The utilization of a telescope with a large single aperture is limited by the manufacturing technique, cost, volume and weight of a monolithic mirror. In order to solve these problems, the technology of the segmented synthetic aperture was introduced. The primary mirror of a large segmented synthetic aperture telescope consists of several segmented mirrors, whose misalignment errors make the wavefront change drastically and influence the MTF of the optical system badly. The wavefront coding technology (WFC) is an innovative technology that joints the optical design and digital image processing together. By adding a phase mask close to the pupil of an optical system and modulating the wavefront, the WFC system becomes very insensitive to defocus and other aberrations based on defocus. The theoretical analysis of characteristics of the WFC system was done in the form of PSF. The application of WFC to a segmented three mirror anastigmat (TMA) was presented. A space telescope with an effective focal length as 40m, a F number as 10, a field of view as 0.5 degrees x0.05 degrees was designed, whose primary mirror consisted of seven segmented mirrors. The influence of defocus and misalignment errors on the telescope was discussed. The imaging process of the WFC system and following image restoration were simulated. As a result, sharp images were obtained and the large segmented synthetic aperture telescope had looser misalignment tolerance and extended depth of focus.

As the light travels through the wavefront coding (WFC) system, the modulation transfer function(MTF) of the WFC system was very low, consequently the intermediate blurred image has been received by the detector. However, there is no zero point in the passband of the MTF of the WFC imaging system, and the target information cannot be saved very well. An appropriate filter can be used to restore the sampled intermediate image. The noise of the system is enlarged in the restoration process where the signal be amplified by the filter, and the signal to noise ratio(SNR) of the image is reduced. In order to solve the above issues, an improved algorithm has been proposed in this paper. The noise is controlled by the wavelet in the reconstruction process, and the intermediate blurred image is restored by the wiener filter algorithm with a prior knowledge of the degradation function. Thus, the wavelet de-noising and wiener filter algorithm are combined to restore the middle blurred image of the WFC system. Finally, the restoration image with the diffraction limit level is acquired in image detail restoration and noise control.

In wavefront coding optical system, with the traditional cubic mask plate (CMP) which owns several extension times of depth of focus (DOF), it is difficult to manufacture. With the symmetrical surface type mask plate which can be machine relatively easily, but it presents small multiples of the extension of DOF. In this paper, it makes a presentation of mask plate design by user defined surface(UDS) type where it has an easy mechanical process and several multiples of extension of DOF. It presents the analytic expression by calculation and its DLL data file which is adapted to ZEMAX. It also performs a simulation experiment based on the three mirror Cassegrain(TMC) wavefront system. The experiment results indicate that instead of the traditional mask plate, the UDS surface mask plate can obtain a larger ratio of extension of DOF and increase the valuable types of mask plate surfaces. What is more, it decreases the surface mechanical difficulty compared to the asymmetrical surface mask plate. The type of UDS surface has the unique design and the convenience manufacturing, which is of great value in both application and research.

wavefront coding (WFC) is a prosperous technology for extending depth of field (DOF) in the incoherent imaging system. Digital recovery of the WFC technique is a classical ill-conditioned problem by removing the blurring effect and suppressing the noise. Traditional approaches relying on image heuristics suffer from high frequency noise amplification and processing artifacts. This paper investigates a general framework of neural networks for restoring images in WFC. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt for applying convolutional networks in WFC. The blur and additive noise are considered simultaneously. Two solutions respectively exploiting fully convolutional networks (FCN) and conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (CGAN) are presented. The FCN based on minimizing the mean squared reconstruction error (MSE) in pixel space gets high PSNR. On the other side, the CGAN based on perceptual loss optimization criterion retrieves more textures. We conduct comparison experiments to demonstrate the performance at different noise levels from the training configuration. We also reveal the image quality on non-natural test target image and defocused situation. The results indicate that the proposed networks outperform traditional approaches for restoring high frequency details and suppressing noise effectively.

Artefacts and noise degrade the decoded image of a wavefront coding infrared imaging system, which usually results in the decoded image being inferior to the in-focus infrared image of a conventional infrared imaging system. The previous letter showed that the decoded image fell behind the in-focus infrared image. For comparison, a bar target experiment at temperature of +20 degrees C and two groups of outdoor experiments at temperatures of +28 degrees C and +70 degrees C are respectively conducted. Experimental results prove that a wavefront coding infrared imaging system can achieve the decoded image being approximating to its corresponding in-focus infrared image.

wavefront coding enables conventional optical imaging systems to operate over an extended depth of field/focus by modifying the light field using a specially designed phase mask. Different phase masks can be used to alter the transmitted wavefront of the optical system which may result in different performances in terms of the capability of the depth-of-focus extension, aberration suppression and the process of imaging acquirement. In this paper, we present a comparative study on the performances of two major different categories of the phase mask, i.e., rotational symmetric and asymmetric type phase masks. Three different types of phase masks that are of cubic, quartic, and logarithmic phase profile are investigated. Fabrication and metrology of a cubic mask is conducted and a full cycle of imaging process including the image coding and decoding is performed.

wavefront coding can extend the depth of field of traditional optical system by inserting a phase mask into the pupil plane. In this paper, the point spread function (PSF) of wavefront coding system with annular aperture are analyzed. Stationary phase method and fast Fourier transform (FFT) method are used to compute the diffraction integral respectively. The OTF invariance is analyzed for the annular aperture with cubic phase mask under different obscuration ratio. With these analysis results, a wavefront coding system using Maksutov-Cassegrain configuration is designed finally. It is an F/8.21 catadioptric system with annular aperture, and its focal length is 821mm. The strength of the cubic phase mask is optimized with user-defined operand in Zemax. The Wiener filtering algorithm is used to restore the images and the numerical simulation proves the validity of the design.

wavefront coding (WFC) is a hybrid technology designed to increase depth of field of conventional optics. The goal of our research is to apply this technology to the short-focus and ultra-wide-angle lens which suffers from the aberration related with large field of view (FOV) such as coma and astigmatism. WFC can also be used to compensate for other aberration which is sensitive to the FOV. Ultra-wide-angle lens has a little depth of focus because it has small F number and short-focus. We design a hybrid lens combing WFC with the ultra-wide-angle lens. The full FOV and relative aperture of the final design are up to170 degrees and 1/1.8 respectively. The focal length is 2 mm. We adopt the cubic phase mask (CPM) in the design. The conventional design will have a wide variation of the point spread function (PSF) across the FOV and it is very sensitive with the variation of the FOV. The new design we obtain the PSF is nearly invariant over the whole FOV. But the result of the design also shows the little difference between the horizontal and vertical length of the PSF. We analyze that the CPM is non-symmetric phase mask and the FOV is so large, which will generate variation in the final image quality. For that reason, we apply a new method to avoid that happened. We try to make the rays incident on the CPM with small angle and decrease the deformation of the PSF. The experimental result shows the new method to optimize the CPM is fit for the ultra-wide-angle lens. The research above will be a helpful instruction to design the ultra-wide-angle lens with WFC.

wavefront coding technique as a means of athermalization applied to infrared imaging system, the design of phase plate is the key to system performance. This paper apply the externally compiled programs of ZEMAX to the optimization of phase mask in the normal optical design process, namely defining the evaluation function of wavefront coding system based on the consistency of modulation transfer function (MTF) and improving the speed of optimization by means of the introduction of the mathematical software. User write an external program which computes the evaluation function on account of the powerful computing feature of the mathematical software in order to find the optimal parameters of phase mask, and accelerate convergence through generic algorithm (GA), then use dynamic data exchange (DDE) interface between ZEMAX and mathematical software to realize high-speed data exchanging. The optimization of the rotational symmetric phase mask and the cubic phase mask have been completed by this method, the depth of focus increases nearly 3 times by inserting the rotational symmetric phase mask, while the other system with cubic phase mask can be increased to 10 times, the consistency of MTF decrease obviously, the maximum operating temperature of optimized system range between -40 degrees C-60 degrees C. Results show that this optimization method can be more convenient to define some unconventional optimization goals and fleetly to optimize optical system with special properties due to its externally compiled function and DDE, there will be greater significance for the optimization of unconventional optical system.

In this work we explore the use of the wavefront coding technique for obtaining high resolution images of the retina of human eyes. The numerical analysis pretends to show the robustness of the technique under changes in pupil diameter and wavefront shape including intersubject and intrasubject variability, using always the same restoration filter or image decoder. The results show that it is possible to obtain high resolution images under different ocular aberrations and pupil diameters with the same decoder, opening the possibility of real time high resolution images with this low-cost and robust technique.
