Point-spread function engineering (PSF), achieved by placing a phase mask at the pupil plane of the imaging lens to encode the wavefront emerging from an imaging system, can be employed to reduce the impact of spherical aberration (SA) in 3D microscopy. In a previous study, the effect of SA on a confocal scanning microscope using a squared cubic phase mask (SQUBIC) was investigated using computer simulations. Here the effect of the SQUBIC design parameter on the insensitivity of the engineered PSF to SA is investigated using a metric based on the second-order moment of the axial variability of the PSF. We show that it is possible to find the optimum SQUBIC for the insensitization to SA.

The insertion of a suitably designed phase plate in the pupil of an imaging system makes it possible to encode the depth dimension of an extended three-dimensional scene by means of an approximately shift-invariant PSF. The so-encoded image can then be deblurred digitally by standard image recovery algorithms to recoup the depth dependent detail of the original scene. A similar strategy can be adopted to compensate for certain monochromatic aberrations of the system. Here we consider two approaches to optimizing the design of the phase plate that are somewhat complementary-one based on Fisher information that. attempts to reduce the sensitivity of the phase encoded image to misfocus and the other based on a minimax formulation of the sum of singular values of the system blurring matrix that attempts to maximize the resolution in the final image. Comparisons of these two optimization approaches are discussed. Our preliminary demonstration of the use of such pupil-phase engineering to successfully control system aberrations particularly spherical aberration, is also presented.

A long wave infrared (LWIR) computational imaging system has been designed and fabricated that has a decreased hyperfocal distance compared to traditional optics. Through the combination of aspheric optics and signal processing the near point with clear imagery has been reduced from 50m to less than 10m. Both systems deliver high quality imaging when the object is at infinity. The decrease in the hyperfocal distance was realized though the use of wavefront coding, a technology where all system components are jointly optimized. The system components include the optics, detector and signal processing. System optimization is used with optical/digital constraints such as manufacturability, cost, signal processing architecture, FPA characteristics, etc. Through a special design of the system's optical phase, the system becomes invariant to the aberrations that traditionally limit the effective operational range. In the process of becoming invariant, the specialized phase creates a uniform blur across the detected image. Signal processing is applied to remove the blur, resulting in a high quality image. In this paper imagery from the wavefront Coded system is described and compared to traditional imagery.

A novel and successful optical-digital approach for removing certain aberrations in imaging systems involves placing an optical mask between an image-recording device and an object to encode the wavefront phase before the image is recorded, followed by digital image deconvolution to decode the phase. We have observed that when appropriately engineered, such an optical mask can also act as a form of preconditioner for certain deconvolution algorithms. It can boost information in the signal before it is recorded well above the noise level, leveraging digital restorations of very high quality. In this paper, we 1) examine the influence that a phase mask has on the incoming signal and how it subsequently affects the performance of restoration algorithms, and 2) explore the design of optical masks, a difficult nonlinear optimization problem with multiple design parameters, for removing certain aberrations and for maximizing restorability and information in recorded images.

The traditional method of improving the depth-of-field of an imaging system is to stop down the aperture. Light gathering power and resolution are lost We present a modified CCD camera system which achieves exceptionally high depth-of-field without stopping down the aperture. A special phase mask placed near the lens modifies the incoming wavefront making it nearly invariant to the state of focus. The resulting image has reduced contrast but still contains complete object information. Straightforward post-processing is then used regain image contrast. In effect, we trade image SNR instead of aperture size to obtain high depth-of-field.

Conventional optical system design enhances the resolution of incoherent imaging systems by optical-only manipulations or some type of post-processing of an image that has been already formed. This paper gives a brief introduction to a modem method, which employs an aspherical phase filter to alter the transmitted wavefront in such a way that the optical system has a high tolerance to aberrations. As reported in earlier work, this approach alleviates the defocus and its related aberrations whilst maintaining the diffraction-limited resolution for incoherent imaging systems. We propose to explore the control of primary aberration through the use of radially symmetric phase filters and this include spherical aberration, coma, astigmatism, and Petzval field curvature aberration. This method offers the potential to implement diffraction-limited imaging systems using simple and low-cost one- or two-element lenses.

Artificial compound-eye optics have been used for three-dimensional information acquisition and display. It also enables us to realize a diversity of coded imaging process in each elemental optics. In this talk, we introduce our single-shot compound-eye imaging system to observe multi-dimensional information including depth, spectrum, and polarization based on compressive sensing. Furthermore it is applicable to increase the dynamic range and field-of-view. We also demonstrate an extended depth-of-field (DOF) cameras based on compound-eye optics. These extended DOF cameras physically or computationally implement phase modulations to increase the focusing range.

Since the concept of wavefront coding was proposed, many types of phase masks have been reported to extend the depth-of-field of imaging system. Unfortunately there exist some unpleasant image artifacts in the final decoded images, especially for asymmetric phas(1)e masks. In this paper, we illustrate a technique that involve shifting a phase mask laterally in pupil plane to introduce axial defocus to an imaging system, which can further be used to determine the defocus map according to the amount of image artifacts. This eventually enables recovery of extended depth-of-filed, artifacts-free decoded images together with a range map. Theoretical analyses and experimental results indicate the effectiveness of this method.

The design of modem imaging systems is intricately concerned with the control of optical aberrations in systems that can be manufactured at acceptable cost and with acceptable manufacturing tolerances. Traditionally this involves a multi-parameter optimisation of the lens optics to achieve acceptable image quality at the detector. There is increasing interest in a more generalised approach whereby digital image processing is incorporated into the design process and the performance metric to be optimised is quality of the image at the output of the image processor. This introduces the possibility of manipulating the optical transfer function of the optics such that the overall sensitivity of the imaging system to optical aberrations is reduced. Although these hybrid optical/digital techniques, sometimes referred as wavefront coding, have on occasion been presented as a panacea, it is more realistic to consider them as an additional parameter in the optimisation process. We will discuss the trade-offs involved in the application of wavefront coding to low-cost imaging systems for use in the thermal infrared and visible imaging systems, showing how very useful performance enhancements can be achieved in practical systems.
