wavelet-based image compression Encoding Techniques - A Complete Performance Analysis

This paper presents a complete analysis of wavelet-based image compression encoding techniques. The techniques involved in this paper are embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW), set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT), wavelet difference reduction (WDR), adaptively scanned wavelet difference reduction (ASWDR), set partitioned embedded block coder (SPECK), compression with reversible embedded wavelet (CREW) and spatial orientation tree wavelet (STW). Experiments are done by varying level of the decomposition, bits per pixel and compression ratio. The evaluation is done by taking parameters like peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), mean square error (MSE), image quality index (IQI) and structural similarity index (SSIM), average difference (AD), normalized cross-correlation (NK), structural content (SC), maximum difference (MD), Laplacian mean squared error (LMSE) and normalized absolute error (NAE).

images obtained with wavelet-based compression techniques such as set-partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) yield very good results. However, a lot of memory space is required as the wavelet coefficients for the whole image need to be stored for the process of set-partitioning coding. In this letter, we propose new virtual SPIHT tree structures for very low memory strip-based image compression. The advantage of the proposed work is that it reduces the memory requirements for practical software and hardware implementations significantly without sacrificing performance.

Lossy compression techniques provide far greater compression ratios than lossless and are, therefore, usually preferred in image processing applications. However, as more and more applications of digital image processing have to combine image compression and highly automated image analysis, it becomes of critical importance to study the interrelations existing between image compression and feature extraction. In this contribution we present a clear and systematic comparison of contemporary general purpose lossy image compression techniques with respect to fundamental features, namely lines and edges detected in images. To this end, a representative set of benchmark edge detection and line extraction operators is applied to original and compressed images. The effects are studied in detail, delivering clear guidelines which combination of compression technique and edge detection algorithm is best used for specific applications.

Earth observation satellites usually scan the ground at a fixed period to capture remote sensing images. It's no doubt that there exists a strong correlation between images obtained at a small interval. This paper is devoted to the compression of spaceborne multispectral images and investigating the coding gain obtained by exploiting temporal correlation. To exploit temporal correlation, a temporal compensation (TC) scheme based on rate-distortion optimization (RDO) is proposed to remove redundancies between two adjacent-period multispectral images along temporal direction and a wavelet-based coding method is used to encode residue images. Experimental results indicate that the TC-based method produces significant improvement compared to those coding schemes of only exploiting spectral and spatial correlation.

The paper describes a methodology to improve the scalability support of an embedded bit stream, generated with a wavelet-based compression algorithm, and a generic protocol to handle multiple regions-of-interest (ROIs). The generic scheme, illustrated for embedded zero-tree wavelet (EZW) coding, exploits the inherent graceful degradation capabilities of wavelet-based compression methods and ensures an optimal trade-off between the image reconstruction quality and the compression ratio. Additionally, an efficient protocol is proposed to handle multiple ROIs in an interactive client-server set-up for telemedicine applications. The processing of the ROIs takes place in the wavelet domain. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

wavelet packets represent an elegant generalization of the wavelet transform, capable of providing arbitrary frequency resolution to meet a signal's spectral behaviors. Recent research advances have shown that wavelet-based image compression techniques offer several advantages over traditional techniques in terms of progressive transmission capability and compression efficiency. The embedded compression techniques - tree-structured coding techniques, such as embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) and set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT), and quadtree-structured coding techniques, such as wavelet quadtree (WQT), multigrid embedded (MGE) and EZW based on intraband partitioning (EZW-IP), - demonstrate the competitive performance of wavelet based compression schemes. This paper describes the wavelet packet algorithm which makes it suited to subsequent quadtree-based embedded image coders, such as EZW-IP. In our technique, the hierarchical sums of maximum magnitude of each quadtree node role as the decomposition criterion. The simulation results for various images show that the proposed algorithm gives a better coding efficiency than the octave-band decomposition.

Due to the huge volumes of radiographic images to be managed in hospitals, efficient compression techniques yielding no perceptual loss in the reconstructed images are becoming a requirement in the storage and management of such datasets. A wavelet-based multi-scale vector quantization scheme that generates a global codebook for efficient storage and transmission of medical images is presented in this paper. The results obtained show that even at low bit rates one is able to obtain reconstructed images with perceptual quality higher than that of the state-of-the-art scalar quantization method, the set partitioning in hierarchical trees [1].

An analysis of spatial context conditioning and run-length coding in embedded progressive, wavelet-based image coding is presented. The analysis shows that run-length coding of certain context subsequences is superior to pure entropy coding, both in terms of coding performance and of execution speed. based on these considerations, a novel, intuitive context conditioning scheme using a spatial distance model to describe the statistics of significant coefficients is proposed. The results for the proposed coding scheme are competitive to the best coding schemes found in the literature.
