Intelligent textiles are an interesting area at the intersection of design and technology. Entry hurdles for people like designers are currently high. We present a flow-based visual programming environment in the domain of smart textiles that addresses the aspect of programming. Embedded in a web-portal that involves the whole creation process of wearables, from sensor and actuator placement, sewing patterns to programming and crafting, this approach tries to simplify the abstract process of software development for end users coming from varying disciplines. They are not necessarily competent in this area. We explore the acceptance and capabilities of a visual programming environment by evaluating the complete system in a field test and at a university class for clothing technology. We present some preliminary findings and give first suggestions on how to improve certain aspects of the system architecture and the programming environment itself.

Software plays an increasingly important role in our daily lives. The development of this software is complex and hard to understand by non-professionals. Fundamental knowledge about programming languages and software structure is required to change it. By changing the logical complexity represented in software code in something more intuitively understandable, like graphical elements, even non-professionals can understand and learn to design software. Systems that are inspired by flow-based programming offer an interesting approach to this problem. This paper presents two pattern and five pattern candidates, which are a distillation from practices that are already in use. The presented pattern are Functions as building blocks and Connect building blocks. These pattern are used in established products like Node-Red[3] or n8n[2].

Objective Musculoskeletal modeling and simulation are powerful research and education tools in engineering, neuroscience, and rehabilitation. Interactive musculoskeletal models (IMMs) can be controlled by muscle activity recorded with electromyography (EMG). IMMs are typically coded using textual programming languages that present barriers to understanding for non-experts. The goal of this project was to use a visual programming language (Simulink) to create and test an IMM that is accessible to non-specialists for research and educational purposes. Results The developed IMM allows users to practice a goal-directed task with different control modes (keyboard, mouse, and EMG) and actuator types (muscle model, force generator, and torque generator). Example data were collected using both keyboard and EMG control. One male participant in his early 40's performed a goal-directed task for four sequential trials using each control mode. For EMG control, the participant used a low-cost EMG system with consumer-grade EMG sensors and an Arduino microprocessor. The participant successfully performed the task with both control modes, but the inability to grade muscle model excitation and co-activate antagonist muscles limited performance with keyboard control. The IMM developed for this project serves as a foundation that can be further tailored to specific research and education needs.

Entanglement is a unique phenomenon in quantum physics that describes a correlated relationship in the measurement of a group of spatially separated particles. In the fields of science fiction, game design, art and philosophy, it has inspired the creation of numerous innovative works. We present EntangleVR, a novel method to create entanglement-inspired virtual scenes with the goal to simplify representing this phenomenon in the design of interactive VR games and experiences. By providing a reactive visual programming interface, users can integrate entanglement into their design without requiring prior knowledge of quantum computing or quantum physics. Our system enables fast creation of complex scenes composed of virtual objects with manipulable correlated behaviors.

In recent years, the programming education has become popular in Japan to improve IT skills. In fact, the programming education is spreading to the public education, including the compulsory in elementary schools. However, teachers were unable to provide the smooth support to students due to their unfamiliarity for programming ***, we tried the development of learning support system for teacher using the real-time collection and analysis of log data during learning process. The system provides the teacher each student status (Activity Level) in real-time to support student. This Activity Level was derived from the total number of log data per unit time for each student. In addition, the teacher quickly notices students to support owing to the graphical color of Activity Level. Besides, it is verified to be able to apply the present system to the evaluation method of learning process, as *** believe that this system has the possibility of innovating support and evaluation method for teachers of learning process.

visual programming Languages (VPLs), coupled with the high-level abstractions that are commonplace in visual programming environments, enable users with less technical knowledge to become proficient programmers. However, the lower skill floor required by VPLs also entails that programmers are more likely to not adhere to best practices of software development, producing systems with high technical debt, and thus poor maintainability. Duplicated code is one important example of such technical debt. In fact, we observed that the amount of duplication in the OUTSYSTEMS VPL code bases can reach as high as 39%. Duplicated code detection in text-based programming languages is still an active area of research with important implications regarding software maintainability and evolution. However, to the best of our knowledge, the literature on duplicated code detection for VPLs is very limited. We propose a novel and scalable duplicated code pattern mining algorithm that leverages the visual structure of VPLs in order to not only detect duplicated code, but also high-light duplicated code patterns that explain the reported duplication. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated on a wide range of real-world mobile and web applications developed using OUTSYSTEMS.

This paper presents a comparative study of Algot, a visual programming language designed to bridge the syntax-semantics gap via liveness and programming by demonstration, and the textual programming language Python. We conducted an experimental, within-subjects study with 24 undergraduate computer science students who performed recursion-based tasks in each language while their cognitive load was measured using an electroencephalogram and a validated survey instrument. The students received a brief introduction to Algot, but were all familiar with Python. The students performed significantly better when programming in Algot, but the cognitive load levels were similar according to both instruments. Our results provide evidence that within the domain that was tested, Algot can be quickly learned, and that students do not find it more cognitively demanding than working in a familiar language.

BackgroundMany studies have highlighted the positive effects of visual programming instruction (VPI) on students' learning experiences, programming self-efficacy and flow experience. However, there is a notable gap in the research on how these factors specifically impact programming achievement and learning intentions. Our study addresses this gap by focusing on flowchart-based programming-a relatively underexplored area in educational research. To ensure relevance to the educational context, AbilixChart and Ability Storm SK902 were specifically selected for their alignment with the curriculum of the target school, where these tools are widely utilised in both teaching and extracurricular activities. This alignment allowed for a seamless integration of these tools into regular classroom practices after the study's conclusion, ensuring continued application and maximising the study's practical impact. Furthermore, integrating educational robots enhanced student engagement and provided a practical means to evaluate the accuracy of their programming skills. By doing so, our study not only contributes to filling a gap in the literature but also has the potential to influence educational practices by demonstrating the value of incorporating flowchart-based programming and robotics into the *** present study aims to conduct an instructional experiment utilising VPI with flowchart-based programming tools. This paper presents a web-based platform for construction and execution of data visualization workflow. The environment enables construction of data visualization workflow with the visual programming interface and provides the ability of previewing the visualisation workflow result in real-time. Swarm programming is focused on the design and implementation of algorithms for large-scale systems, such as fleets of robots, ensembles of IoT devices, and sensor networks. Writing algorithms for these systems requires skills and familiarity with programming languages, which can be a barrier for non-expert users. Even if visual programming environments have been proposed for swarm systems, they are often limited to specific platforms or tasks, and do not provide a high-level programming model that can be used to design algorithms for a wide range of swarm systems. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a low-code swarm programming environment, called ScaFi-Blocks, which allows users to design and implement swarm algorithms visually. ScaFi-Blocks is based on the ScaFi aggregate computing framework, which provides a high-level programming model for the design of distributed algorithms. Aggregate computing is based on the concept of field-based coordination, and it allows users to design algorithms by composing simple building blocks, which motivates the design of the proposed artefact. The environment is designed to be user-friendly and to support the design of a wide range of collective applications. In this paper, we present the architecture of ScaFi-Blocks, discuss its features and capabilities, and provide a preliminary evaluation of the programming environment
