language (AESL), which is designed specifically for the Thymio. In this work, our hypothesis is that visual programming interfaces are more successful on learning programming and facilitate the learning with other interfaces and languages. In order to teach programming, as well as the interfaces and the robot features, we created a curriculum applicable to all interfaces. We taught students ages ranging from 15 to 24 using lecture content prepared in the form of video recordings. Students were given 30 min of lectures and at the end of each lecture students were expected to write a program according to predefined requirements. Students were divided to groups using different interfaces and we observed the difference of the learning curves of students for each programming interface. In our tests, we used original English AESL, Turkish version of AESL and a graphical interface called visual programming Language (VPL). We compared the performance of the students using the graphical icon based against the classical text based programming languages.

Life cycle assessment and environmental-based choices at the early design stages: an application using building information modelling

Despite the apparent simplicity of existing BIM-LCA tools, there is a lack of integration with the main BIM software, and the double-effort of design development and parallel simulations is a barrier to their implementation in the design process. Moreover, simplifications on these tools may provide misleading results to the designer. The main aim of this research is to develop an integration interface of manufacturer-based LCA data into a BIM platform by combining applications of existing and consolidated tools (namely, Autodesk Revit and Dynamo, and Microsoft Excel), in order to obtain environmental profiles for decision-making in the initial design stages, requiring less time, effort and ad hoc experts. The methodological procedures were aggregated into the following system development and testing phases: (a) input data organization, (b) creating new parameters on BIM software, (c) visual programming, (d) results analysis for decision-making and (e) simulation of social housing. The results of the developed tool provided complete results automatically, not requiring the designer to make changes in the software or interfaces. Some limitations were identified during development and application, due to the lack of LCA data availability by manufacturers, the complexity of data programming importation and extraction on BIM software for different construction subsystems, and the complexity of LCA results analysis and understanding encountered by non-experts. Regarding the latter, the research concluded that broad knowledge dissemination is still necessary to improve awareness regarding this environmental assessment methodology, in addition to determining the most advantageous environmental performance parameters, as a reference point for comparison.

CLIP 4 Robotics is an icon-based visual programming Language (VPL) that is designed for the novice programmer. The VPL program is written as a series of icons that represent program instruction syntax. The images allow for a wide age range to use the VPL from children to adults. Icons allow for users to feel less intimated with programming than with text-based languages. CLIP 4 Robotics has a user-defined syntax that helps the novice comprehend the language especially children. Icons allow children that have let master reading to program. Example programs are shown that demonstrate the CLIP 4 Robotics language in two different scenarios.

The goal of our research is to create and evaluate a visual and gesture-driven interface to teach computer programming to non-traditional programmers, typically school-age children. By making the interface more enjoyable for young students, we hope to keep students engaged and increase their attention span while learning how to program. Our system combines components from Google's Blockly, a visual block programming language with drag-and-drop puzzle pieces, and Microsoft's Xbox Kinect, which is used to perform skeletal tracking. We created pre-defined gestures to correspond to program functions and available actions, which were compiled from a survey conducted of over 100 grade-school students over three years who had very little to no programming experience before we met. After learning how to use Blockly and having a basic understanding of simple programming logic, the students were asked to create intuitive gestures for common programming constructs, while both standing up using full body movement, and sitting down at a desk, using only their hands. The specific programming constructs included in the survey were loops, conditionals, run program, and undo. To detect the gestures, we have implemented and evaluated a number of gesture matching algorithms. One challenge is that the size, shape, and path of the gestures varied considerably, so the data has to be normalized for any comparisons.

Arts & Bots is an educational program that aims to broaden diversity and participation in technology by integrating arts and crafts with robotics. Arts & Bots is a flexible program that can be integrated into in-school and out-of-school programs in many subject areas. This paper describes the visual programming environment developed for Arts & Bots and its goals of low barriers to entry, classroom compatibility, supporting student acquisition of computational thinking skills, and enabling complex robot behaviors. The authors also compare and contrast the programming environment with other popular visual programming environments, namely Scratch, Alice and LEGO NXT-G.

We introduce a stand-alone, wearable system with full body and finger tracking for first-person virtual reality (VR) avatars. The system does not rely on any external trackers or components. It comprises of a head-mounted display, inertial motion capture suit, VR gloves, and VR backpack PC. Making use of the wearable system and RUIS toolkit [1], we present an example implementation of our vision for physics-based full body avatar interaction. This envisioned interaction involves three elements from the reality-based interaction framework of Jacob et al. [2]: naïve physics, body awareness, and environment awareness. These elements lend common sense affordances within the virtual world and allow users to employ their everyday knowledge of the real world. We argue that when it comes to full body avatar interfaces, it is not only users, but also developers who benefit from utilizing physics simulation as the basis upon which different interaction techniques are built on. This physics-based approach provides intuitive manipulation and locomotion interactions without requiring individually crafted scripts. Our example implementation presents several such interactions. Furthermore, the many interaction techniques emerging from physical simulation are congruous with each other, which promotes user interface consistency. We also introduce the idea of using physics components (colliders, joints, materials, etc.) as 3D user interface building blocks, as opposed to scripting or visual programming.

programming in the large allows composition of processes executing code written using programming in the small. Traditionally, systems supporting programming in the large have included interpreters of OS command languages, but today, with the emergence of collaborative "big data" science, these systems also include cyberinfrastructures, which allow computations to be carried out on remote machines in the "cloud". The rationale for these systems, even the traditional command interpreters, is human-centric computing, as they are designed to support quick, interactive development and execution of process workflows. Some cyberinfrastructures extend this human- centricity by also providing manipulation of visualizations of these workflows. To further increase the human-centricity of these systems, we have started a new project on cyber training - instruction in the use of command languages and visual components of cyberinfrastructures. Our objective is to provide scalable remote awareness of trainees' progress and difficulties, as well as collaborative and automatic resolution of their difficulties. Our current plan is to provide awareness based on a subway workflow metaphor, allow a trainer to collaborate with multiple trainees using a single instance of a command interpreter, and combine research in process and interaction workflows to support automatic help. STEAM-blended programming education is considered to be particularly effective for training computational thinking. In this paper, we aim to develop a web-based learning environment for STEAM-blended programming education. The proposed system can provide the learning materials of JavaScript that can easily carry out STEAM education at educational institutions. To effectively realize STEAM-blended programming education, visual programming is useful. Therefore, first, we will examine the learning effectiveness of visual programming. Next, we will develop a web-based programming learning support system based on "Mathematics" learning with JavaScript. After the above, the concept of STEAM-blended learning material using LEGO Mindstorms EV3 is shown.

Purpose of this study is to design and develop an introductory programming course for higher education level and extract instructional strategies and recommendations. The course was offered as a visual programming course at the Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology in Middle East Technical University. MIT App Inventor (a visual programming environment to develop applications for Android OS) was used in the course. The course was 14 weeks long. Basic concepts of programming were offered through a project and product focused introductory programming course. Design-Based Research methodology was used as the research framework of the study. Under this framework, qualitative data were collected through interviews, observations, and documents. Data were collected iteratively to reshape the design of the course and the instructional strategies until it is appropriate and substantial. Data collection were 2 semester long which included observations throughout the course, interviews at the end of each semester, examination of discussions and products of the students. Results of this study aimed to provide an instructional prescription for the instructors who are to develop an introductory programming course. An effective, efficient, and motivating course design could help both learners and instructors for the first step of programming education which could lead to an advanced level programming education and help students to grasp computational thinking.

Administrators and operators of next generation cities will likely be required to exhibit a good understanding of technical features, data issues, and complex information that, up to few years ago, were quite far from day-to-day administration tasks. In the smart city era, the increased attention to data harvested from the city fosters a more informed approach to city administration, requiring involved operators to drive, direct, and orient technological processes in the city more effectively. Such an increasing need requires tools and platforms that can easily and effectively be controlled by nontechnical people. In this paper, an approach for enabling "easier" composition of real-time data processing pipelines in smart cities is presented, exploiting a visual and block-based design approach, similar to the one adopted in the Scratch programming language for elementary school students. The proposed approach encompasses both a graphical editor and a sound methodology and workflow, to allow city operators to effectively design, develop, test, and deploy their own data processing pipelines. The editor and the workflow are described in the context of a pilot of the ALMANAC European project.
