An iterated denoising and fusion method is presented to improve the image quality of wavelet-based coding. Firstly, iterated image denoising is used to reduce ringing and staircase noise along curving edges and improve edge regularity. Then, we adopt wavelet fusion method to enhance image edges, protect non-edge regions and decrease blurring artifacts during the process of denoising. Experimental results have shown that the proposed scheme is capable of improving both the subjective and the objective performance of wavelet decoders, such as JPEG2000 and SPIHT.

In this paper, we present a novel design of a wavelet-based video coding algorithm within a conventional hybrid framework of temporal motion-compensated prediction and transform coding. Our proposed algorithm involves the incorporation of multi-frame motion compensation as an effective means of improving the quality of the temporal prediction. In addition, we follow the rate-distortion optimizing strategy of using a Lagrangian cost function to discriminate between different decisions in the video encoding process. Finally, we demonstrate that context-based adaptive arithmetic coding is a key element for fast adaptation and high coding efficiency. The combination of overlapped block motion compensation and frame-based transform coding enables blocking-artifact free and hence subjectively more pleasing video. In comparison with a highly optimized MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile coder, our proposed scheme provides significant performance gains in objective quality of 2.0-3.5 dB PSNR.

We propose a rate-distortion optimized framework for estimating illumination changes (lighting variations, fade in/out effects) in a highly scalable coding system. Illumination variations are realized using multiplicative factors in the image domain and are estimated considering the coding cost of the illumination field and input frames which are first subject to a temporal Lifting-based Illumination Adaptive Transform (LIAT). The coding cost is modelled by an l(1)-norm optimization problem which is derived to approximate a quadratic-log function which emerges from rate-distortion considerations. The optimization problem is solved using ADMM. The proposed solution works the same or better than a mesh-based approach proposed in prior work, where sparsity was controlled by explicitly choosing mesh parameters. In the compression-inspired formulation presented here, sparsity is discovered automatically through the solution of a convex program that depends only on a target rate-distortion operating point.

wavelet-based moving-picture coding using shift-invariant motion estimation in wavelet domain

The shift-variant property of the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) makes the motion estimation and compensation inefficient in the wavelet domain. In order to overcome the shift-variant property of the DWT, a low-band-shift (LBS) method has been developed. Using the LBS method in the wavelet domain, two motion estimation and compensation schemes are developed and evaluated. One scheme is the motion estimation and compensation using the LBS method with wavelet-block basis and the other is with band-by-band basis. Both schemes using the LBS method have superior performances to the conventional motion estimation methods in spatial domain or wavelet domain with respect to peak-noise-to-signal ratio (PSNR). The experiment results show that the proposed schemes have PSNR improvements of above 1.0 dB to the full-search method in spatial domain. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes an efficient wavelet-based coding scheme with fine grain scalability, where the base layer is encoded with a novel designed of wavelet-based coder, and the enhancement layer is encoded with progressive fine granularity scalable (PFGS) coding. This algorithm involves multi-frame motion compensation, rate-distortion optimizing strategy with Lagrangian cost function and context-based adaptive arithmetic coding. In order to improve efficiency of the enhancement layer coding, an improved motion estimation scheme that uses both information from the base layer and the enhancement layer is also proposed in this paper. The novel designed of wavelet-based coder significantly improves the coding efficiency of the base layer compared with MPEG-4 ASP (Advanced Simple Profile) and H.26L TML9. The PFGS coding is a significant improvement over MPEG-4 FGS at the enhancement layer. Experiments show that single layer coding efficiency gain of the proposed scheme is about 2.0-3.00 and 0.3-1.00 compared with MPEG-4 ASP and H.26L TML9, respectively. The overall coding efficiency gain of the proposed scheme is about 4.0-5.0dB compared with MPEG-4 FGS.

SPIHT-based coding of the shape and texture of arbitrarily shaped visual objects

A new scheme for coding both the shape and texture of arbitrarily shaped visual objects is presented. based on set partitioning on hierarchical trees (SPIHT), the proposed Shape and Texture SPIHT (ST-SPIHT) employs a novel implementation of the shape-adaptive discrete wavelet transform (SA-DWT) using in-place lifting, along with parallel coding of texture coefficients and shape mask pixels to create a single embedded code that allows for fine-grained rate-distortion scalability. The single output code simplifies the logistics of object storage and transmission compared to previously published schemes. An input parameter provides control over the relative progression between shape and texture coding in the embedded code, allowing for adjustment of the emphasis of shape versus texture quality in low bit rate reconstructions. The combination of features provided by ST-SPIHT, namely, explicit and progressive shape coding in parallel with wavelet-based embedded coding of the object texture, is unique compared to previously published schemes. Computational complexity is minimized since the shape coding takes advantage of the decomposition and spatial orientation trees used for texture coding. Objective and subjective simulation results show that the proposed ST-SPIHT scheme has rate-distortion performance comparable or superior to MPEG-4 Visual Texture coding for most bit rates.

In this paper, we present a memory-efficient, contour-based, region-of-interest (ROI) algorithm designed for ultra-low-bit-rate compression of very large images. The proposed technique is integrated into a user-interactive wavelet-based image coding system in which multiple ROIs of any shape and size can be selected and coded efficiently. The coding technique compresses region-of-interest and background (non-ROI) information independently by allocating more bits to the selected targets and fewer bits to the background data. This allows the user to transmit large images at very low bandwidths with lossy/lossless ROI coding, while preserving the background content to a certain level for contextual purposes. Extremely large images (e.g., 65000 X 65000 pixels) with multiple large ROIs can be coded with minimal memory usage by using intelligent ROI tiling techniques. The foreground information at the encoder/decoder is independently extracted for each tile without adding extra ROI side information to the bit stream. The arbitrary ROI contour is down-sampled and differential chain coded (DCC) for efficient transmission. ROI wavelet masks for each tile are generated and processed independently to handle any size image and any shape/size of overlapping ROIs. The resulting system dramatically reduces the data storage and transmission bandwidth requirements for large digital images with multiple ROIs.

Morphological de-ringing filter design for JPEG-2000

JPEG2000 plays an important role in image data compression. However, JPEG-2000 produces noticeable image degradation, so-called "ringing artifacts," in the vicinities of edges in reconstructed images, especially when the images are highly compressed. Ringing artifacts result in artificial contours, thus so degrading the quality of decoded images. To improve the visual quality of decoded images and make them perceptually acceptable, post-processing to accomplish de-ringing is often used. In this paper, an adaptive directional morphological filter (ADMF) to reduce ringing artifacts is presented. Compared with the previously proposed methods, ADMF is rather efficient and effective. Simulation results show that ADMF is capable of significantly reducing ringing artifacts.
