Designing Home Security and Monitoring System based on Field Programmable Gate Array

In the conventional design of home security systems, only the property is typically monitored, without taking into consideration the physical control aspects of the house itself. Besides, the term security is not strictly well defined in view of the fact that there is usually a time delay between the alarm system going on and actual arrival of the security personnel. This paper presents the development of a home security and monitoring system that is suitable where the traditional security systems that are mostly concerned about curbing burglary, gathering evidence against trespassing and so on fail. The design and implementation details of this new home control and security system which is based on field programmable gate array has been discussed in the subject paper. The user here can interact directly with the system through a web-based interface over the Internet, while home appliances like air conditioners, lights, door locks, and gates are controlled remotely through a user-friendly web page. An additional feature that enhances the security aspect of the system is its capability to monitor entry points such as doors and windows so that in the event of any breach, an alerting email message could be sent to the home owner instantly.

Analyzing systems can be a complex task especially when there is feedback across several variables in the model. Formal mathematical notation makes it difficult to understand the influences of feedback and cause/effect. Forrester created the System Dynamics methodology as a means to assist in this understanding by employing a hydraulic analogy. In this methodology, variables become simulated objects such as water valves or tanks. A variety of implementations allow users to construct and simulate these models. The problem is that for many implementations, the intuitive nature of water flow, intended by the methodology, is not as clear as it could be. For instance, the rate of flow or level in a tank may not be visualized. For novices, we suggest that this issue, as well the ability to understand relationships and linking across multiple representations can be problematic. We designed and describe a web-based interface that solves these problems.

In this paper, a remote control platform for the smart homes using mobile phones has been designed and implemented by based on the latest web technologies. The functions of monitoring and management for smart homes are integrated in this mobile-based platform. In order to achieve the flexible control of mobile terminals, an friendly interface has been designed, which is able to fit with different sizes of smart phones. Smart phones can communicate with the web servers through internet and connect to smart home control systems. The results indicate that users are able to access the electrical appliances, check the environment and security status at home anytime and anywhere. The mobile-based remote control platform for the smart home system can give users great flexibilities convenience, with the requirement of demand-side energy management.

We have developed a geographical location estimation system for WiFi user in campus to help network administration. We use WiFi radio wave to estimate users' location. The system measures strength of radio wave between WiFi access point and a user's PC. We have developed and implemented calculation formulas. The system calculates distance between the pair for the estimation. Then the system shows the estimated user's geographical location on the campus map via web browser. A network administrator may know users' geographical location easily to use this system.

Development of a web-based disease forecasting system for strawberries

Florida produces about 16 million flats of strawberries every year, 15% of berries produced in the U.S. and virtually all the berries grown in the winter. Fungicides are applied on a weekly schedule to control Anthracnose and Botrytis fruit rot from December through March. Different predictive models for these diseases were evaluated and systems developed to time fungicide applications that reduced the number of sprays by about 50%. The models utilized leaf wetness and temperature during the wet period to predict disease outbreaks. The most effective models were embedded in a web-based tool developed for use by growers to schedule their fungicide applications. This internet-based forecasting system to predict these diseases, the Strawberry Advisory System (SAS), was implemented on the AgroClimate website using weather data from the Florida Agricultural Weather Network. Growers can select the location closest to their plantings and SAS will provide a prediction of disease incidence and recommendations for fungicide applications. Users can also be provided warnings of the need to spray via email or text messages. In preliminary trials, SAS has been successful in eliminating many unnecessary fungicide applications and has proven user friendly. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

web-based technology has already been adopted as a tool to support teaching and learning in higher education. One criterion affecting the usability of such a technology is the design of web-based interface (WBI) within web-based learning programs. How different users access the WBIs has been investigated by several studies, which mainly analyze the collected data using statistical methods. In this paper, we propose to analyze users' learning behavior using Data Mining (DM) techniques. Findings in our study show that learners with different cognitive styles seem to have various learning preferences, and DM is an efficient tool to analyze the behavior of different cognitive style groups.

In this work we present a new interface for image retrieval system that highlights the potential of a real-time, web-based application. This system, the Perceptually-Relevant Image Search Machine (PRISM), combines the capabilities of content-based, content-free, and semantic annotation-based image retrieval. Each of the aforementioned image retrieval methods has its own strengths, weaknesses, and impracticalities. It is our hope that the PRISM interface, by enabling the simultaneous expression of all three methods, will lead to more robust image retrieval systems.

This paper presents the design and development of a web-based interface for the visualization of high dimensional data such as microarray data. A co-ordinate based method, namely, 3D Star Coordinate (3SC) projection technique is used for the visualization. The proposed web-based interface enables the user to choose an existing dataset from the database or upload a dataset and visualize the best possible projection of the data on an applet running on the client web browser. The proposed projection algorithm runs in Matlab at the server side for faster computation and using Java Serviets the results are delivered to the client machine.
