AI cloud services are available for speech synthesis, speech recognition, image and video recognition, text analysis, and machine learning. School students could use these services in a wide variety of programming projects including voice commands to robots, chatbots, audio games, and vision-based robotics. In doing so they may learn about perception, language, psychology, and the latest empowering technologies. A major obstacle to using these services in schools is that they are technically complex APIs beyond the ability of most school students. The challenge addressed in this paper is how to provide interfaces that are much easier to use and yet still supports most of the functionality of these AI services. We describe the addition of new programming blocks to the Snap! visual programming language [1] that provide easy-to-use interfaces to these services. We have developed new blocks for speech input and output and image recognition. Learning materials have been developed and preliminarily trialed with a small number of children.

Traditional textual programming languages are poorly readable and difficult to learn, creating significant hurdles for practitioners of industry (such as electromechanical engineers). However, Graphical programming Language (GPL), using graphical symbols to construct programs, is becoming increasingly popular as it is intuitive and easy to learn. They have been implemented in many specific areas (such as intelligent buildings, robots, education, etc.), achieving better practical effect. This paper illustrates researches of graphic programming languages in recent years introducing relevant basic concepts, the classification, key technical issues and its applications in intelligent building field. It analyzes the new challenges of current research and outlook to the future development trends of GPL.

Block-based programming languages are successfully being used as an alternative way of teaching introductory programming concepts. The success is in part due to the low barrier of entry and the visual game-like appeal fostering experimentation and creativity. Virtual reality (VR) presents a step further to an even more immersive and engaging experience. In this demo, we showcase our project Cubely, an immersive VR programming environment in which novice programmers solve programming puzzles within a virtual world. the puzzles are similar to *** exercises and solutions to the exercises are assembled by the programmer within the same virtual world using the cubes representing program instructions. The whole environment is templated to a theme of the popular Minecraft video game.

visual programming tools are a great mean for introducing children to programming and to develop a skill set for algorithmic thinking. Collaborative learning and pair programming have demonstrated to have social and learning benefits. However, some of the online programming tools available for children are not designed to allow simultaneous and equitable participation of team members since they allow only for a single control point. In this paper, a preliminary study to cull ideas, insights, and design considerations for a formal programming course for children aged 8-10 using collaborative learning as a pedagogical approach is presented. Three setups were provided: 1) lo-fi prototype, 2) PC, 3) a 46 '' multi-touch display limited by the application to a single touch entry. Children played a "user" role and provided feedback at the end of the sessions. The feedback provided was mixed, regarding their setup preference, but they all agree to like teamwork.

Despite the breadth of related work, enabling end-users of varying technical ability to leverage sensor data to control their Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled installations remains a challenge. This work proposes a unified interface that provides three building blocks to support the end-user configuration of IoT environments: capturing higher-level events in the installation through virtual sensors, construction of automation rules with a visual overview of the current configuration and support for sharing configuration between end-users using a recommendation mechanism.

Automatic verification and validation wizard in web-centred end-user software engineering

This paper addresses one of the major web end-user software engineering (WEUSE) challenges, namely, how to verify and validate software products built using a life cycle enacted by end-user programmers. Few end-user development support tools implement an engineering life cycle adapted to the needs of end users. End users do not have the programming knowledge, training or experience to perform development tasks requiring creativity. Elsewhere we published a life cycle adapted to this challenge. With the support of a. wizard, end-user programmers follow this life cycle and develop rich Internet applications (RIA) to meet specific end-user requirements. However, end-user programmers regard verification and validation activities as being secondary or unnecessary for opportunistic programming tasks. Hence, although the solutions that they develop may satisfy specific requirements, it is impossible to guarantee the quality or the reusability of this software either for this user or for other developments by future end-user programmers. The challenge, then, is to find means of adopting a verification and validation workflow and adding verification and validation activities to the existing WEUSE life cycle. This should not involve users having to make substantial changes to the type of work that they do or to their priorities. In this paper, we set out a verification and validation life cycle supported by a wizard that walks the user through test case-based component, integration and acceptance testing. This wizard is well-aligned with WEUSE's characteristic informality, ambiguity and opportunisticity. Users applying this verification and validation process manage to find bugs and errors that they would otherwise be unable to identify. They also receive instructions for error correction. This assures that their composite applications are of better quality and can be reliably reused. We also report a user study in which users develop web software with and without a wizard to

To validate the concept of an electronic system before thinking of commercial uses, a prototype needs to be developed first. However, technical knowledge in electronics and computer science (CS) is required. Due to the importance of these fields in the world of today, where almost everything is regulated by technology, several initiatives emerged to provide the general public with these knowledge. In this context, there is a focus on the education field where several efforts have been made to lower the entry level to electronics and CS fields, enabling even kids to learn the basic concepts at an early age and have the possibility to concretise their ideas and develop their own prototype. The study presents a solution to facilitate the task of programming electronic gadgets using graphical programming. The authors consider as case study an electronic system built around the IOIO board. The graphical programming interface was created using App Inventor, a web platform for creating android apps. Using the proposed system, several basic and complex gadgets were easily created by young school children with minimal skills in hardware assembly and software programming.

Graphical Access to Medical Expert Systems: III. Design of a Knowledge Acquisition Environment*)

Knowledge acquisition for expert systems typically is a tedious, iterative process involving long hours of consultation between the domain experts and the computer scientists who serve as knowledge engineers. For well-understood domains, however, it may be possible to facilitate the knowledge acquisition process by allowing domain experts to develop and edit a knowledge base directly. Administration of protocol-directed cancer chemotherapy is such a well-understood application area, and a knowledge acquisition system, called OPAL, has been developed for eliciting chemotherapy-protocol knowledge directly from expert oncologists. OPAL’s knowledge acquisition approach is based on the interactive graphics environment available on current generation workstations. The use of graphics improves the interface by reducing typing, avoiding natural language interpretations, and allowing flexibility in entry sequence. The knowledge in OPAL is displayed using an arrangement of hierarchically related, graphical forms. The position of a particular form in the hierarchy defines the context of the knowledge contained in the form. Intelligent editing programs such as OPAL can streamline the knowledge engineering process for highly structured domains requiring repetitive knowledge entry.

GRAPE: a graphical pipeline environment for image analysis in adaptive magnetic resonance imaging

We present a platform, GRAphical Pipeline Environment (GRAPE), to facilitate the development of patient-adaptive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocols. GRAPE is an open-source project implemented in the Qt C++ framework to enable graphical creation, execution, and debugging of real-time image analysis algorithms integrated with the MRI scanner. The platform provides the tools and infrastructure to design new algorithms, and build and execute an array of image analysis routines, and provides a mechanism to include existing analysis libraries, all within a graphical environment. The application of GRAPE is demonstrated in multiple MRI applications, and the software is described in detail for both the user and the developer. GRAPE was successfully used to implement and execute three applications in MRI of the brain, performed on a 3.0-T MRI scanner: (i) a multi-parametric pipeline for segmenting the brain tissue and detecting lesions in multiple sclerosis (MS), (ii) patient-specific optimization of the 3D fluid-attenuated inversion recovery MRI scan parameters to enhance the contrast of brain lesions in MS, and (iii) an algebraic image method for combining two MR images for improved lesion contrast. GRAPE allows graphical development and execution of image analysis algorithms for inline, real-time, and adaptive MRI applications.

This paper is concerned by the fact that the health sector represents a major development challenge for emerging countries. However, it faces many challenges that affect the quality of care provided and makes it almost impossible to guarantee an adequate level of accessibility for all social classes of the population. These reasons motivated us to study a medical control system based on the Internet of Things that could significantly improve the conditions of medical care and ensure effective and effective medical follow-up by automating the process of taking during the consultations and by preserving the information thus obtained for restitution in case of emergency or medical follow-up of the patients. At the end of our study, we were able to define the challenges posed by technological tools in improving the conditions of health structures and to simulate the functioning of the system we designed.
