In the opening keynote presentation of the 2010 Google I/O Annual Conference, Google Vice President of Engineering Vic Gundotra emphasized that "the web is the most important platform of our generation". It was also stated that all major new software products were webbased and that no major desktop application has been released since 2004[1]. The growth of the web is matched by similar growth in mobile computing. Many Computer Science undergraduate programs have not kept pace with the changing trends and do not require either a web course or a mobile course. Though they offer electives in many emerging fields, many students can graduate without knowledge of web programming and/or mobile computing. Knowledge of both of these fields is critical for future success. This paper describes two adjustments to the core Computer Science curriculum at Elon University. These changes require all students to take a Computer Science III course on web Programming using the Google App Engine cloud and a Mobile computing course based on Android. The Google App Engine provides students a 24x7 platform that can host JavaServer Faces 2.0 applications with a persistent storage tier behind a JPA interface. Android provides a rapidly changing platform for teaching new concepts on location awareness, battery conservation and emerging user interface paradigms for video, audio, acceleration, cloud communication and touch input. Both of these courses have been extremely successful. The Google Cloud, Android and JSF combined with materials used in the two courses and described by the authors can be used at any university to jump start required courses in web and mobile programming. These courses provide students the needed skill sets to be marketable and competitive in the most important platform of our generation.

In this paper an approach to provide web-based framework for distributed execution of collaborative applications is presented. The work is part of a wider on-going project whose aim is to make computing resources, both hardware and software, available to web users. The core of the system is the webcomputing skeleton constructed from prefabricated web-enabled components with the ability to open and maintain Internet connections and provide collaboration over the World Wide web. A number of examples illustrate how web presentation can be enriched with collaborative software using the webcomputing framework. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
The goal of this short work is to present an online tool for modeling an epidemic in a given population. It is based on the typical SIR model, where the population is made up of three groups of individuals: susceptibl...

Computation of one-sided simultaneous confidence bands is detailed for a simple linear regression under interval restrictions on the predictor variable, using a method due to Uusipaikka (1983, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc., 78, 638-644). The case of a single interval restriction is emphasized. A WWW-based applet for computing the bands is described.

Automotive HPC benchmarking needs have not been adequately met by existing benchmarks in the open literature. In this paper we outline what steps should be taken to improve the performance assessment process. HPC performance improvement is essential to meet auto industry needs to reduce lead time between concept design and production. Furthermore, we identify some of the trends which will influence future performance and identify some of the technological limitations. Topics discussed include: creating an auto industry HPC benchmark suite;tradeoffs between modest vs. massive parallelism, use of virtual reality technology;web-based computing including computational grids and utilization of Java for future automotive large-scale computing applications. An extensive list of references is provided including many Internet sites. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The first implementation of fitting X-ray Bragg diffraction profiles from strained multilayer crystals at a remote web-based X-ray software server is presented. The algorithms and the software solutions involved in the process are described. The suggested technology can be applied to a wide range of scientific research and has the potential to promote remote collaborations across scientific communities. ClusPro is the first fully automated, web-based program for docking protein structures. Users may upload the coordinate files of two protein structures through ClusPro's web interface, or enter the PDB codes of the respective structures. The server performs rigid body docking, energy screening, and clustering to produce models. The program output is a short list of putative complexes ranked according to their clustering properties. ClusPro has been participating in CAPRI since January 2003, submitting predictions within 24 h after a target becomes available. In Rounds 6–11, ClusPro generated acceptable submissions for Targets 22, 25, and 27. In general, acceptable models were obtained for the relatively easy targets without substantial conformational changes upon binding. We also describe the new version of ClusPro that incorporates our recently developed docking program PIPER. PIPER is based on the fast Fourier transform correlation approach, but the method is extended to use pairwise interaction potentials, thereby increasing the number of near-native docked structures. In recent years, with the improvement of network technologies and hardware supports, we can find that network have become an important part in our daily life. In traditional, scholars can get new knowledge and exchange their ideas with others by joining a conference. But, however this will cause time and cost consuming. It is feasible to use electronic conferencing technologies to organize future international conferences Consequently, we develop a virtual conference environment system to help the people who want to hold a conference or want to join a conference. This paper focuses on the Virtual Conference Management System We will develop a complete suite of integrated tools to support your planning, design, and implementation efforts during the deployment of new network conference scheduling of an existing network infrastructure.

We propose a Hierarchical Brokering Architecture (HiBA) and feedback control framework for Mobile Device-Centric Cloud (MDC2) computing. Exploiting RESTful web-based interconnection, we probe availability and network latency as instant feedbacks needed by control and management in the hierarchical MDC2 federations. Future real-time seamless service and service-oriented federation are then achievable though distributed control and management algorithms. Performance model and experimental HiBA comprising heterogeneous devices and communication media both show that an MDC2 features better quality in terms of availability and network latency if it federates devices with enough resources distributed in lower tier hierarchy. Therefore, the proposed HiBA realizes a development platform for MDC2 computing which is a feasible solution to User-Centric Networks (UCNs).
