In this document we describe the development of a remote lab and two user interfaces for teaching programming and fundamentals of robotics using Arduino boards. One of the interfaces uses visual language to make the experience more attractive for those who are beginning their studies. The second interface provides an environment similar to the original Arduinos one for those users who have some background to use textual programming language. In addition, we present an usability evaluation of the application using visual programming language to obtain a broad feedback mainly in terms of target audiences acceptance and suggestions for improvements. The environment is still an ongoing work, but it is suitable for courses and workshops, especially for institutions with limited resources. Research has shown that Educational Robotics (ER) enhances student performance, interest, engagement and collaboration. However, until now, the adoption of robotics in formal education has remained relatively scarce. Among other causes, this is due to the difficulty of determining the alignment of educational robotic learning activities with the learning outcomes envisioned by the curriculum, as well as their integration with traditional, non-robotics learning activities that are well established in teachers' practices. This work investigates the integration of ER into formal mathematics education, through a quasi-experimental study employing the Thymio robot and Scratch programming to teach geometry to two classes of 15-year-old students, for a total of 26 participants. Three research questions were addressed: (1) Should an ER-based theoretical lecture precede, succeed or replace a traditional theoretical lecture? (2) What is the students' perception of and engagement in the ER-based lecture and exercises? (3) Do the findings differ according to students' prior appreciation of mathematics? The results suggest that ER activities are as valid as traditional ones in helping students grasp the relevant theoretical concepts. Robotics activities seem particularly beneficial during exercise sessions: students freely chose to do exercises that included the robot, rated them as significantly more interesting and useful than their traditional counterparts, and expressed their interest in introducing ER in other mathematics lectures. Finally, results were generally consistent between the students that like and did not like mathematics, suggesting the use of robotics as a means to broaden the number of students engaged in the discipline.

Catroid is a free and open source visual programming system that allows casual and first-time users starting from age eight to develop their own animations and games solely using their Android phones or tablets. Catroid also allows wireless control of external hardware such as Lego Mindstorms robots via Bluetooth, Bluetooth Arduino boards, as well as Parrot's popular AR. Drone quadcopters via Wi-Fi. The project is inspired by Scratch, supported by Google, so far has 170 active developers, is composed of more than 30 subprojects (e.g., a subproject dealing with music composition using audio input sung by users into the microphone), and is growing rapidly. The visual language itself has been renamed to "Catrobat" as non-Android specific versions are under development. Current state (6/2012) of the Catroid system is open beta.

Velo is a learning experience that combines robotics and simulation to help learners understand and apply a simple yet powerful programming model inspired by Braitenberg vehicles. In this model, programs are constructed only by making connections between sensors and actuators. Despite this simplicity, it is possible to achieve complex behaviors similar to that of animals. Velo is designed to be used in a curriculum that aims to help learners not only learn this programming model, but also the process of analyzing an existing (animal) behavior and breaking it down into a form useful for programming.

In the era of ubiquitous Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) systems have emerged as pivotal in advancing societal progress. Yet, their complexity often requires the expertise of professionals, presenting an entry barrier for less-experienced computing practitioners. In the realm of Human-Centered AI (HCAI), ongoing research is developing new approaches to engage users via intuitive interfaces in the design of ML-based systems. For example, visual programming languages (VPLs) and no-code platforms offer user-friendly experiences by avoiding complex computational operations. However, literature on VPL-based tools for novices reveals a gap: many tools offer limited interpretability approaches or are overly complex for easy customization. To address this gap, we developed the PyFlowML prototype, an open-source, flow-based programming tool with a focus on Explainable AI (XAI). This study aims to set a benchmark in the field by comparing PyFlowML with KNIME, a similar tool known for its usability among domain specialists. Our results show that domain specialists perceive flow-based language tools as valuable. This study highlights the potential of VPL-based tools to make the design of trustworthy ML-based systems more inclusive, thereby contributing to the advancement of AI democratization.

The purpose of this paper is to present a project that provides a framework to build educational robotics kit with low cost components and interface the kit with a visual programming language. A robotics kit is inaccessible to many third world schools due to its high cost. This paper provides a "Do It Yourself" (DIY) approach to produce graphically programmable robots with low cost components. The framework consists of the low-cost hardware components, back-end software and the visual programming editor to interface the hardware. The editor consists of interlocking graphical blocks to represent programming concepts such as Variables, Logical expressions, Conditions, Loops, Lists, Event Listeners, Parallel programming and many more. Using this editor a student can graphically reprogram the robotics kit firmware and manipulate it. It allows young adults to apply programming concepts without having to worry about the syntax and makes programming easy and fun.

Utilize the programming environment at present, it's effortless for us to design intuitionistic visual program. It only implements the visualization of programming ending. The process of programming is not fully visualization and it's not visual programming language in its true sense. According to the related research on visual programming languages in the past, the language is designed for special area or education, which is of pertinence and ordinary. If the programming language is made up of a series of graphic expressions it's under the name of visual programming language. So the goal of our research is to construct a kind of visual programming language which is propitious to program in graphic components, is convenient for comprehension to programmers and nonprogrammer and the most important is it can reduce error rate which is caused by former textual input and recede the workload in the course of lexical analysis and semantic parsing.

In recent years, due to the expected exponential growth of Internet of Things (IoT), there is huge demand for adapting IoT in many key situations like day to day life, Industries, Healthcare systems, education systems, smart cites, smart grid, etc. It is also clearly evident that, IoT technology generates huge demand for job opportunities and revenues particularly in the Information technology sector. Thus, there is definite raising demand for IoT professionals. This aspect is highly motivating to teach IoT course as one the major courses for undergraduate engineering students at Universities. IoT is an amalgamation of hardware and software, the students should be exposed to learn and harness their skills in both concepts and technology thoroughly. In this paper, we proposed once such state-of-art laboratory based IoT course named IoT workshop and is offered for the undergraduate engineering students. In this paper, we discuss our experience to highlight need for IoT course, using Node-RED visual programming language, course content, learning objectives, assessment of course, and project ideas.

Effect of Scratch on computational thinking skills of Chinese primary school students

This study aimed to analyze the effects of Scratch language learning on the computational thinking skills (creativity, algorithmic thinking, cooperativity, critical thinking, and problem solving) of primary school students. We conducted an experiment with 336 Chinese primary students studying in fifth grade. At the beginning of the experiment, all students were required to complete the Computational Thinking Scale (CTS) to measure their CT skills. During the 5 weeks of lesson learning, all students were taught with the same instruction strategy and curriculum. Finally, they appeared for the CTS test again. The research findings indicate that there was a significant difference in the skills of creativity, cooperativity, and critical thinking. However, in this study, Scratch learning did not cause any significant differences in the problem-solving and algorithmic thinking skills of primary school students. Moreover, in both tests, while the girls scored lower than the boys in most skills, they were at the same significance level in most cases. Finally, we suggest providing students with more meaningful programming problems to practice and encourage teachers to combine Scratch with other subjects, such as mathematics and robotic programming.

Entity relation (ERA) diagrams are use in the stage of conceptual design of database. Geographic information systems are often based on a geodatabase where the spatial data and attribute data are stored together. Software ArcGIS Diagrammer is used for the design of ArcGIS geodatabase. A set of graphical symbol is used for geodatabase design. The symbols are boxes with color fill. Arrow connectors join some elements. The aesthetic, cognitive and perceptual quality of geodatabase diagram is important for comprehension by user. The perception depends on several aspects. A scientific method called the Physics of Notation was suggested by Daniel Moody. The theory of visual notation design is focused on the physical (perceptual) properties of notations rather than their logical (semantic) properties [1]. Some of the nine principles from the Physics of Notations will be applied for ArcGIS Diagrammer. The main aim of this article is an evaluation of visual notation in ArcGIS Diagrammer.
