Taxonomic identification of Amazonian tree crowns from aerial photography

Question: To what extent can aerial photography be used for taxonomic identification of Amazonian tree crowns? Objective: To investigate whether a combination of dichotomous keys and a web-based interface is a suitable approach to identify tree crowns. Location: The fieldwork was conducted at Tiputini Biodiversity Station located in the Amazon, eastern Ecuador. Methods: High-resolution imagery was taken from an airplane flying at a low altitude (600 m) above the ground. Imagery of the observable upper layer of the tree crowns was used for the analysis. Dichotomous identification keys for different types of crowns were produced and tested. The identification keys were designed to be web-based interactive, using Google Earth as the main online platform. The taxa analysed were Iriartea, Astrocaryum, Inga, Parkia, Cecropia, Pourouma, Guarea, Otoba, Lauraceae and Pouteria. Results: This paper demonstrates that a combination of photo-imagery, dichotomous keys and a web-based interface can be useful for the taxonomic identification of Amazonian trees based on their crown characteristics. The keys tested with an overall identification accuracy of over 50% for five of the ten taxa with three of them showing accuracy greater than 70% (Iriartea, Astrocaryum and Cecropia). Conclusions: The application of dichotomous keys and a web-based interface provides a new methodological approach for taxonomic identification of various Amazonian tree crowns. Overall, the study showed that crowns with a medium-rough texture are less reliably identified than crowns with smoother or well-defined surfaces.

Ontology-based Computer-Aided Decision System: a new architecture and application concerning the musculoskeletal system of the lower limbs

A Computer-Aided Decision System (CADS) based on the diagnostic-based ontology is developed in order to provide and broadcast of the knowledge of the medical experts (medicine, surgeon, physiotherapist, etc) for the diagnosis and treatment of children deformities specifically the lower limbs. We proposed a new infrastructure of the CADS which consists of four components: a diagnostic-based ontology of the musculoskeletal system of the lower limbs, a biomechanics meta-database, a statistical classification based on data mining techniques, and an interactive module as web-based module for managing the interaction between experts, patients and the CADS. As applications, the Rotational Abnormalities (RA) and the clubfoot deformity of the musculoskeletal system of the lower limbs were studied. The quality of the diagnosis and treatment will be improved through an evidence-based diagnostic, a conservative treatment, and a follow up process. The use of the diagnostic-based ontology in the diagnosis process is a new approach which could be of help to improve the diagnosis and subsequently the treatment. Moreover, CADS could be extended to other children deformities.

Extended query refinement for medical image retrieval

The impact of image pattern recognition on accessing large databases of medical images has recently been explored, and content-based image retrieval (CBIR) in medical applications (IRMA) is researched. At the present, however, the impact of image retrieval on diagnosis is limited, and practical applications are scarce. One reason is the lack of suitable mechanisms for query refinement, in particular, the ability to (1) restore previous session states, (2) combine individual queries by Boolean operators, and (3) provide continuous-valued query refinement. This paper presents a powerful user interface for CBIR that provides all three mechanisms for extended query refinement. The various mechanisms of man-machine interaction during a retrieval session are grouped into four classes: (1) output modules, (2) parameter modules, (3) transaction modules, and (4) process modules, all of which are controlled by a detailed query logging. The query logging is linked to a relational database. Nested loops for interaction provide a maximum of flexibility within a minimum of complexity, as the entire data flow is still controlled within a single web page. Our approach is implemented to support various modalities, orientations, and body regions using global features that model gray scale, texture, structure, and global shape characteristics. The resulting extended query refinement has a significant impact for medical CBIR applications.

This paper describes the implementation of a wireless sensor network for the temperature monitoring of shellfish catches over the internet. Temperature loggers in shellfish boxes transmit data through radio frequency to a base station. The information is transferred to a server vi a the GSM network, where it is processed and uploaded to a database. The web-based interface allows configuration of the network and access to real-time and archived temperature data through any internet-capable device. The system is designed to be completely autonomous, eliminating the need for repeated manual checks. Practical issues arising from implementation of the system are identified and performance of the system during field trials is assessed in comparison with commercially available temperature loggers.

Vibalizer:: A free, web-based tool for rapid, quantitative comparison and analysis of calculated vibrational modes

This report describes the development and applications of a software package called Vibalizer, the first and only method that provides free, fast, interactive, and quantitative comparison and analysis of calculated vibrational modes. Using simple forms and menus in a web-based interface, Vibalizer permits the comparison of vibrational modes from different, but similar molecules and also performs rapid calculation and comparison of isotopically substituted molecules' normal modes. Comparing and matching complex vibrational modes can be completed in seconds with Vibalizer, whereas matching vibrational modes manually can take hours and gives only qualitative comparisons subject to human error and differing individual judgments. In addition to these core features, Vibalizer also provides several other useful features, including the ability to automatically determine first-approximation mode descriptions, to help users analyze the results of vibrational frequency calculations. Because the software can be dimensioned to handle almost arbitrarily large systems, Vibalizer may be of particular use when analyzing the vibrational modes of complex systems such as proteins and extended materials systems. Additionally, the ease of use of the Vibalizer interface and the straightforward interpretation of results may find favor with educators who incorporate molecular modeling into their classrooms. On a novel low-cost web-based power sensor via the Internet

The paper presents the design of a novel distributed measurement system for power monitoring via the Internet, called IP Power Sensor. The IP Power Sensor, a typical application of smart network sensors, offers portable design architecture for Internet-based remote monitoring. based on IEEE 1451 standard, the IP Power Sensor is composed of smart transducer interface module (STIM) and network capable application processor (NCAP). STIM performs the tasks of measuring electric-parameters and saving information from the sensor,while NCAP enables the sensor to enter the Internet and work as a web server. Meanwhile, the web-based human-machine interface and the tool software have been developed to allow users to configure the IP Power Sensor's adjustable parameters, to upgrade its web pages, and to monitor and archive the real-time measured electric-parameters. Furthermore, a prototype is built for the performance tests in the real industrial fields. Experimental results show that the designed IP Power sensor is feasible for power monitoring. Affordable mobile devices with video playback functionality are rapidly growing in the market. Current wireless and third generation communication networks enable smoother and higher quality streaming video. With the support of these technologies, most participants in telecom value-added service chain are planning to shift their business focus to a more profitable and appealing area, mobile TV. Previous work that survey on users' behavior while consuming mobile TV has indicated that users normally watch brief and casual contents, and not the full program. However, most of the current services adopt a "push" approach since users passively receive pre-defined contents, rather than pulling the interesting topics and segments. In order to promote a more enjoyable and rewarding watching experience, this paper will propose a framework to support a fully interactive mobile TV. The main goal is to enable users to: 1) visually locate interesting topics across multiple genres (such as news, sports and entertainment);and 2) fully control the playback flow of the multimedia items while selecting the most interesting segments. A web-based system has been developed to implement and test the effectiveness of the proposed framework i n a wireless and mobile setting.

Recent advances in telecommunication and positioning systems, web and wireless architectures offer new perspectives and challenges to the management and visualization of mobile and geo-referenced objects. Amongst many research challenges still opened, the development of integrated sensor-based architectures necessary to the integration of mobile data has been often neglected. Real-time integration of sensor-based data, their management within a distributed system, and diffusion to different levels of services and interfaces to what should be considered as a collaborative web GIS constitutes the objective of the research presented in this paper. This paper introduces a modular and experimental web GIS framework applied to maritime navigation, and where mobile objects behave in a maritime environment. Different levels of services are developed, including a web-based wireless access and interface to a traffic monitoring application.

Astrocomp is a project developed by the INAF-Astrophysical Observatory of Catania, University of Roma La Sapienza and Enea in collaboration with Oneiros s.r.l. The project has the goal of building a web-based user-friendly interface which allows the international community to run some parallel codes on a set of high-performance computing (HPC) resources, with no need for specific knowledge about Unix and Operating Systems commands. Astrocomp provides CPU times, on parallel systems, available to the authorized user. The portal makes codes for astronomy available: FLY code, a cosmological code for studying three-dimensional collisionless self-gravitating systems with periodic boundary conditions [Becciani, Antonuccio, Comput. Phys. Comm. 136 (2001) 54]. ATD treecode, a parallel tree-code for the simulation of the dynamics of self-gravitating systems [Miocchi, Capazzo Dolcetta, A&A 382 (2002) 758].
