Electron and X-ray diffractometry visualize atoms in severely stressed single-crystal silicon and help analyze the resulting phase transformations. Massively parallel computers simulate both diffraction techniques. We study these phase transitions with a number of simulation techniques. We calculate the position of the atoms in the material during the process and display atomic images of the crystal structure as a function of time. Simulated diffraction patterns enable us to follow structural transformations more easily. In addition, we have developed several diagnostic imaging techniques that aid the analysis of phase transformations: the pair-correlation function, bar-code plotting, ring statistics and subvolume visualization

This paper presents the method used to efficiently identify and map previously unknown subsurface remains in a steep, forested, and mostly unexplored area, within the archaeological site of Porolissum, Romania. The remains are part of the defensive system of the ancient Roman Empire frontiers (Roman limes). The complementary use of high-resolution airborne laser scanning derived digital terrain model and visualization techniques enabled the detection of 79 new, subsurface archaeological structures, most of which were confirmed by ground inspection to be key elements of the limes. The best performing methods, achieving detection of the maximum visible extent for over 75% of all features were in descending order: principal component analysis, simple local-relief model, sky-view factor, and positive openness. Analytical hill-shading, slope, negative openness, and hill-shading had a larger proportion of partial detections. The position of these ancient remains supports the hypothesis that this area was extensively deforested, for strategic purposes, during the Roman period. Employing one of the latest remote sensing techniques, we have identified the location of previously unknown, buried ancient structures of the Roman limes in Dacia Province, an essential step for compiling a database necessary for enlisting this Roman limes sector on the World Heritage List.

Contemporary engineering information system designs are generally interdisciplinary and exceedingly complex. As a result, managing and understanding these systems collaboratively poses unnecessary challenges to end users. In this research, we studied and developed visualization and collaboration techniques to facilitate comprehension and management of engineering information systems with great complexity. Existing commercial and research visualization developments only address applications in specific domains. This paper introduces two techniques applicable to large-scale models across various domains and integrated within a web-based modeling platform, WebGME. The techniques presented are 1) domain-specific visualization that allows representation of components in each domain with conventional or meaningful icons, and 2) model connectivity abstraction that allows domain independent, context-aware abstraction of model connections.

Designing highly realistic and immersive virtual reality (VR) environments has become crucial for enhancing the user experience within human-machine interactions. However, there is limited research regarding the utilization, impact, and influence of different visualization techniques in VR concerning cognition and behavior. This experimental study compares two scenarios: a low-realism (LR) scenario with non-diegetic visual elements and a high-realism (HR) scenario with diegetic visual elements. The experimental context pertains to young jobseekers' training and skills development in the construction industry. The findings indicate that an HR scenario contributes to enhancing memory but may reduce perceived usability if a proper feedback system related to diegetic elements is not implemented. Furthermore, an LR scenario can foster effective immersion if the diegetic narrative remains consistent and a high level of interaction is present, enabling a more inclusive design and making learning more accessible to individuals requiring a lower level of detail. Despite the limitation of a limited number of participants, the results aim to contribute to the establishment of visualization strategies in VR for vocational education and training.

A digital twin (DT) is a real-time digital copy of a physical entity. The interest in DTs has been an increasing trend in recent years in academia as well as industry, which includes ecosystems. DTs of ecosystems replicate the composition, behaviour, and functionality of real ecosystems, providing several advantages. With the highlighted importance of DTs in ecosystems, selecting the appropriate visualization techniques and tools becomes *** techniques play an important role in DT systems for presenting the digital representation of the physical system and for supporting users to effectively explore the information of DTs. During the past decades, a large volume of work has been conducted in the context of scientific visualization;however, no overview exists that summarizes visualization techniques and tools of DTs of ecosystems. Therefore, this paper aims to fill this ***, a systematic literature review is conducted to consolidate data types, visualization techniques, and tools that are used for DTs and ecosystems. To structure the consolidated visualization techniques the domains of application are identified. Requirements and challenges for DTs are identified similarly to assess the suitability of each visualization tool. Second, a selection tool is constructed using the results of the review such that a user can quickly assess what visualization technique and tool to select. The approach is applied to a use case. © 2023 IEEE.

Heatlines and other visualization techniques for confined heat transfer systems

Efficient visualization techniques are required to understand the flow physics for any numerical simulation. For convective heat transfer problems, most widely used techniques to visualize the fluid flow and heat transfer are streamlines and isotherms respectively. These methods are not sufficient to address the degrees of complexity associated with the complicated convective problems. Thus, different visualization techniques have been developed to represent the results depending on the problem. In this article, an effort has been made to collate visualization techniques in literature for convective heat transfer system like, heatlines, energy streamlines, energy flux vectors, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), Poincare map etc. The fundamentals of different techniques are briefly discussed, applications of these techniques are shown with proper examples. The usefulness and limitations of these techniques are also discussed. Heatline is found to be the best visualization tool for two dimensional steady situations. However, in 3D and transient scenario Lagrangian approach or POD can be used. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A systematic review of software architecture visualization techniques

Context: Given the increased interest in using visualization techniques (VTs) to help communicate and understand software architecture (SA) of large scale complex systems, several VTs and tools have been reported to represent architectural elements (such as architecture design, architectural patterns, and architectural design decisions). However, there is no attempt to systematically review and classify the VTs and associated tools reported for SA, and how they have been assessed and applied. Objective: This work aimed at systematically reviewing the literature on software architecture visualization to develop a classification of VTs in SA, analyze the level of reported evidence and the use of different VTs for representing SA in different application domains, and identify the gaps for future research in the area. Method: We used systematic literature review (SLR) method of the evidence-based software engineering (EBSE) for reviewing the literature on VTs for SA. We used both manual and automatic search strategies for searching the relevant papers published between 1 February 1999 and 1 July 2011. Results: We selected 53 papers from the initially retrieved 23,056 articles for data extraction, analysis, and synthesis based on pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results from the data analysis enabled us to classify the identified VTs into four types based on the usage popularity: graph-based, notation-based, matrix-based, and metaphor-based VTs. The VTs in SA are mostly used for architecture recovery and architectural evolution activities. We have also identified ten purposes of using VTs in SA. Our results also revealed that VTs in SA have been applied to a wide range of application domains, among which "graphics software" and "distributed system" have received the most attention. Design and Evaluation of visualization techniques of Off-Screen and Occluded Targets in Virtual Reality Environments

This research explores the design and evaluation of visualization techniques of targets that reside outside of users' view and/or are occluded by other elements within a virtual reality environment (VE). We first compare four techniques (3DWedge, 3DArrow, 3DMinimap, and Radar) that use different types of visual elements to provide direction and distance information of targets. To give structure to their evaluation, we also develop a framework of four tasks (one for direction and three for distance) and their assessment criteria. The results of the first study show that 3DWedge is the best-performing and most usable technique. However, all techniques, including 3DWedge, have poor performance in dense scenarios with a large number of targets. To improve support in dense scenarios, a fifth technique, 3DWedge+, is developed by using 3DWedge as its foundation and including additional visual elements that are derived from the other three techniques which are shown to be useful. A second study is conducted to evaluate the performance of 3DWedge+ in relation to the other techniques. The results show that both 3DWedge and 3DWedge+ are significantly better in distinguishing user-to-target distance and that 3DWedge+ is particularly suitable for dense scenarios. Based on these results, we provide a set of recommendations for the design of visualization techniques of off-screen and occluded targets in 3D VE.

The Impact of Focus and Context visualization techniques on Depth Perception in Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Displays

Estimating the depth of virtual content has proven to be a challenging task in Augmented Reality (AR) applications. Existing studies have shown that the visual system makes use of multiple depth cues to infer the distance of objects, occlusion being one of the most important ones. The ability to generate appropriate occlusions becomes particularly important for AR applications that require the visualization of augmented objects placed below a real surface. Examples of these applications are medical scenarios in which the visualization of anatomical information needs to be observed within the patient's body. In this regard, existing works have proposed several focus and context (F+C) approaches to aid users in visualizing this content using Video See-Through (VST) Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs). However, the implementation of these approaches in Optical See-Through (OST) HMDs remains an open question due to the additive characteristics of the display technology. In this article, we, for the first time, design and conduct a user study that compares depth estimation between VST and OST HMDs using existing in-situ visualization methods. Our results show that these visualizations cannot be directly transferred to OST displays without increasing error in depth perception tasks. To tackle this gap, we perform a structured decomposition of the visual properties of AR F+C methods to find best-performing combinations. We propose the use of chromatic shadows and hatching approaches transferred from computer graphics. In a second study, we perform a factorized analysis of these combinations, showing that varying the shading type and using colored shadows can lead to better depth estimation when using OST HMDs.

This paper compares efficiency of two and three-dimensional visualization techniques which are developed for representation of spatial content of an urban historic site. The aim of this paper is to measure users' perception regarding the performance of these visualization techniques. Methodology is based on a questionnaire which is gathering the user's responses regarding comprehension and perception level of the case area's characteristics. The case study, which was held in Zeyrek urban historic site, comprises the application of 2D and 3D figures and schemes in order to represent the site characteristics, survey and analysis and proposals. As the fundamental finding of the study, it is concluded that spatial attributes and characteristics in 3D urban models are better defined than in 2D mapping technique. The study indicates that orientation sense of users and cognition of the townscape characteristics are the most prominent components of 3D urban model, generated within this case study.
